Ladies with curly hair - questions & opinion needed

So I have an appointment to get JHS next week. My hair is naturally curly, and I have a lot of thick hair so it takes FOREVER to get it straight (about 2 hours at least) and when I leave it curly, it just looks like a big frizzy mess.

I had stopped using hair gel when I left it curly and was using a leave in conditioner instead (my hairdresser said that would be healthier and also, I don't like "crunchy" hair that I would get with using gel... mouse never really worked at all for me). But I decided to try a new product made specifically for curly hair (Mark Anthony Curl Envy) and below is a picture of my hair after I used it.

I'm now having second thoughts about doing the JHS because if my hair looked NICE when curly, I could deal with the long straightening time since I would have an alternative to doing it straight.

So after all that - I guess I want to see if you think my hair looks "nice" in the curly pics below. I need to be able to wear it curly at work, out, etc. and not have it look "bad".

If not, can you suggest another product I can try for when I want it curly? It would need to control frizz without leaving it hard. (The Curl Envy left my hair super touchable, but I'm not sure if it looks good). THANKS!!!

Why not have the Brazilian done? That way you can wear it curly with less frizz and it's a breeze to straighten it. The best of both worlds.

For gel I currently use Kinky Curly Curling Custard.

I LOVE your curly hair!

Seriously!

Here is my opinion being i have BTDT with JHS as well.

Being curly haired...even with gel, mouse, shine...it never looked GREAT!
I hated blowing it out, the frizz so I went the JHS route.

I like it until I wanted to change it up and put some curls in it..for a wedding.
Well I curled with a curling iron and within the hr, FLAT.
It wouldnt take a curl.
Then as time went by, I missed my curls! Big time.

I let it grow out and by that time I had gotten pg.
Also got a haircut to cut off 4/5 inches.

To this day, my hair is not curly anymore like it was before. I dont know if the JHS changed it as well as me being pregnant (hormones). IDK.

That is why I went with Brazilian Keratin threatment recently.
At this point, I barely have curly hair so I just blow it out.
Just easier for me now.
Even this still lets me get some waves and it works. Im actually still frizzy so Im not sure if it really last 6 months.

So with ALL that being said Chat Icon
Keep your gorgeous curly hair! I love it and think whatever you are using is good!

As a curly haired girl I think your hair looks BEAUTIFUL!!!! I think that we are our own worst curly haired critics!

I CAN straighten my hair and I like the way it looks BUT no one ever notices it. But last night I took a shower, combed gel into it and wore it curly to work. To me, the curls aren't perfect - there is a little bit of frizz in the back from sleeping on it BUT people have been coming up to me ALL DAY telling me how great my hair looks!

I LOVE the curls - I wouldn't touch them.

Growing up my hair was VERY curly, I did a straightening treatment and I know its impossible BUT I swear it changed my hair forever :(

Thanks guys!

I originally wanted to do the Brazilian Keratin, but after researching it, it's not for me (mainly due to the formaldehyde etc).

I'm thinking I'll probably cancel my appointment and maybe do it one day after we have kids (when I KNOW I won't have time to straighten my hair Chat Icon).

But I still would like a good product - I think this one I used for the above pics is pretty good, but wondering if there's another product.

GQ - I'll look into that gel. Does it leave your hair "crunchy" or hard at all?

It depends on how much you use. For me I use a good amount because I like the semi crunky feel.

Thanks Tilde. I'm actually the opposite of you - when little, my hair was so straight that my mom would twirl it with her finger when wet just to give me some wave! Then as a teenager, my hair just changed and suddenly I had super curly hair.

I started dying my hair in college and I think that's what messed up my curls - although I *think* they look ok in the above pics because of this new product.

I also personally prefer my hair straight - I just feel "prettier" that way, if you understand what I mean. Funny though, my mom and DH LOVE my hair curly! lol. I just want to make sure that if I don't do the JHS that I can wear it culy and have it look nice, you know?

I LOVE your curls! It looks like there is not a single ounce of frizz!

My curly hair is perhaps not ideal (it can be frizzy and it definitely doesn't have a uniform curl pattern) but I will NEVER get it chemically straightened. So I'm all for your canceling the appointment! Chat Icon

Oh, and the gel I use can get crunchy, but once my hair is dry I add a little smoothing cream, which takes all the crunch away.

(P.S. - your glasses are really cute.)

I am very partial to curly hair and very jealous of those with naturally curly hair.
I wish!
Having said that- I think your curls look great and you should keep them!

Re: Ladies with curly hair - questions & opinion needed

I know what you mean about feeling prettier with straight hair—I definitely feel that way too, but I have finally been succeeding at embracing my natural curl a lot more (I’m way too lazy to straighten except for special occasions). I have to say this week my hair has been doing really well. I have it in longer layers, similar to you. I finally bit the bullet and bought the deva curl shampoo (low-poo) and conditioner (I got it at Harmon and used BBB coupons so it was like $10 each). I do the low-poo every few days only (like every 3rd day) and then condition every day no matter what. Instead of a gel I have just been using a garnier fructis leave in conditioner (there’s probably something better I could use—deva has one—but I had a lot left and I figured I’d use it up)—I don’t towel dry my hair at all, just squeeze it out in the shower, then flip my head and apply the product in 3 sections. I shake it out a little and go. It takes me an hour to get to work so I usually flip my head and shake it out again once I get there, and then once about 20 min later depending, and it has been looking great. I try to touch it at little as possible b/c that adds frizz. I think the method of no towel drying actually makes just as much difference to the frizz level as the product!

I have to say I never thought more expensive shampoos and conditioners would make a difference, but this shampoo is so different and it actually does make a difference!

Just like Tilde, nobody ever compliments my straight hair, but my curls get compliments ALL THE TIME. There are people I work with who yell at me when I don’t wear my hair curly. And I always think it has some frizz too. I would never do a chemical straightening even though I almost always straighten my hair for special occasions b/c I think it makes my face look thinner and I feel prettier.

As for your curls, I think they look great—I think once you wear it that way a few times and see how many compliments you get (I’m sure you will get a ton, especially if you normally wear it straight), you may be able to love the curl a little more. After 26 years I’m finally able to love my curl!

i used to have really curly hair, i think as im getting older im loosing the curl, maybe bc its shorter now too.. idk. anyway, i love your long curls!!! im glad youre canceling the appointment. i definitely think you can manage the curl!!

when my hair WAS curly i found curl cremes to be the best. i bought a product called 'noodle head' (in an orange tube) from sallys beauty supply, it worked great!!! i would try any type of creme to get that soft touchable look youre going for!

I just went thru this. My hair dresser told me to leave in some of the conditoner when I wash it. I also tried a lot of different things. I found Infusium23 shampoo, condioner and leave in treatment have woked great on my hair. HTH

I always leave a bit of conditioner in... but now that you mention it, I used to use Infusium23 treatment years ago - I actually thought they discontinued it! Hmmm, maybe I'll try that.

Oh and SnicknNick - the leave in conditioner that I have been using for a while IS the fructis sleek and shine leave in- unfortunately, it doesn't really help define my curls or get rid of the frizz Chat Icon

Your curly hair is so nice. I wouldn't do JHS if my hair looked like that curly.

I think I know just the product for you. Moroccan Oil . I use the intense curl creme but I want to try some of the other products. They sell it at the salon I go to if you need more info.

I have curly hair. The best products I have found and my hair looks completely different when I use them are from Curlisto. They sell them at their salon in the city but you can also buy them from their website. I'm not kidding I have tried EVERYTHING. Also, follow the instructionals on their website as to how to apply their products and you will notice a MAJOR difference in your hair. I have thick curly hair and I use the Control II gel mixed with the structura lotion(as on their website and the stylist there told me to do this as well) - if i am going out and need hold I use the structura spray. For touch ups the next day or later that day the curl reform spray. Def. try it - you will not regret it.

ETA: i t hink your hair looks good in these pics but, i think with these products and using them correctly you will notice a MAJOR difference.

BTW, if i ever wore just conditioner in my hair i would look AWFUL - that does NOT work with most curly hair!

Well, I do love the Morrocan Oil that I recommended but I am such a product wh0re that I have to try things that look good! I have an appointment coming up in the same area as that salon. If I go in just to buy (no styling appt.), will they help me pick a new product or 2 to try? You never know in Manhattan so I figured I'd ask!!!!

So I went on to the Curlisto site you posted and it looks VERY interesting! I love their styling demonstration videos and the hair looks like it comes out amazing! I think I will try their products when I have a little extra cash..

In the meantime, I actually followed their styling instructions with the new product I had bought and used in my pics above (the Mark Anthony Curl Envy cream) and you know what, my hair came out much better! So THANK YOU for posting!!!

Don't loose your curls....while I know as a curly haired person, there are days when I'm like ughhhhhh can't I just have straight hair but I've learned to love my curls. You have gorgeous curls, I wouldn't do anything to dramatic with them.

I currently use mousse in my hair and then use Catwalk Curls Rock amplifier by Tigi...they have a great line of curl products.

Deva curl wasn't bad either, not my favorite but not bad either.

Curls Rock

I loved a product that ABBA use to put out and a few months ago stopped selling it..OF COURSE it's was a gel lotion so not so stiff on the hair.

I kind of go the crunchy root with my hair though but any of the products above work well just use less then me.

Re: Ladies with curly hair - questions & opinion needed

I am a curly, frizzy headed girl, and I have to say the Fructis product the pp mentioned really works, but I still hate my curls and wear my hair straight every day.

I have done so much damage trying to change my hair that I'm basically at a stand still on what to do next. Today, because of the weather, I'm puffy and in a bad mood because of it. I wish I could wear my hear curly, but I haven't found the "magic potion" for me yet.

Embrace those girls, girl. I think they look great!! They key, also is a great cut for the curly haired girl.

If you don't have a salon you love I would also suggest this. Honestly, I have tried SO many different places and this was the only one where the cut actually made a difference in the way my curls looked every day. So much so that I started getting many more compliments after getting my hair cut here! It's a trek to the city but, its on the east side so its not so bad if you are coming from LI.
