Logistically, a video monitor just isn't working in our future DD's room. I don't have a tall dresser in the room to put it on top of that could look down into the crib. We could wall mount the camera unit by the crib but 1) I don't have any outlets convenient to the crib so would likely call in an electrician to add an outlet and 2) I don't love the idea of a cord running down the wall of the nursery for both aesthetic and safety purposes. DH proposed an audio only monitor and I initially thought he was crazy and I dismissed it as a stupid idea. What are your thoughts on an audio only monitor vs. a video monitor?!?!?

I love having a video monitor. Audio only isn't necessary bc trust me, you will hear them. I like seeing what dd is doing, if she's sleeping, bouncing around her crib etc. we put up a corner shelf so we could have the monitor view the crib.

I like the peace of mind of having a video monitor. Unless the baby is crying, you can't hear breathing or anything like that. At least I can't on mine. Sometimes I'll just lay in bed and watch her.

We have a shelf in DD's room where the monitor is but the wire does run down the wall to be plugged in. It's not the greatest but she doesn't play in her room so I'm not overly concerned with safety.

I have a video monitor and never use it. I just used it occasionally when she was smaller. I think it's nice to have, but not necessary.

Re: In your opinion, is a video baby monitor necessary?

For us, it's necessary. I need to see what he's doing in his crib. Sometimes he stands up & cries but I don't want to go in there yet so I have to be able to see whether he lies back down to go to sleep or if he's still standing. For us, audio wouldn't be enough.

I don't have a tall dresser either... I use stacked diaper boxes as a makeshift stand for the camera... whatever works.

I'd really try to get a video monitor. I love being able to see what DS is doing before going to the room, especially at night times, when he might be crying a little bit, I look at the monitor and see if he's just trying to find a comfy position or if he actually woke up and I need to come and get him. When he was smaller and wasn't really mobile, we put the camera on the high corner of his crib, DH set it up in such a way that it'd be tilted a little bit so we'd be able to see the baby (I can actually move the camera to go down with the monitor but at that specific location, it couldn't move all the way down). Once DS started to be able to move around the crib, we decided to put it on top of one of his book shelves, and it's been there since then, DS is now 23 months.

I still use mine and my DS is 3. We mounted it on the wall up near the ceiling and have a cord running to an outlet on another wall. He has never touched it. We thought him early on not too and now he probably doesn't realize it's there.

Re: In your opinion, is a video baby monitor necessary?

Yes. It was peace of mind for me and to this day, at 4 years old I keep it on so I can hear her if she gets up, or needs me
I can also look in the morning to see if she is still sleeping or playing in her bed so I know whether or not I have to tip toe around when I get up

We just have an audio one and most nights I keep it muted because if he needs me, I can hear him just fine without it. I only turn on the volume if he's sick. Sometimes it'd be nice to have a video one, but I do not think it's a necessity.

We use ours for both of our kids - 4yr old and 15 months.

Like others said - peace of mind about what is going on.

I love mine so far. But I've had a baby for all of 2 weeks, so I'm no expert. It allows me to start my day while she's still sleeping and stay up in the den when she goes to bed. We got a duel camera one and ones on her bassinet and ones on the crib. Both are mounted to the wall above the beds, beds pulled out enough that if they fell they wouldn't land on her. The cord by the crib DH used painters tape to tape it behind furniture. When she outgrows the bassinet well probably place #2 on furniture in her room until we have child #2.

We didn't buy one until my first was 16 months. I never missed it one bit when she was small, I heard her if she needed me and I could go in and peek at her if I wanted. we only got it at 16 months because we were doing cio and I felt better having it then. I rarely use it now with an almost 3 year old and a 4 month old

For us it wasn't necessary because we live in an apartment, so DS isn't far away from us. We do have an audio monitor with the pad to go under the mattress that sends an alarm if he stops breathing.

I have 2 kids and only have one audio monitor. There have been a handful of occasions where I wished I had a video monitor but otherwise it hasn't been an issue.

Do you NEED one? Of course not, this is a very new technology and people prior to the past few years have done just fine without them. If you want one, go for it but I certainly don't think it's necessary.

Exactly this. I really don't need to watch my baby sleeping at every moment... And you can hear them cry very easily.

DS is 2 and we still use ours. We have 4 floors to our house and I would never hear him if I were in the basement. IMO, a video monitor is essential. I wouldn't dream of not having one.

A video monitor is not a necesity for me. I have an audio monitor-
If my daughter is awake I go check on her I do not need to watch her all the time.
