Has anyone had a basement finished?
DH and I are buying a house with an unfinished 1,000 sq/ft. basement.
Just wondering how much it'll cost to finish it......

We're in the same boat although we just started the work & DH is a contractor..
first question: what does "finished" basement mean to you? What kinda work are you we talking about?
Jeanine- all I'm gonna say is .. WHY?
Must be the "immigrant" mentality my own father shares with your FIL
"cause he had the same bright idea..in Queens!

In our 1st house and our current one both were finished but not to our liking so we redid them ourselves. It is definatley well worth it we spend so much time there

We did. When we were looking we got quotes from $25K - $50K --  $50K for a BASEMENT?!?! We ended up using a very capable handyman who has his 2 sons working with him. We paid around $10K for labor and we bought all the supplies - prob. another $7K or so. (but we put in a kitchen and bath too). It came out so much nicer than we ever imagined. It's the best investment we ever made.

We had paneling too and they ripped it down and were able to attch the sheet rock into the framework where the paneling was. It was less$ that way.

Thanks! $7.5k is not bad at all! DH is in no way, shape, or form a handyman, so we'd have to hire somebody to do everything .
And we want to put a bedroom and half bath down there.
I had guessed this would cost us about $20k. Hopefully I'm right!

We just finished doing exactly everything you are looking to do. I can't give you an exact price of how much everything is cuz my DH and his uncle finished the whole basement themselves. Except the taping and spackling. I think we priced around at first to see how much it would cost for someone to hang the sheetrock and do the tape and spackling. Is was about $3000 for just that alone. DH and his friends hung the sheetrock themselevs. If you know someone who is handy, you can save alot of money.

if any 1 would like a price quote on a basement fm me i am a union carpenter that does basements on the side you basic basement with rip out and drop ceiling labor should be no where near 7k if its the basic basement around 4-5k labor
