I grew up in oceanside and there is one in island park, probably less than 10 min walk from the house. Never really thought about it, but it wouldn't be an issue for me...

i grew up a couple of blocks from one in lynbrook. i would not want it to be backyard but a couple of blocks away is fine.

The only reason I answered no is for resale value. The fact that you're questioning it means others would question it if you were selling the house in a few years. KWIM?

Well, I wouldn't pay a ton of money for a house near a power plantChat Icon I'm sure I can't be the only one. That's all I'm trying to point out.

for me it would matter if there are smoke stacks. My Dad lives pretty close to the stacks in Northport & people that live there (not my Dad ) have tried to organize to tell LIPA it makes them sick. I'm not sure if their claims are true.
My stepdaughter lives very close to the LIPA transfer station or whatever it is on whitehall street, I don't like it but I think I'd better more comfortable living walking distance to that vs the stacks.

A 15 minute walk? That could be 10 miles for me! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon That's plenty far away...

It wouldn't bother me. As far as resale goes, no matter what, someone is going to not want your house for one reason or another. I would never buy a house with a pool. I would never buy a split-level ranch. Other people love those. You will always find someone to buy your house when it's time to sell. You're planning on buying, the current owners bought there, all the neighbors bought there. There's plenty of resale market....

Re: need help: house near a LIPA power plant

i say no b/c i am superstitious about illness...

quality of drinking water
smells?
cancer occurence in neighborhood?

i know that getting answers to these questions are near impossible, that is why i would cross it off my list.

(AND, i know that living on long island we are pre-disposed to a higher level of breast cancer, that i wouldn't increase my risk ... )

Re: need help: house near a LIPA power plant

that is a big no no for me and DH. You just never know and it seems things are worse now than when we were kids.
