Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

per year for heating your home?

Just wondered why people wait to turn on the heat if they are truly cold, if it really costs that much.

Our home is one level, about 1,000 sq. ft that gets heated by oil heat, on budget, pay monthly every month of the year.

We pay $1,992/year.

Gas, $1200 for the year. Gas heat, dryer, water and stove. Gas is CHEAP! 3 level house, and heat has already been on this fall. Usually keep it around 68-70 in the Winter since as I get older, I can't take the chill!

Re: Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

My bill in the winter is $200-330/month. So heat will wait till it's necessary. I'll tell my fam to wear warm clothes and put socks on, my DH tells DS the landlord is cheap.Chat Icon

I have electric heat, everything in my house is electric. It sucks!

I have electric heat. It's costly. It's not going on until I'm nearly frozen.

When I had gas heat, it was like $150-175 a month. Miss those days.

Under $1000 now. We switched to gas last winter and the most I ever paid was 150/ month but average way less and summer is under 40/ month

DH complains about the bill in the winter yet he walks around in a t-shirt and shorts....I'm like put some damn clothes on! Since we moved into our house he is more likely to be the one to turn up the heat then I am.

Re: Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

We pay $220 a month, balanced billing, so $2640 a year. But I refuse to freeze or be hot, so the air and heat go on when we want it.

We have gas. Budget plan is always under 150 in the winter. Even cheaper in the summer.

It all depends on how much oil costs.

Last year a fill up was about $1100. Times 3?

This year I am at a cap of $2.90? so much less than $1100.

If I'm cold I turn the heat on and give no thought to cost.

Re: Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

I just ask because I don't get why people complain and this is not just something in everyone's budget, like food.
Heat to me is a necessity.
Maybe that is why we aren't able to do more "want' things because we put away the money every week for heat so we don't have to wait or bundle up.

We have gas (heat, cooking, dryer). Our bill for the coldest month is around $300. Cheapest bill is around 30-40 I think.

I think we did this exact thread with the same question and reasoning a year or two ago. I don't recall it turning out well.

Can we all stop judging how and why people spend their money? Pocketbooks aren't meant to be transparent.

Also - heating costs are insane if you have oil. Even if properly budgeted. Electric is crazy high and PSEG is looking to raise rates yet again

No one gets a gold star or medal for doing everything right financially. If you are in a good place, awesome. If you do absolutely nothing fun just to save for utilities, that must suck but if you're cool with it, that's fine. If you get resentful, then move and have fun with more disposable income. Not directed at OP but just in general.

Overall LI is crazy expensive.

Here's a helpful response without judgement: For anyone struggling , please look into REAP and HEAP and see if you qualify. Depending in several factors, you could get help for heat and electric. I would venture to say many qualify but few would think to apply.

Re: Spinoff of turning on heat-how much do you pay?

Our rate is 2.6 per gallon for oil. It's very expensive.

A few years ago, I sat down and added up our oil bill. It was over $3,000 for the season. That was sticker shock for me. We had the house insulated and turned down the heat from 72-68. Now the heat is higher because my kids get sick when their rooms are too cold, but I despise paying the oil bill. It's 6-700 whenever the truck shows up. Can I pay it? Yes, but it's a big check to write Chat Icon

I have friends that keep the heat at 65 and their oil bills are not bad at all. I can't have it that cold, wish I could deal Chat Icon

My electric is also very high. cooking and the dryer are electric. I wish we had gas

I know this is not just to me since I started the poll but I am really just commenting as the other poll showed that many people make decent money and when these questions are asked about necessities, many have complaints about how much they cost.
LI IS expensive, I will totally agree with that. Try living on much less than $100,000 total household salary.

For us, it's not about not being to afford the oil. It just kills me to pay it! I can't get gas here yet (long story) so we are stuck with oil for a while. We don't have little kids so we CAN wait as long as possible.

It's just the point for us. Not that we can't $$ it

I think a lot of people feel the same
