Swaddle, swaddle, swaddle! Also be sure you are burping him good and do not change his diaper at night unless he is soaked through or had a BM. I also recommend the book or DVD Happiest Baby on the Block. You didn't specify if you are BFing or FFing? There may be some things going on there as well.

Re: Newborn moms...desperate, need advice...

thanks everyone! i am FF only.

lori, i don't have the papasan swing, but i do have a soothing motions glider, which is what he prefers to sleep in over the bassinet...i wonder if the papasan swing is worth getting to try out. i have a regular swing, but i dont think he likes sitting that upright in it.

i bought the happiest baby on the block book yesterday! while up at 4AM i started reading it with one hand, but havent gotten far. hopefully there will be some good tips.

thanks for all the hugs and suggestions...sometimes at 2-4AM it feels like you are the only one out there going through this, so it's so nice to know i am not alone (not that i would wish this on anyone lol!)! Chat Icon

Beth - I have the papasan from when Lily was a baby - you can borrow it if you want! You're close enough that I can drop it off, or you can come pick it up if you want to get out of the house.
Just let me know!

Definitely swaddle!
They ALL fight it at first, but really love it.

After you swaddle, make "shushhhh" noises very loudly right next to his ear.

Re: Newborn moms...desperate, need advice...

On a positive note....
when Lily was that little, I remember having to try and soothe her, so I'd be walking around, rocking her, and I'd have the tv on. It was right around the time Boh Jovi came out with that "Make a Memory" song, so it was always on the tv....and I'd sing along to soothe her.
Now, hearing that song reminds me of those special moments...and it makes me cry....Chat Icon

sorry Beth try to swaddle alittle tighter Jeff has it down pat. Get a sleep sheep to put in the crib or the seahorse we have for Riley she loves falling alseep with that noise on. sorry I'm not really gonna be much help thank god Riley sleep 4-7 hours a night. It will get better. Are you breastfeeding? Are you waking him up at night to feed again or is he waking up on his own? Have you tired using a pacifer?

4-7 hours!? wow!!!!!!!!! i'm formula feeding, not waking him up at night to feed. my issue with the pacifier is that he LOVES it, but every time he spits it out he wails to have it put back in! repeat that every 5 mins for like 4 hours!

I know crazy but thank god she does give us time to sleep. Try to swaddle tighter put his hands down and then swaddle him up. What times does he usually go down? Riley usually goes down around 10-11pm and then will sleep until 4-6am Put music on for him. Hope it get better. Have greg and yourself take naps when the baby is napping. Since you are FFing, make sure he has a good latch on the nipple, feed in an upright position, and burp at least 2 times per bottle. Also, don't rule out the possibility that the formula may be a problem. Some babies have colic due to milk allergy and have to switch to a soy formula. Also, is he constipated? My DD experienced some colic when she had trouble going.

Re: Newborn moms...desperate, need advice...

I agree with everyone - swaddle. Also does he wake up for next feeding when u finally get him to sleep or do u wake him up cause its been 3 hrs? The best advice I got was don't wake a sleeping baby. I used to wake up my two girls and now they sleep 5-6 hrs. Also maybe try rubbing the chest when u put him to sleep. Good luck!

Re: Newborn moms...desperate, need advice...

Brayden was doing the same thing....then I realized he HAS to be swaddled..

He fights going in it, and tries breaking out in the beginning BUT after a few min he is out cold...he has been giving me at least 1 4hr stretch since I started swaddling him at 1 week old...
