Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR

are you a New Yorker when you are BORN and BRED here?

what do you think?

i say the latter. anyone can "live" anywhere, but to "be" something, it needs to be in your blood.

I was born and bred here, I love NY, so that's what makes me a newyorker. Chat Icon

But I feel that anyone can consider themselves "whatevertown"er if they have a passion and love for that new place to call home that they made for themselves.

I also identify with being "ITalian" I wasnt born there, but spent lots of time there growing up from infancy to adulthood, it became part of my culture, part of my life, and who I am, so I dont just say im Italian because family members were born there.. (no offense to anyone)

and then being in Italy, we were "The Americans" Chat Icon which I always was and always will be VERY proud of. Chat Icon

I totally think it's attitude. There are people who are born and bred here but hate NY (which I don't get why they don't just LEAVE Chat Icon ), so they shouldn’t be considered NYers. Then there are people who move here who because they WANT to be here and really LIVE it as a NYer and LOVE it here. So it could be either.

i think its something deep within you ... in your soul

i don't think you have to be born here ... i think you can "develop" it if you live here for a very extended period of time

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR

I was born and bred here, went to college in NJ, moved back home after.

But I think of myself more as a Long Islander than a New Yorker.

When I think of someone who is a New Yorker, I think of someone who lives in Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx or Manhatten.

When I travel domestically and people ask where I'm from, I say Long Island.

ETA: I don't know if this answered the question you were really asking though.

I think bred more than anything else. If you grew up there (not necessarily born), it makes you one. iw. DH was in Spain until 5 and then NY until 9 and then AZ until 18 - he always tells people he's from AZ.

I think that you CAN eventually become one, but it has to be quite a few years and it's not everyone. My Dad has been in NY for 50+ years and I don't think of him as a NYer really (I guess it's the lack of love too), but our friend has been here from Russia for 10 years and she is totally a NYer - like Carrie Bradshaw too - total NYer.

i'd have to agree.

i was born here, raised in socal. but i always KNEW i was a new yorker! i came back for college. then went back and forth for a bit. my son was born here.

now, i live in NJ... my heart and my blood both say i'm a new yorker.

quick story:
both my parents came to ny as children from their native countries. both sides lived here until the early 70s.

whenever people would talk about "the good old days" and refer to ny... especially nyc, they would mention a place and then state the streen/corner it was on.

i always found it so funny that everyone had been out of the city for about 15-20 years and they still remembered the EXACT location of almost everything in ny!

once it's in your blood!

Re: Q- are you a New Yorker just b/c you LIVE here NOW OR

I think being a New Yorker is a very specific thing, it has to be part of who you are, I think that happens by living in the NYC area in your formative years.

I was born and raised in Upstate NY and I am not a New Yorker, I actually specify that I am from Upstate NY when people ask; to me Upstate and downstate or two very different worlds.

New York is a very interesting place, it is very regionalized; from being on this website I find that most people from LI see anything north of the Bronx as Upstate, I live in Saratoga County and around here downstate begins around Poughkeepsie, we have a camp in the Adirondacks and people who live there consider anything south of Warrensburg(Lake George) to be downstate.

I love being from NY and I think we have one of the greatest states in the country because we have everything (major city, coastal living, gorgeous mountains) NY has everything, and it's regions are very diverse and unique.

I think it's when you have made your home here at one point. I don't think it's because you were born here.

By home, I mean thrived, lived, laughed and cried...

I think it's the attitude. I always considered myself a New Yorker as a kid, even though I was born in Colorado and we lived all over the country b/c of my dad's job.

But both of my parents were born & bred in Brooklyn, my whole family was living here then, it was really the place I identified as home no matter where my family was stationed at the time.

I guess that's weird, right?

OHHHHHHH see, I disagree with this.

The last year we lived in NY, I hated it with a passion. Not because it was NY...but because it was my HOME and I couldn't AFFORD a home there. I love everything else about NY, but couldn't see struggling and worrying where the next meal was coming from.

Even though I live in NC now, I will ALWAYS be a New Yorker, and I am VERY proud to say that I am! Chat Icon

I think there is a difference between saying your a New Yorker b/c you feel it in your blood

and saying you're a New Yorker b/c you and 6 of your friends from Providence rented a flat in Soho, and it's SOOOO COOOOLLL to be able to say that you live in NY..

anyone follow me?

I mean...really...some people that call themselves New Yorkers would have been eaten alive by the New York that was just a few years ago.

Born and Bred---i spent 5 yrs. away from NY and i just had to come back. even though the cost of living here is RIDICLIOUS compared to where i was living in the carolinas....i still love it and wouldn't trade it for anything!!

for me--its because i was born and bred here and have such an appreciation for NYS in general--from the beaches on long island, to the sky scrapers in manhattan, to the hudson valley and the adirondracks upstate....its all great!

I am a New Yorker born and bred, I always will be. You can take the girl out of New York, but you can't take the New York out of the girl!

Even if she sounds slightly British to the untrained ear, and her son calls her Mummeh.

i think usually you have to have been raised here to really be a new yorker, but if you move here as an adult and really embrace the new york way of life then you can be considered a new yorker

Totally agree. We were uptown (NC) last weekend for dinner and the waiter said, "where are you from" I said LI Ny, he then tells me "Oh Im from there too" I said "oh yeah, where" "Oh I moved there for a year from Virginia and then moved here"
I looked at him like Chat Icon and said "Oh you are from VIRGINIA then"

That year doesn't count in my book. You came, saw and booked to NC.
