would you allow a nuclear power plant IYBY?

McCain has been pushing this point and I think it's interesting.

where would all these power plants go?

how would you feel living with one in your backyard.

anyone from Buchanan NY on this site?

Re: would you allow a nuclear power plant IYBY?

it really depends how protected they'd be...
there's a working one right in orlando.. and not being from there, not sure how the locals feel.. but it's been running without incident for a very long time.
we need to go to nuclear power- it's way cleaner.

I think it's interesting as well. On LI we had Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant.
It never went live.
I don't know enough about it to comment either way - I will say that my dad had a job for many years building the Shoreham plant - So for that I am thankful. I don't know if I would like to see it activated though. I just think there has to be better alternatives.

I would have to do a lot of research before making a decision.

I don't immediately get up in arms and afraid when I hear nuclear power plant though. I know there are major pros and cons to both sides.

Re: would you allow a nuclear power plant IYBY?

I was renting in a 5 mile radius from one when we first moved down here.

Once a month, the alarm would go off as a test.

They hold concerts and festivals on the grounds of the plant.

I thought it was absurd, till my brother came for a visit...he was living in France at the time and totally put us at ease.

The French have them all over the place.

Well, DH got transferred, we moved away, but I would still move back to that neighborhood in a heartbeat when its time to purchase.

I fully supported the one that they were building in Shoreham. At the time, I lived about 2 miles away from it. I personally think they are safer than most other power plants, and most factories.

I grew up in Rockland county, right across the hudson from Indian Point. We used to have drills in school, so we'd know what to do in case of the plant exploding or something (what good the drill would do us I have no idea), I forget what the scenario was. Anyway, other than that, never really thought much about it. Then again I was very young then.

Yes, absolutely. They are clean and safe. Just think- France is run by 80% nuclear power! They have to put them somewhere, and if we had one on LI right now (Shoreham) we wouldn't be enjoying our sky-high LIPA bills.

Yes but the way they are designed are the safest in the World. They have 3 level of safety/security in case of failure.

I would still not live near one.

I am not against them. Just not in a populated area.

I do not think they should be in heavily populated areas but no I would not mind living with one near me - as long as Homer Simpson wasn't working at it Chat Icon

Honestly, I live in Howard Beach and having the airport so close is probably WORSE for my health than a PROPERLY built and maintained nuclear power plant.

Re: would you allow a nuclear power plant IYBY?

absolutely not.

I find this whole nuclear power idea ridiculous. why on earth on an ISLAND would we have a nuclear power plant instead of a windmill farm????! Why would you ANYWHERE have a nuclear power plant now that wind energy is so easily harnessed?

oh, I know, windmill farms are not aesthetically pleasing Chat Icon but huge nuclear power plants ARE?

The other excuse is that wind energy is not perfect becuase the mills require maintenance... but nuclear powerplants don't? How about those wonderful waste caravans where the spent fuel rods have to roll through hundreds of miles of neighborhoods before being burried somewhere in arizona or nevada?

The third excuse is that it's too new.....
great, so lets just use some flint to get a spark and start a fire then. Windfarms are all over the world, and they WORK. We don't ALWAYS have to lag behind the times and stick with the known evils. we can be a bit more modern if we chose.

The offshore drilling and nuclear plant ideas are both so outdated and overrated. they both have insurmountable issues, and will take WAY too long to get up and running, despite what the pundits say.

It's just that McCain I believe would do virtually anything to avoid a renewable energy source. sorry for the rant, but the whole situation makes me grumpy.

How many miles of windmills would equal a power plant though? Is it really a comparable option? ( I have no idea, I am actually asking ?)

good question... never thought of it myself. well, I just googled and found out that the average nuclear plant makes 900 megawatts per year.... I don't know how large of a property they all sit on, but I saw one was on 1600 acres. (Here is the website where I got this info )

From this website I read that:

Most manufacturers of utility-scale turbines offer machines in the 700-kW to 2.5-MW range. Ten 700-kW units would make a 7-MW wind plant, while 10 2.5-MW machines would make a 25-MW facility. In the future, machines of larger size will be available, although they will probably be installed offshore, where larger transportation and construction equipment can be used. Units up to 5 MW in capacity are now under development.

(MW = megawatt) 1 MW will give power to between 225-300 homes over a year.

so, depending upon the wind turbine, the 2 modes are very comperable with the area they take-up. one big ol nuclear power plant on over 1000 acres = 1285 mills that each have 700kW turbines or 360 mills if they are the 2.5MW turbines.

forgive me if my math isn't correct, but I THINK it is....

Thanks for doing the research! I would have to do more of my own but I think that from what you are saying that wind mills sound like a very interesting option

Re: would you allow a nuclear power plant IYBY?

I don't agree with having one on the island. God forbid there was an accident (one with some warning where people could evac.)anyone east of it would be toast. No hope. As for our place upstate if they want to build one there. Go ahead if it will make my life cheaper!

ETA: Upstate on the Tug Hill Plateau they have a windmill farm. When we drive up there I think it's pretty cool. I have read that the windmills make a constant swooshing noise that can be annoying I guess but that is a minor issue IMO

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D05E5DF1F3FF931A1575BC0A9629C8B63
This site says that it would take 300,000 acres of windmills to replace the Indian Point power plant. However, the windmills could be put in the middle of existing farms, and take up relatively little land.

http://groups.google.com/group/trends/msg/f19e43baa8ee56bf
The Westmill wind farm in Oxfordshire, England, will generate 6.5
megawatts of electricity with just five turbines. Adam Twine, who owns
the land for the farm, had no problems finding investors for the
project.

Scotland has approved a 140-turbine wind farm at Whitelee for
completion in 2009. Output will be up to 322 megawatts - enough to
power virtually all homes in Glasgow.

In Massachusetts, USA, the 130-turbine Cape Wind project will generate
over 400 megawatts of electricity - enough for 400,000 homes.

This link has way too much info to read... It compares nuclear to coal, wind, etc. http://world-nuclear.org/info/inf02.html

I think the plant should go live- that's the reason why our electricity is the 4th highest in the nation- b/c we're paying for that plant that isn't used!

Expensive to tear down and if I recall correctly LILCO was forced to sell the plant to the state for ONE DOLLAR, which certailnly didn't help reoup costs.

Utilities pass increased costs (from whatever the reason -- this or a renewable energy requirement) on to their customers. Everyone blamed the electric company for the increased costs after that plant was shut down, but the politicians that made the deal had A LOT to do with it.

I disagree. LILCO fired that baby up for under a month, knowing full well that they would never get approval to run the power plant becuase there was no feasible evacuation plan for LI in case of a meltdown. They were WARNED numerous times by the gov't to NOT fire it up for a test run and contaminate the whole thing. they did it anyway. I think they did it to force the issue so they could use the plant despite not having the required safety concerns addressed...

So they were punished by being forced into bankrupcy by selling the d@mn thing for $1, since there was NO WAY they could afford to dismantle the plant (as required by the fed gov't) on their own. The Gov't bailed them out (and LI) bigtime by buying it for $1.

LILCO were such @holes IMO......
