Minor Update- NPR- but I need to share some bad news & maybe get some hugs
and this is really the only board that I post on. So here it goes...
I got laid off from my job last night. My bosses can no longer afford to employ me. Without getting into the details, I am in complete shock and didn't see it coming. I feel completely numb. 
What also makes this even more difficult for us is that I have been carrying the family health insurance and make the bulk of the money. DH and I have a lot to figure out now.
Update: The company I've worked for is owned by a husband and wife. I was told by the husband last night that I was being let go, but that I would go over the details with the wife the next day. So I talked to the wife this afternoon and---
So after working for them 6-1/2 years, I'm really not getting much. But honestly, I'm also not surprised. In certain ways they have been generous over the years and in other ways they are not  It is pretty obvious that they are only looking out for their own interests at this point, but you know what-- I'm tired, I'm over it, and I'll move on.
So what do I get--I'm working until the 19th-- another 2 wks, and they're going to pay me for the 5 days vacation that they owe me. I wonder if I hadn't asked about the vacation, if she would have done it
The company is too small so they don't fall under cobra. She's going to look in to whether I can continue on the plan and pay for it. (If anyone from HR knows anything about this, please let me know.)

What do you do? Maybe someone here can help you out.
I am a Reader and Clearance Officer for a title company. With everything that is going on in this market there are very little jobs. I have been talking to my contacts to put out feelers. But it's also very possible that I may have to change careers entirely. (It's really that bad in our industry right now.)

They offered me some per diem work. I have to wait until the wife owner comes in to talk about it. (The husband is the one in the company that does the firing, but the wife handles all the other details. Yah, a little unorganized that they didn't give me complete picture when they broke the news to me )

I am so sorry..
I know how hard it is. My DH was laid off (the company he worked for filed bankruptcy; he was in the mortgage industry) and with me being a SAHM, we freaked. He too is looking outside of the mortgage industry for work now..
Did you get any severance? Luckily my DH got a decent severance package and between that, unemployment and him doing some side work, we are managing.. somehow..yet it is still SO hard.

Thia...I've been there...I was laid off right before I got pregnant...once the shock wears off you'll hit the ground running...everything will be okay.

As an FYI, an employer laying off an employee & hiring them back as a subcontractor leaves them open to fines. You can't fire someone & "hire" them back without benefits. That's a DOL violation. You can sue them for benefits.
But, since I'm not on their side, I'm on yours. Only accept the per diem work if it's off the books & they're not going to dispute unemployment.
While your industry has changed, you have a lot of skills that can translate into other jobs.
Change is always scary but you will land on your feet. You have a good head on your shoulders & great skils to offer.
