Been there done that...Kerri has thrown up from crying and she quickly ended that when she realized it wouldn't get her anywhere

Can I ask - what is CIO? I looked at the lingo page and it's not there. Just curious!

No flames here! If a child is over 6 months, sometimes CIO is the only thing that works! We had to do it when our son was 10 months, to finally break him of the habit we created where he HAD to fall asleep on Daddy. It was such a nice bonding thing for them for the first several months, but when it was nearly 10 pm and he was literally sitting up on his father watching American Idol with us, we knew we had to get this kid falling asleep in the crib. Yes it was horrible and wrenching for us, but 2 or 3 nights of horror was soooooooooo worth it in the end.

Don't feel bad. You are doing what you feel is best for him in the long run. I commend your strength and resolve. You wouldn't feed him candy for dinner and knowing a good night's sleep is just as important you are helping him get it the best way you can.

I hope it gets fixed very soon. Based on what I've read it shouldn't take long, as long as you and DH are consistent.

I think you did the perfect thing- giving you son the ability to fall asleep on his own.

It must have been so hard on you and DH! Chat Icon

I don't want to flame you I want to hug you because I know how tough it is!

We did CIO with DD when she was around 1 year (she was a great sleeper before that) and it broke my heart to hear her cry. Parenting isn't always easy and sometimes you need to make tough choices. Sleep is so key to these little guys, it was necessary for us.

Glad it worked-Chat Icon

it depends on the age of the child--my twins I had to because they were getting upevery three hours at 12 months.
So...CIO at 12 months is ok by me.
If I hear him manipulating me then I ignore it--if its reflux you can hear the gurgling and I pick him up.

Re: Our experience, feel free to flame away, but I wanted to put this out there for other sleep challenged moms.

way to go!!! you did the right thing. we just did CIO with my 5 month old and it worked wonders.

the baby doesn't have to be 6 months old. my ped recommended it to us even before 5 months but we weren't ready for it. there's not magic number--it's what you and your ped are comfortable with.

why would anyone flame you??? it's obvious you know and love your child and want the best! way to go!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Glad it's working for you, hopefully he'll be an expert sleeper in no time Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

DD is 17 months, and STILL prefers to sleep on us too. Last week she was sleeping horribly and would do the whole bit in the middle of the night (and naps) too, where she'd fall asleep on us, then as soon as we transferred her to the crib, she'd wake. She's ALWAYS been like that Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks for posting this. I have tried this and never stuck with it because my son sobs soooo uncontrolably. I am just completely at a loss, desperate to get him to sleep through the night and he is 11 months old!! -same type of thing gets up and will only fall asleep with me or DH holding him.....we are going to try this again and stick with it...we so desperately need sleep. I am glad it worked for you!

Well, you saw my other post... the kid passed out. Probably because he only took 1 nap today.

See, the problem we have is I still give him a bottle before bed. I know, have to work on that next. If we can get a week under our belt of Lucas sleeping well again, then I will start to come up with the plan to drop the bedtime bottle. Fun, fun, fun!!!

Then maybe we can start addressing naps too! Chat Icon

honestly, i wouldn't get too hung up on the bottle thing.

I NEVER in a million years thought we would ever get rid of the bottles seamlessly. he loved them. Cried for them. It was our routine. Our time together. I told myself I would revisit at 18 months. But made it a goal to be rid of them by 2. Well guess what? A month ago Matthew stopped wanting the bottle. At 15 months. Just like that. No effort required.

Right now I think it is more important for you to get the sleeping down. For him. For you. For Chris.

Don't beat yourself up over the bottle thing. It's fine!

As I said in the other thread..great job!
