Reagan - Mondale election day. I was in first grade and it was my b-day so I had off and I remember my mom got my a pepperidge farm chocolate cake and we sat and watched the news. My family was NOT happy with the results and I remember that.

I think it must have been the Challenger. I was in 2nd grade it was such a rough year. A girl in our class and her family all died in a fire, the challenger.. which we were watching live on TV, and then our beloved teacher went out on maternity leave. It was all too much for 2nd graders to handle. We went to catholic school so it was the year we received communion and pennance. I think I have the most memories from any year in grammar school of that year!

I don't remember a 'first'. It's all a mishmosh of memories.

I remember:

-Being the first family in my neighborhood to get cable in 1975
-The Hostages in Iran
-When Begin and Sadat Shook Hands in peace
-Gas shortage of the 70s

Same here. Also the Bicentennial. A major deal.

Wow I can say I was around before cable TV. My nephew thinks being around before MTV is huge.

I remember the Challenger, but I was in kindergarten so I don't think they had us watch it. I think I remember hearing the news later.

Challenger. I was in 4th or 5th grade. We had just finished Chorus and the principal came on the PA and asked us to have a moment of silence.

Prince Charles & Lady Diana's wedding procession, I was 5. We were living in England and my uncle was working in London and his office had a party in a conference room that overlooked the route. I can still remember looking down on her carriage and seeing all that dress. Not so much her, but the dress.

The challenger explosion. There were 2 elementary schools on the base we were stationed at and Christa McCaulife had a tie to the other one, so it was a big deal and we were watching it live on tvs. I remember everyone being so scared, especially the kids who had dads that flew. I was in 3rd or 4th grade.

When I was really little my mom used to watch the Watergate proceedings on TV. I dind't know what it was and she told me it was a soap opera!Chat Icon

I remember when Elvis died - because my older sisters were HYSTERICAL.

I remember hiding behind my father's armchair during the Son of Sam murders.

I remember the blackout of 77. I was in the city and my aunt made me eat all the ice pops in the freezer before they melted. We lit candles and my uncle sat in a chair in front of the building with a bunch of neighbors talking. There were sparklers too!

But the first thing I really remember as a historical happening was the attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. I was old enough to 'get it' - and it frightened me to think that someone could should our president.
