My mail carrier would come out from the back if he saw me at the post office and take care of what I ever needed. Actually, he used to get upset at the thought that I went to the post office as opposed to calling them and having him take care of whatever I needed, whether it was come to our house to pick up a package, bring me stamps, boxes, etc..

Maybe it's just me, but I find that really weird. I think I'd be uncomfortable if my mail man treated me this way. (Not the other package stuff, that's wonderful!) It's not his job to deliver stamps to you or pick up your packages... At least, none of the post offices where I live offer those services. They'd never be able to deliver all the mail if they were also doing this for everyone. If I called the post office and asked them to have my mailman deliver stamps to me, I think they'd hang up on me... Unless I placed an order online! Then he'd have to bring them. Chat Icon

It's nice that he goes above and beyond and you think the service is great, though. That's what matters!

My mailman at my old house was the BEST. I ran a small business from home & this was before you could buy postage online. I'd often under estimate the amount of postage I'd put in some of my mailings, he'd always just add it for me then leave me a little note with the amount. I'd always round it up or add a dollar or two extra for his time. I always gave him a generous tip at the holidays. I actually miss him, he was the quintessential American mailman.

I'm in the medical field & we as an office get food gifts everyday through december from patients. I've also gotten jewelry(from women), candles, gift cards, tickets to a show and many other things from patients as tokens of appreciation. Which is what a holiday tip is to me.

Maybe I missed this, but did anybody say what they tip their cleaning person? This is the first year that we've had a cleaning lady and I'm not sure what to give her.

My cleaning lady is self employed, and I provide the cleaning products for her. For what she charges me to clean my house (granted I have a huge house), I do not tip her. I did give her a little "bonus" with the last time because she went way above and beyond a couple of weeks ago, doing a true extensive clean (organzing closets, etc...)

Re: Holiday Tipping - Who, What and How?

I tip our:

mailperson $30

garbage $25 each (three of them)

nanny one weeks pay

cleaning lady (she comes once a week) $300. I love our cleaning lady. She has went above and beyond, is amazing to our daughter (gets her birthday gifts), and has been with us for three years. She doesn't charge me much for her stellar services, imo, and has shown character and integrity and reliability. I want very much to keep her happy with my family. I hope not to have to replace her. Otherwise, it would be 100 or so.

I always tip two extra people as well...

My hair colorist

and believe it or not, the front desk receptionist at my gym (she gets an amex card). She somehow always gets me into the full spin or strength classes.... Spaces open up, imagine that:)

I wont be tipping either just my opinion, I believe mailmen and Santitation workers get paid a salary with benefits, to do there job, If you have developed a personal relationship (like you have gotten to know yours over the years, I could see why you would tip)….but I don’t see it like being a waiter, most waiters make $3 an hour …( they live off there tips) ( I waitressed for 10 years) they make so little because they depend on their tips, unlike mailmen and sanitation workers, and I do feel a little insulted when I get a card telling me where to send their tips….just my opinion

We don't tip anyone. None of them go 'above and beyond' to deserve a tip. It's not my fault they have crappy jobs.

Just my 2 cents!

wow, crappy jobs? really?

In regards to me calling it a 'crappy' job - in my opinion, yes you have a 'crappy' job if you put your hand out and solicit tips from people.

This has ZERO to do with having a "crappy" job, but more to do with not having much tact.

Which seems to be plaguing you as well.

Just to clarify - the USPO is offering services to your home now to make lines at the main branches shorter, and easier on the customer during the year. This includes stamp ordering, mailing packages from home and the mailman picking them up from your doorstep. You pay online and they get a notice. It makes life easier on those of us who work early morning jobs before the USPO opens now at 9am. We get reminders about this at least once a week now in the mail on their services. They're trying to compete against UPS and FedEx, etc who offer similiar service.

Yeah....um, just say you don't tip. You don't have to say that it isn't your fault they have "crappy" jobs.

And who would do those jobs if these people didn't?

Re: Holiday Tipping - Who, What and How?

To answer the OP question -
We give the mailman a $25 Visa gift card or grocery card and the garbagemen $20 each (there's three).
We give the newspaper deliveryman $50 cuz we don't tip all year - we are on automated billing.

Amazingly, our mail is ALWAYS in the mailbox and the mailman takes the time to put any packages out of sight if we aren't home (we usually aren't) and our garbagemen take EVERYTHING we put out. I've seen them leave illegal garbage with pre-made stickers at other homes in my development saying "Special Collection", but they take anything we put out.

Maybe, if some of you who complain tried to make nice and acknowledge them for the holidays, you would get payback. I find it interesting that the people who tip seem to have no problems and the people who don't tip have major problems with their service.

No matter what their salary, these people are in the service industry - you tip at a restaurant and/or bar every time you go right? And you tip the person who cuts your hair correct?

I have never seen anything wrong with giving a holiday gift to people who perform a service for you all year long.

My mailman *****. He is the laziest man alive. He will leave a package under my mailbox instead of walking it up to my door (not a long walk). I literally have to hang mail out of my mailbox to have him mail it out....the flag-up means nothing to him. He gets no tip.

My UPS guy on the other hand is awesome. He always has a smile and he delivers stuff to me several times a week. I am giving him $100...I forgot to tip him last year, so it's for 2 years.

My hairdresser got a tip. $60

I'm giving our cleaning people a tip....

And the nanny that comes once a week...haven't decided what to give her yet though.

.you have to admit that someone throwing out your trash or walking in rain, sleet and snow to deliver your packages deserves a little something extra if they go out their way throughout the year.

IDK, it just seems a bit harsh, no?

I totally agree. I think the job is a lot harder (maybe not mentally but physically draining) than people realize.

Does working with "crazy" people all year long deserve something a little extra?Chat Icon Nope, still not convinced mailman or garbage men should get a tip.
