Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long) UPDATED

So DH and I live out of state. My parents still live here in LI. Their house has been on the market since June- not too long. My mom asked me if I could come home while DH is away on a business trip. Now I'm here and my dad is a complete basketcase. He's talking about "if he had a gun, he'd shoot himself" "keep me away from sharp objects". We're almost to the point of bringing him to the hospital. He's not sleeping because he's worried about the house not selling. He wants to retire but he can't until he pays off the house which he can't do until it sells. It's one huge vicious cycle. My poor mother is at her wits end. Chat Icon
They are at the point where they will take any acceptible offer right now but NOBODY IS OFFERING ANYTHING! The market is so terrible that even their real estate agent looks depressed. Ugh! I don't know what to do. I need to go home tomorrow but I'm worried about leaving.... Chat Icon

~*~ Update ~*~
Dad went to his MD who just confirmed that the whole ordeal with the house is simply overwhelmingly stressful. He did give him some medication so he's a little more relaxed now. AND- they had 3 couples come look at the house tonight. I really, really hope that something will move soon. I have to go back home to MA tomorrow and I don't wanna leave knowing that he's still on the edge.

Thanks for all the support/well-wishes.

They can't rent. They have so much accumulated debt that they NEED the sale of the house in order to pay off everything.

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)

Have several REA come to the house and tell you WHY the house is not selling.

They will tell you what needs to be done.

Maybe it's updating, clutter, etc...

They've updated EVERYTHING. New kitchen, they put on a new roof, new back steps, new basement windows. Everything the agents told them to fix- they have. They all just shake their heads and say that the market is in a slump.

It's a beautiful house and seems to be priced right.
Have they had a lot of open houses?

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)

what you bring up are 2 seperate problems... First the house isn't selling, but then there's the much more serious problem that your dad is very depressed, stressed, and could be suicidal.

Even if their house wasn't on the market, he likely could be set-off into a depression by something else.

Never mind the house. Take him to a psychiatrist or hospital ASAP. Even if he fights you.... he's way too unstable.

most depression is due to an individuals biochemistry, it's not something that someone can 'snap out of' on their own. They need medication to restore a normal equilibrium.
Take care of the home situation later.

Yes, I am surprised it is not sold yet. It's not expensive for Massapequa Park either.

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)

Every weekend they've had open houses with only 2-3 families coming per open house. It's soo frustrating

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)

it is a beautiful home!

Maybe they need to change their RE?
Is the RE showing it to anyone?

You need to have a motivated RE for it to get sold. If the RE is putting it on the back burner - then that could be why not alot of people are looking at it.

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)

I would lower the price if they really want to sell ASAP. Put it at $399,999...It'll show as the cheapest one with those specs, and if people search for under $400,000 it will come up. Yeah, maybe they'll get $15,000 less, but selling more quickly might be worth it to not hang onto it for another 6 mos or year.

This is probably the only way to go for a fast sale. I would also try to renegotiate with the agent for a lower comission to put a few extra bucks in your parets' pocket when all is said and done.

agree on both counts - most houses are sitting on the market for longer in 2 to 3 months now- that is normal

it took my Dad 6 months to sell his and he took about $80K off the price to get it sold

I think your Dad needs to talk to someone asap about the way he is reacting to this

It's a beautiful house and I've actually showed it to my sister who is looking to buy...unfortunately, and I am just being honest here, she doesn't like the location. According to the map it's right next to Sunrise Mall.

I pray that it sells asap! Chat Icon

That's what alot of people say when they see it. They look beyond the backyard and say "Ohh, that's the mall" but I have to be honest, in the 19 years that my parents have been here in this house, they have NEVER had a problem. And you'd never know it was the mall. No excess noise/traffic/etc.. None of that. In fact, it's been a blessing to step right out the fence in your backyard and have the mall right there. When I was a teenager, I loved it! LOL..
