Definitely not Petro. I hate hate hate them. Switched from them about 18 months ago to Swezey's and I've never been happier. Petro was basically raping us with their hidden costs.

I am curious what hidden costs do you see with Petro?

I had Petro until converting to gas. The price was always as promised, and the one time I needed service, the repairman was at my house within half an hour. I'd recommend them if you were looking to go with a contract.

Petro service is OK; it took them 3 visits to fix one leak. But you pay thru the nose for oil (either on contract or off contract.) We compared against CODFuel.com and I think we paid 40-50 cents more per gallon with Petro.

We're not renewing with Petro, we'll do CODFuel for the lowest price and pay out of pocket for tune-ups and repairs.

We were a customer with them for over 20 years, paid up the ass for a premium service contract, and whenever there was some sort of issue, it was NEVER covered. I also called them and asked them to give me more of a reasonable oil price (gave them quotes from other companies) and the customer service woman flat out called me a liar. I'm pretty sure that's not how you treat a customer of 20+ years. When I had them give me a breakdown of all my charges I found out they were charging me a yearly fee "just in case" I ever need a new oil tank. Uhm what?? I am so glad I got rid of them. Chat Icon

Re: Slomins or Petro?

I hate Slomins. They were a total rip off. My burner broke in the middle of winter last year. It was so cold, we had no heat or hot water. Slomins wouldn't give me a service time but they told me within 4 hours. 24 hours later they showed up, at 10pm. I told them over and over again that I had 2 little kids too.

The second issue I had with them was running out of oil. I'm bad with it so that's why I switched from cod. We were on auto-delivery, so you would expect them to IDK.... deliver. Well they don't unless they call you first. I wasn't home for any of the calls I guess, and I ran out of oil. They wanted $250 to turn the boiler back on. I told them forget it, cancel my contract, they offered to split it with me. Again I said no and they finally did it for free.

The final issue with them was the burner cleaning. The appointment was made 6 months in advance, they have a long wait for that. The time slot was from 8am-2pm. We were home all day waiting. At 11:30 we had to pick my DD up from school. I asked my DH to call them and see when they were coming so that we could take the ride together. They said the guy won't be there until after 12 at least. So we go pick her up, and we get home by 11:45. We see a note on the door from Slomins so we call. They were there at 11:35, it's now 11:50 maybe, the man won't come back. Fine, whatever, give me another appointment. The manager told me that I have to wait another 6 months and buy another contract.

I finally just canceled and went back to cod. This is very long, I'm sorry. My point is, if you actually want heat and hot water don't call Slomins. Chat Icon

The fee for the oil tank is part of the premium service. Solomon's has the same thing called boiler insurance or whatever they call it now. You elected this charge by taking the upgraded service plan.

I have the basic plan and I have never had an issue with them covering parts on my boiler. And I had a ton of parts replaced mainly because I had a crappy hot water heater tank and I had them troubleshoot by basically replacing every possible part on the boiler (since the tank wasn't covered). Never had an issue with stuff not being covered.

I will say that if your issue is due to plumbing, they won't cover that.

Thanks, all! I signed with Petro for $3.379 fixed and a free service contract. Will see if they are good for us.

Must be the 'new customer' rate. When I call and ask for fixed, I get a quote of ~4.25 and 150 for the service contract.

Oh, I'm sure it is! At that rate, I'd just do COD and pay for their $240 contract... much much cheaper in the end! Or, switch companies each year.

If you get a service contract with them, you have to use them for oil; it is written into the contract. We made that mistake last year.

I was just about to write an "I hate Slomins" post about their terrible customer service. I will save it and just beg you not to use them. I am so disgusted by them. They almost lit my house on fire. Then they broke my alarm and they keep not showing up to appointments to fix it. Insane.
