Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI

I'm confused by this. Was she locked in the car and couldn't get out? Was there some kind of child locks engaged? Because this wasn't a baby or toddler. An 11 year old should know how to get out of a car.
How long was she in there?
Sleeping maybe?
How did the mom not realize only 2 kids followed her inside instead of 3?
Maybe this story is just missing a lot of facts...

I'm confused. Just read it quickly. The mom left her in the car after errands? Why didn't the girl get out of the car?

Girl dies in hot car on LI

I wonder if the child was asleep. She was not an infant or toddler, she was 11. I wonder why she didn't just get herself out of the car, or honk the horn to get the attention of someone in the house.
So tragic and heartbreaking. Today was so brutal. I got in my car at 7 this morning and it already felt like hell in that car...and it was only 82 degrees that early in the day. I can't imagine how horrific that car was after a few minutes with no AC. So unbelievably sad. Those poor parents.

Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI

How sad and heartbreaking! That poor girl! She must have suffered so much.
This makes no sense to me how or why this happened.
At 11 couldn’t she get herself out of the car?
Why would she be locked in the car in the driveway by herself?
When the mom locked the car she didn’t notice one of the kids was still inside?
I could see the mom maybe being busy and not realizing the girl wasn’t in the house right away, but her siblings didn’t notice either?... my kids are on top of each other every second so that seems odd.
I’m just trying to understand, not judge.. but I’m trying to understand how something like this could happen. It scares me. It’s terrifying.
So sad. Rest In Peace Chat Icon Chat Icon

Girl dies in hot car on LI

I just read another article that said she had special needs. That explains why she may not have been able to get herself out of the car. How awful.

Just saw that the NY Post is reporting that she had special needs. I guess that played a role.

Ah ok. Yeah I feel like that other article was missing a lot of info.

And by the looks of the mother's FB page, they had several kids, so it's possible she was just busy with the other kids, but I can't even fathom not knowing that my kid was still in the car. I will never understand these hot car deaths.

My heart hurts for that poor mother. I can see exactly how this happened. Mom gets out of the car with 45 bags of stuff, assumes all the kids are behind her, Mom goes in house, puts stuff down/away/gets distracted and then notices it's just not as noisy as it should be and goes looking. Let's face it, when your kids are older, like tweenage, you aren't watching them like a hawk like you do a toddler. Even though she had "special needs", I didn't read to what level. It's so variable. Whatever the case may be, the family must be devastated.

How devastating. My heart aches for the little girl and for her family. I can't imagine what she went through or what they are going through.

Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI

The odd thing is though, if her special needs were severe enough that she couldn't get out of a car on her own, then wouldn't someone have to be helping her out of the car when they arrived home in the first place?
That's the part I don't get.

Perhaps her special needs were not physical.

Whatever the case may be, this is so horrible.

I feel so terrible for this family and the amount of judgement and shame people are throwing at them as if they are not beating themselves up already.

Right, but again, if she had issues getting out of a car, whether it be physical or mental, then I would think she might need help getting out when they arrived home.
Totally not judging. Just genuinely curious. The articles really didn't have many details and I am trying to imagine exactly how this happened and what the circumstance was, that's all.

It is horrible regardless of the reasons. However, I do find it surprising that if the mom didn’t notice (which I get, I’m a hot mess with one kid) none of the siblings did. I didn’t grow up in a large family so I don’t know the dynamics but I would imagine a child would notice that their sister was missing.

I think it’s just human nature to try to understand what happened in such a senseless tragedy. My heart breaks for this young lady and her family.

The cynical side of me thinks that more info is going to come out a week from now and find out it was on purpose. :(

Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI

At that age everyone might have assumed she was off on her own or in the bathroom. I'm sure they all get in and out of the car many times a day without incident, so why would anyone think that day would be any different?

It doesn't say how long it took before they realized she was missing, but at the temps we've been having these past two days she could have been dead in a matter of 10-15 minutes. Mom and siblings could have EASILY been distracted for that long. 10 minutes is nothing. My kids are even younger and I've lost track of them at home for longer than that on particularly hectic days.

The fact is your children can't have 100% of your attention all the time. Especially not with more than one child. This COULD happen to any of us in the right (or wrong) conditions. I hate when people judge these situations after the fact with the benefit of hindsight.

i pray you're wrong, but experience has taught me to wait until the dust settles for any surprises.

very tragic!

i only had one, and he was glued to me. i lost him in the ikea in elizabeth for a whole minute and had them shut that store down.

i see my cousin with three kids who are close in age and i can see how you have to ask, "where's your sister?" i don't want to judge, but there definitely seems to be missing information.

Re: Girl dies in hot car on LI

The comments online (Facebook, etc) are so harsh and judgmental. This poor mother will live with this the rest of her life. I have three kids and I get that sometimes things get hectic and you assume everyone is fine because no one is screaming. I am also a special education teacher and have had kids who were wanderers. There are tons of scenarios that could have led to this; maybe she got out of the car and then went back in for some reason and accidentally got locked in and couldn't get out. I refuse to think that this mother intentionally did this because as a mother myself, I would hate for others to judge without the opportunity to speak out.
