moral dilemma

so I went to old navy the other day to buy a few things - when I got home I realized they didn't charge me for one of the items ($20 value).

When you are not charged for something do you bring it back - or is it their mistake - your gain?

What if you realize it in the store - on the spot - do you say something then?

If I realize it in the store, I tell them. If I realize it once I am home, I usually let it go and consider it my good karma coming back to me Chat Icon I guess the right thing to do would be to bring it back, but honestly, I am just too lazy to be that morally upstanding.

If its a big chain store (like Old Navy), I wouldn't say anything.

If its a small mom and pop shop- I would.

Re: moral dilemma

Some stores have a policy that if a cashier forgets to ring up something and you bring it to their attention you get something - like the item for free and $5. Don't know if Old Navy does that though.

As for me, unless there was some reward like I mentioned, once I was home, I wouldn't say anything or bring it back. If I was still in the store - depends on the situation. Something similar happened the other day and I did say something.

Re: moral dilemma

If it happens in the store I say something but if it happens at home I wouldn't say a thing. I was at the bank a few weeks back, I was cashing a check and it was for $100 and change. She started counting out $100 bills as though the check I was cashing was for $1,000. Not that I don't need the money, but I couldn't, in good conscienceness (sp?) have taken advantage like that, so I told her she needed to look at the check again. She couldn't stop thanking me. I felt so bad.

Ditto. Particularly the laziness part. I dont even bring back suits to Ann Taylor that don't fit me because I rarely get to the store.

Re: moral dilemma

In the store, I'd bring it to their attention, at home, I'd probably just keep it.

except for money, when they give me back the wrong change I go back and give it to them, regardless of when I realize it.

this just happened to me last night at the butcher. I got home and realized they forgot to charge me for a box of Shake-N-bake ($3). I didn't go back - they charged me $11+ for 4 pork chops, they got their money!! Chat Icon

If it was on the spot, I would say something (and have been in the situation, and did say something). but, if i was already home and it was paid for, I would not go back.

I would have done the same thing!

a $20 item = my lucky day

$900 more in cash = bad karma!!

Re: moral dilemma

Like others have said, in a big chain store I wouldn't say something, in a mom and pop store I would.
This actually happened to me last week in Target. I was talking with the cashier and he put one of the shirts in the bag without ringing it up. I didn't actually realize it until I was in the car but I wasn't going back into the store to say something!
If it was actual cash, like the story above at the bank, I would say something. Even if I got too much change back at a restaurant or a store. Not that there is really anythnig different about an item or cash (technically anyway), but I just feel worse when it is cash. Does that make any sense? Chat Icon
