At what point does the Covid-q9 change from a Pandemic become an Endemic?

——
Are schools really having quiet lunches? I teach HS and they are sitting 4 to a booth and talking like normal. The schools people are describing on here are nothing like what I am seeing first hand or how my son describes school (or what I see when I get him from after care hosted at the school). Also, I am in NYS; just not LI. My entire family on LI though describes school as I have experienced it.

No, they aren’t. I just made it up because I like to be dramatic and right.Chat Icon

All kidding aside. In NJ and in private schools, they certainly are.

That's crazy, what on earth is the justification for a "quiet lunch"?? Thankfully that's not the case at my kids school, lunch is pretty normal other than they are assigned to a specific table to eat. Even that's kind of dumb because then they can go outside at recess and play with everyone anyway. lol

Our lunches are far from normal. My son in middle school has to sit at a desk 6 feet apart from anyone in the school gym. My daughters classes are split into three groups. They only get to eat in the cafeteria every third week. The other weeks they are in the classroom spaced out. Honestly that bothers me more than the masks.

I don't think lunches are normal for MOST kids in school still today. But you will always get the ones that will claim everything is normal for their kids.

I think what you need to understand is not everyone on this board is from LI and depending where you live the response of of schools to the pandemic will vary greatly.

When people, not just myself, say things are pretty normal for their kids it's because they are, nobody is lying. What's to be gained by that?

I live in a small, more rural town which has had next to no cases throughout the pandemic. School has never had to shut down due to infection rates and my county has consistently had one of the lowest rates of COVID in all of NJ since this all started. It's a far cry from the situation across NYC and much of LI.

So yea, aside from masks, things are pretty normal here for my kids. Things are pretty normal for others kids as well. It all depends on economics and location. It would be in your best interest to stop insisting that everyone is always lying, it shows a lack of understanding and makes you look foolish.

My problem is that I don’t question when people say their schools are back to normal but don’t question me like I’m making this sh!t up. And not saying you did specifically but in general people love to do that on here.

I know some schools are functionally as normal as they can be but in NY and Nj there are many schools that are not. Nell has given many examples of her school district on LI. The majority of it, is not ok for kids.

I also feel like your example is the minority because of where you live, which is great but not the norm.

I'm definitely not questioning what you said at all, I don't doubt for a minute that some kids and schools have it worse. I'm sorry that your kids are having a harder time. I agree with you that things need to change, it's been two years and as a parent and former teacher myself, I won't argue that all of this craziness is detrimental to our kids. Hopefully it gets better soon.

They say once the virus becomes more predictable it will be an endemic. They are anticipating later this year.

There is already a new variant of omicron, that doesn’t always show positives on Covid tests. They are calling it stealth omicron.

Yup because people are getting smarter and starting to fight this so lets add on another variant. There will ALWAYS be variants to viruses. We have to live with it like we have with other ones.

OMG! Not the STEALTH Omnicron. RUN!! HIDE! Get back in the bunker!
A new variant that doesn't show up on tests, and probably has no symptoms either.
So at any time, ANY time you can have it and not know! Your doctor wouldn't even know because it just does not show up on tests. It could be anything. It's a chameleon. Itchy asshole? NO! STEALTH OMNICRON.
Ingrown toenail- could be the STEALTH.
We CANNOT unmask our children because Omnicron has gone stealth now.

Who makes this nonsense up?

People who can't let go of the control they have and people who follow all this shit and abide by it are the reason people have control Chat Icon

My son has to to eat as his desk, with a plexiglass covering they put up for lunch. They used to be able to whisper quietly to their neighbor who is 3-6 feet from them (can’t remember if it was shortened), but with the Omicron hysteria, since they got back from break the kids get yelled at if they talk now. My son never complained but after two years I think he’s mentally done because he’s been very vocal about how he hates lunch.

I'm sorry, that's really a terrible way for these poor kids to have to function. I hope it gets better soon for him. Chat Icon

Thank you. Honestly, I’m just trying to get him through this year because I don’t think things will change. Basically trying to be as positive as possible and counting down the months till he is out so he can enjoy his summer.

I completely understand. Chat Icon

We all lie for dramatic effect. Like when my daughter was locked outside in sub freezing temps in the name of safety.
Or the teacher in my district who made kids who showed up maskless yesterday (when our district told us that masks were optional) sit in a corner in the back of the room away from the chosen masked ones in front of an open window where they froze all day and weren't allowed to put a coat on or put their hoods up and when they had to speak made them stand in a red box she had taped off on the floor before they were allowed to open their mouth.
Yet this must but only my district because everyone else seems to be living their best school lives and loving school and nothing has changed and kids aren't affected and kids LOVE wearing masks...It's like utopia!

OMG, if I was a parent in that class, you would see my ASS down at that school this morning. Wonder if I know whom that teacher is or my kids do.
Yeah it must just be YOU. Don't you just want to live the unicorn life others live on this board? Not only are THEIR lives perfect, so are their kids now. Chat Icon Chat Icon

It was a 5th grade teacher in an elementary school that wasn't mine so I don't know. The parent who posted about it said if he doesn't get proper action from the district he'll post the teacher's name.
I didn't think segregation was allowed in schools, but here we are.
It's amazing what fear will do to people's brains.
I'm sure this asshole had 3 vaccines coursing through her and was wearing the duck billed platypus mask on, but she's still scared of an unmasked 5th grader.
Perhaps she should find a new career or get herself some help.

Ahh ok, I am sure the Mom's page has it on it but I won't go near that and have been off for years lol. That is just crazy.

I hope it’s gets better soon but I’m not optimistic. I was more hopeful two years ago then I am now. I really don’t see an ending in sight.

That's where this was posted.
The other page would have probably deleted it and censored it.

I read about this! This is beyond outrageous!!! Wtf is wrong with people?!? Do they even have a brain?!? It’s almost like all capabilities to rationally think just disappeared from one day to another! The fear and submission by following every single rule in this horrible state is truly sickening! I just wanna slap these people to wake them up!

What is truly scary is how easy it is to control and brainwash people with fear. You look back on history and wonder how certain dictators got to power, how certain atrocities happened and then you see this and you are like- oh ok. THAT is how.
And it's not even that hard to do.

Don't know any of the teachers in that grade but she should be outed, IMO so others don't make this HORRIBLE mistake again.

It seems so much easier now to fear people. If it is not covid it is the shortage of things (or shortage that WILL be once people go run for these things) or the weather. People fall into fear so much easier now it seems and people with anxiety seems to be so much higher now. It is sad.

It's interesting to me how close this poll is so far. I thought the results would be way more skewed towards removing the masks.

Because people love telling others what they should do.

Yep it makes them feel good.
People who have never had any power suddenly feel powerful. The age of the Karens!
And apparently they feel super safe and protected with a piece of cloth over their face

This really isn’t born out by the data especially when you look at trends.

Most people support things like abortion rights, gay marriage, etc.

Most people are happy to let others live their lives as long as what they are doing doesn’t affect others. Masks don’t fall under that category because we’re in a public health crisis and they do help stop the spread.

I’m not surprised by the numbers on this board. We’re here, just mostly choosing not to engage because of the nastiness. Most people understand that this is the dead of winter and we are still coming out of a spike and it’s too soon for this. If the numbers go down I’d certainly be open to it. But now is not the time.

Simple poll about masks on children at school.

As you already know I am not in favor of masks during school. I think it is increasing anxiety in some students, decreasing social skills and a huge disadvantage to the special needs community. I do not think overall masks are doing anything and it is a combination of things that helped to decrease the spread of Covid in schools. I believe that social distancing and the practice of hand washing contributed more than masks. I would be more than happy for the moment to have some sort of hybrid mask wearing in school. The kids should not need them sitting socially distanced in their classroom learning. They have them off for snacks and lunch as it is. If they are going to common areas that are more confined, like the hallways or say art or music then I would have no issue putting them on for the short term.

Simple poll about masks on children at school.

I think that people have lost the ability to properly assess risk.
With vaccines available to the majority of the population, including school aged children, its time to end masking in schools.

Masks are causing a host of learning delays in children, especially those with special needs. Its not necessary at this point. Cloth masks especially are useless, its just theater.

I hate hearing the "kids are resilient" mantra over and over. I don't want my kids to have to be resilient anymore. 2 years in, people have the tools to protect themselves and I can make the choices that work for my family.

Yep 100%. We have suddenly developed a zero tolerance to risk. It's amazing people still drive cars or step out of bed in the morning!

And as far as kids being resilient, you know else kids are resilient to....Covid .

We are still far from normal but, it's better than last year. School hasn't closed yet and we are still 5x a week in person.

Lunch isn't as bad as what Sash's son has. My elementary schooler eats on the floor in the gym. He has a little square to sit on and a lap desk. Yesterday he ate lunch near (well, 6ft from) his friend in another class so they talked and shared candy (slid across the floor).

My 6th grader eats lunch at desks in rows that are distanced so you can only talk to the people next to you - who are the same people every day due to assigned seating.

I don't particularly care strongly either way. At this point I think it's a little dumb to continue with them since the kids are unmasked for lunch, recess and gym and play together outside of school without masks. That being said, they don't really bother my kids so whatever.

Agree.

Well said. I completely agree with the first two paragraphs. I don't have kids, and my students are older, so I can't really speak to the third paragraph much from personal experience, but I agree with the sentiment.

Re: Simple poll about masks on children at school.

Are the schools delusional to think we are living like this at home?
Not seeing anyone, eating in silence because speaking is bad, staying 6 feet apart from people, not travelling, not seeing friends, not eating in restaurants, not gathering with family?
I think about all the stuff we do on the weekends and I think about my DD having constant sleepovers with her friends where 3 of them share a full sized bed and sleep next to each other! And we don't even covid test before or after! OMG!
OMG Hochul would shit her pants!!!
What would the Superintendent think?

And then this weekend we had birthday cake that someone blew on and we all ate it like crazy psychopaths and I ran around in a dirty gauze mask that I can blow a candle out when wearing and kept pulling it off my face once inside the store and I ate in 3 restaurants and was standing at a bar with no mask on! And I got really crazy and walked from the bar to the bathroom with no mask on because I love to live on the edge like that! Chat Icon

Then I send her back to school on Monday in a mask and she's sitting 6 feet apart and kids are eating lunch on the floor like animals and we play this little game of safety. Don't speak while eating. Until Saturday. Then all bets are off.

Yeah ok.

Funny how they have NO problem driving like maniacs too though, which you have a higher risk of dying from. It's like everyone schedules way too many things in their days and they are insane on the roads.
