Why not? Everyone else make comparrisons about the two. I don't think she is a frump, I think she is realistic. I would much rather her wear a $60 J crew dress then a $3000 designer dress. Then you would be b!tching she was wearing a $3000 dress, and wondering who was paying for that.

I think that's exactly the point - if the best dressed First Lady can wear shorts on vacation, why can't our current First Lady wear shorts on vacation?
not only that, but why the reverence for one first lady and not the other.
I didn't like the last President's policies too much, but I would NEVER malign Laura Bush. ever.
I wouldn't malign GWB as a person or what he did on his (numerous) vacations either.
the disrespect is off putting. I don't like seeing it on either side of the aisle.

The difference for me is that the Kennedys are actually on the beach and yet they still look more put together then Michelle Obama as she walks off a private jet.
My opinion of her outfit has nothing to do with political parties or presidential policies.

seriously, "outfit" and "put together" do not belong anywhere NEAR "desert hike in 106 degree heat"
it's one thing if you don't like her style...it's another thing to malign her for doing something MOST people would do themselves...dress comfortably and appropriately for the task at hand.

Reminds me of the episode of the West Wing where Bartlett was getting hounded by everyone about whether it was ok to take off his suit jacket during a long lecture on a stage under lights. And what it would "mean" if he did.
I have no problem with what they wear in their 'off' time. Nancy Reagan was stuffy and uptight beyond belief, my perception of her might be wrong but based on the way she was dressed, that's what it felt like. I like that our President and First Lady are still recognizable as people.

ITA. I am pretty liberal generally, but I still say she is too casual in this photo. I don't think it's anything to get all riled up about, though.
For the record, I lived in Arizona for a year, through this time of year in temperatures that are hotter than what they get at the Grand Canyon.

As a resident of the Inferno, aka South Florida, you dress so you don't get heatstroke. This has nothing to do with politics! I totally agree that you dress for the "task" at hand!
Now if she had camel toe or headlights on, maybe we can talk. She looks neat and put together. Who cares!

Yes she is on vacation BUT she still represents the USA 24/7. Enough with the shorts and sneakers....the First Lady should be dressed appropriately at all times. She could have worn lightweight long pants.
Next the President is going to be adopting the business casual look for meetings with other heads of state.

They have to fly in a secured manner. The first family has to be protected. I think there is nothing wrong with this. She's not meeting with the heads of state..she's on vacation with her family. She's human not a robot. I've been to the canyon in the summer...no way would any more clothing be appropriate.
I'm sure they aren't paying the gov back for use of the plane so that puts them on clock.
She just looks sloppy, I think plenty of women manage to look better in shorts in the summer.
I'm thinking you're not a fan of her or the President which is fine. As others have stated, the have to fly AF1. Should they fly commercial? I wouldn't want to be on that plane.
Those are the appropriate shorts for the Grand Canyon. Ever been?

Look, Michelle is a pretty smart woman. She knows when it is appropriate to wear shorts (for example, on vacation!) and when to wear a classy dress (for example, when in a political meeting). For example -- If she were going swimming, of course we would expect her to wear a bathing suit -- why? because that is activity appropriate. If we saw a picture of Michelle in a bathing suit next to the beach, no one would suggest that how dare she wear a suit, etc. I have seen the pres in a suit in a pic -- we all know he was going swimming, and isn't exactly walking into an important meeting wearing his swim trunks. Basically, this is what it boils down to -- she is on vacation, she is probably hot, doing touristy stuff, and wants to wear shorts, while she takes pictures of sights and runs after her two kids. If this were the story of any other mom no one would care about it in the slightest. I am sure if her husband were also in a pic on that vacation, he wasn't exactly walking around in a black suit and dress shoes, and I am sure the girls weren't wearing frilly jcrew dresses.

this is out of effing control ridiculous.
first of all, THANK GOD she is NOT a true "representative" of the US, or else she should be wearing a big asss baggy Budweiser tshirt with capris and be about 40 lbs overweight.
second of all, the PRESIDENT MUST FLY AIR FORCE ONE AT ALL TIMES (or Marine ONE) any flying machine he goes on BECOMES AFone if for whatever reason the real deal is not available.
I HOPE this is the new image of the US...a STRONG working woman who takes care of HERSELF and HER family and cares MORE about DOING than the PRETENSES.
absolutely LUDICROUS. some of the crap being said makes me want to vomit. sad sad sad people.
ETA: when I go on beach vacations, I change into my bikini and put sunscreen on in the airplane bathroom b/c I like to arrive at my destination prepared.
should she have gotten off the plane in a skirt suit and changed in the Porta Potty at the rim? would that have made everyone happy????????????????

I do think the First Lady is a bit laid back in her outfits - as compared to previous first ladies in office.
I don't think it should be making the headlines - there are more important stories, events unfolding that need more of your attention.
Do i like the way she dresses? Not really........but who cares.
