I'm confused by this. Can one of you clarify?

You are saying that what sends the message that school isn't important is that there are so many scheduleds days off from school but you don't think taking them out of school for vacation on the few days they are in school doesn't send that message?Chat Icon

No, I wasn't saying that-- I kind of just went off-topic and was sympathizing with working moms on how much time off they need to take to accommodate all the days off from school.

As I said in my earlier post, I don't have a strong opinion on taking the kids out for a vacation. You have to consider the kid, the grade, the teacher, the time of year (like is a big test coming, etc)... so many factors. I personally would be fine with pulling my kid out for a couple days if the timing was good, but probably no more than 2. I don't expect my kid's teacher to be applauding my decision, however, or bending over backwards to accommodate me. That's what I think is sparking some of the controversy on this thread-- people can't seem to believe that teachers might actually look down on this decision.

And just for the record, as far as kindergarten goes, it is not even state mandated that kids attend full day. I have friends whose kids only go half day.

Actually, K is not mandated at all in NYS

I strongly disagree that taking your kid out of school for a couple of days sends a message that school is not important.

You know what sends a message that school isn't important? The fact that they have so much time off! I get holidays, but it seems like between pseudo holidays, and conferences, and "breaks" (winter break, spring break, summer break), they average going to school about 15 days per month!

I don't know what district you are in, but my children are in school more than 15 days a month.

Summer break is (counting weekends) 64 days long. MORE than enough days there for vacations.

Sorry I can't quote you on my iPhone , I went off topic too. Ds just started nursery school and I am very surprised with how many days he has off this year. I am a sahm now and am wondering for myself how I will work this out if I do work FT in the future. There must be a way bc everyone does it, I just wonder how!

As for pulling the kids from school I can imagine Disney would be torture for all of us in the middle of summer Or during school breaks and the price difference is insane. Also a longer trip like Hawaii or China for dh to take 2 -3 weeks during summer would be impossible so we would have to tack on days around the kids school schedule.

Just checked our district calendar. September has 16 days,
October has 20
November has 17,
December has 17,
January has 20
February has 16,
March has 22
April has 15
May has 20
June has 16

and several of those are half days.

Summer vacation is actually 76 days long, counting weekends. June 23-Sept 7th

Not debating whether or not it's enough time or not, just stating the number of days DC go to school each month.

ETA: Over the course of the entire year, DC average 13.5 days of school per month (counting summer months in the average)

Just keep in mind too that as the boys get older, state assessments are given in March, April, May and June. These are tests that districts are given a small window of time to administer and if your child misses them because of vacation I am not sure of the consequences. I can only tell you what happens if they do not pass.

Re: Pulling kids out of school for vacation

I don't think it sends the message that school is not important if you take them off a few days. We are actually doing it for thanksgiving week and DS is a 1st grader.

I think they get that message if they are constantly late, if you don't submit homework on time, if you don't return the books on time, if you take them to school the days they are off (I saw parents on Tuesday getting to school with their kids) and not getting involved at all if you can.

I agree with this. My son always has his homework done, forms filled out, library books back on time, we review together what he did in school each day, and he is always on time. My sister who is an elementary school teacher tells me that she has several students who are just the opposite and whose parents are not involved or interested in their schooling at all. So if those kids attend more days than mine, who is better off?

As for my comment about time off, I said they "average" 15 days per month, I was just throwing it out there and I was counting summer break in the equation. Sorry I didn't do the actual calculation, I was just expressing how it felt like every other week there was some kind of half day or full day off.

The bottom line, to me, is that what other parents do really shouldn't affect my child one way or the other. To each his own. I think school is VERY important - heck, with college and grad school, I went through 20 years of it! And I will make sure my kids understand that too - regardless of whether they miss a couple of days.

I personally have no issue with taking my child out of school if he/she is doing well......

Family vacations are super important to me and if for whatever reason we cannot schedule ours around the school calendar, we will be traveling during and I will try my hardest to have my child keep up on the assignments.

For us, we wouldn't, but probably, mostly, because I work in a school and I can't take off non school vacation time.

I would have DH take DC to see his mom for a long vacation.

As a teacher, there are some circumstances that I think it's OK. I had a student (HS) who was a great student and her aunt/uncle wanted to take her to Europe, on a non school break. I think that experience was better than being in school for a week. If it was on the beach, my opinion might be different.

I agree, my son started "School" at 2.5....15 years he will be in school....If I need to someday plana afew days off into a vacation, I will and I make no apologies for it and I dont think it is wrong. It is Life, our life..there is no wrong...my son and daughters school careers wont collapse over 3-4 missed days.

this arguement is always so silly in my mind.

Do whats right for your family and that is that.
