Lunch breaks

DH and I are often given a litany tasks by our families and they like telling us that we can accomplish said tasks during our “lunch breaks.”

Aside from the odd lunch out with coworkers or running of an errand here or there, I’ve never had a job where I (or anyone else) took a lunch break. I’d run out to grab something to eat, yes, but that food would be eaten while I was working. Now DH and I both work from home so even the occasional lunch with coworkers or errand are no longer. He also finds our families’ lunch break obsession odd. Is it generational? None of our friends reference lunch breaks, either. What am I missing here?

Re: Lunch breaks

I've always taken a lunch break. When I was in the office, I would sit in the cafeteria to eat with other coworkers.
Now that I'm working from home, I use my lunch break to run on the treadmill.
I need a little downtime in the middle of the day.

I get a lunch break, and I can do whatever I want with it. If I want to run errands I can, or I can sit and enjoy lunch with my coworkers. It's MY break.

At all 3 of my jobs I have had (law firm, manufacturing company, school district) I have always had a lunch break. Are you an hourly employee? Mine have always been unpaid lunches. Two of them were 35 hour work week jobs with 1 hour unpaid lunch and the other was 40 hour with 1/2 hour unpaid lunch.

Officially, we all have a lunch break -- it's the law! But, in reality, I think most office workers probably don't take a full hour. I bring my lunch and I'll sit at my desk and goof off on my phone while eating my sandwich. But, not for an hour. And, if the phone rings, of course I answer it.

But, I definitely take little breaks throughout the day. For instance, I'm typing this post at work at 2:55 PM, not during my lunch break. So, I figure all the mini breaks I take during the day add up to an hour lunch.

During Covid, I've been working from home and I do the same thing. I almost never leave the house during the day. I'll take a break here and there to empty the dishwasher or throw a load of laundry in, but I don't take a full hour at once.

Nope, salaried.

Technically we can get a lunch break but most people only take it occasionally. I usually eat at my desk - not a big deal to me - I would rather work through lunch than have to work extra late. (Pre-Covid).

This is how my last on was. I worked there for 20 years- in the beginning most people took there actual hour--often even together, in the cofnerce room, or some people would go to the gym or something.

As time went on, it became more common to work through lunch.

I trie dto protect my lunch break by physically leaving the office. I could easily go to the post office or the back, and sometimes to a store. Something that might take longer, like a manicure , I only did on the rate occasion that not a lot of people were in the office & I had someplace to go that night.

I always found it hard to take care of personal desk errands at work-making dr appointments, calling my apt. management company, etc. When I was at my work desk, I was thinking about work, or other people were walking in or calling me.

My DH is home permanently now, and I see how hard it is for him to do things on his break. Sometimes we will go for a short walk, but people I used to work with would go get groceries or a haircut at lunch when working from hoone. When people don't see that you are physically gone, they assume you are available to them.

What types of things do your family members expect from you?

We have a lunch hour. I usually work through it though because I usually roll into my office around 10. Sometimes I will take a break and run an errand. Some of the other attorneys I work with will go to our building's cafeteria and have lunch there.

All my jobs I have had taken lunch breaks. Mostly went home when I was close to the job. Now I will sit in the cafeteria and watch TV with coworkers or outside when it was nicer out (when we were in the office).
Being at home I love it as I can do things around the house, run errands or just sit outside. Sometimes I will eat before the hour lunch so I can do whatever I want.

Re: Lunch breaks

My experience has varied.

When I worked in an office setting, I took my lunch break unless it was really busy. I sat in the cafeteria with colleagues. I needed the break from the computer.

When I went into education, I generally stopped taking lunch. There's just no time. There is always a student around, or a meeting, or papers to grade, etc.

But at my current school I will sometimes take a quick walk around the block. I did this when we went back in the spring for a quick mask break or just to get some sunshine, and I think I might stick with it next year.

Lunch breaks

One of the first days of my first “real job” I was eating lunch at my desk. A supervisor from another department came over to me and told me to ALWAYS take my lunch break. I was entitled to it, but if my bosses saw me working through lunch daily, I would always be expected to.

It's important to take your lunch break, most of the time your not paid for that 30 min or 60 min hour, why keep giving your company free time. It's also important to step away and NOT eat lunch at your desk. In the end most companies will not give it back in any way including gratitude

Yes, this is what I meant. I’ll take a few minutes here and there but it definitely doesn’t add up to an hour and I work well past 5 most days.

I was curious if people actually took a protected hour out of each day to not work, which it sounds like many do.

Calling doctor’s offices, taking them to doctor’s visits, “looking up” (googling) things, DH’s dad asks him to bring him lunch sometimes, visits with out of town relatives who for reasons not understood are only available during business hours, finding specific items at Michael’s.

Re: Lunch breaks

When I worked in an office, I got 30 min for lunch. If i had my lunch with me, I’d go sit at the park across the street to get some air. There was never time to run errands during lunch. Now that I work at our family retail business, my lunch break consists of “eat when you can and get interrupted constantly”. No errands there either. I will possibly make a drs appt or check email during that time as well.

LOL. So, my mom is retired. She does nothing but shop, take walks, go to dr appts and cook. Yet, she is always saying to me "can you pick this up for me?, can you look this up for me?" Now, that I am working from home permanently it's "can I stop by for lunch and you can help with XYZ?" She always took a lunch break, so to her, she thinks I do too.
I have never taken a steady 1 hour lunch break on any job. I would run out to get something and eat while I worked. Occasionally, I'd run an errand that make take about an hour. Now that I am home- I usually forget to eat lunch, but I do throw in laundry or clean up if I need a break from work.

I get a lunch break but honestly the last few places I have worked I usually just grab something quick and then eat while I work.

Lunch breaks

My DH has a very flexible schedule. He’ll take 60-90 minute lunch break and go to the gym with his coworkers. He works a longer day though because of this. 7-4:30/5:30.

I teach. I like to go on walks during my 40 minute lunch.

I don't utilize my lunch break enough, I usually eat at my desk because I have too much work, but I am entitled to an hour lunch. It's on you of you choose to work through lunch...

Lunch breaks

I really never took lunch breaks. Occasionally I would go out with co-workers but it was always a hassle because I never knew when I'd have down time at work to leave for an extended period.

My husband always takes lunch breaks. Even now that he works at home, he takes an hour during the day.

It actually relates to our eating habits too. I always multitask when eating, he does not.

We're required to take a 1 hour lunch break, unpaid. If we work through lunch or take a short lunch we need to explain why. And if it happens too often they get pissy about it.

My DH *technically* gets an hour lunch break but never actually takes it, he's too busy to waste the time and often has meetings through lunch anyway. He will usually eat while he works or at most, mess around on his phone for 10 minutes while he eats his sandwich.

Yes. I work 40 hours a week. Anything over is OT so if I only take 1/2 hour lunch they owe me 30 minutes OT.
