Genetic counselor?

Tomorrow is my ultrascreen and when the office called to confirm the appt, I asked if I was seeing the genetic counselor as well. She told me I waived seeing the counselor (I did?) when I first made the appt. She pretty much dismissed that there was even a real need for me to see the counselor but of course, the choice is mine. Anyway, they can't fit me in tomorrow to see a counselor so would have to wait until the next available appt. My question is this - does everyone usually see the gc when they have their ultrascreen done. DH and I have no known genetic issues in our families. What do you think?

I don't see why it would have to be the same time as the ultrascreen, but I do think its worth doing. I found out I was a carrier for a condition that wasn't known in my family (fortunately my hubby wasn't a carrier).

Re: Genetic counselor?

It does not have to be at the same time but you may want to do it asap (next 1-2 wks top!) if you want to talk to someone. Just because of the time of the test that you may want to do.

Re: Genetic counselor?

Hmmm...no one ever mentioned seeing a genetic counselor to me - not my dr., not when I made the appt for my ultrascreen, not when I had it done (at a hospital) and not after I got the results. Is this something everyone does?

Re: Genetic counselor?

I was never offered the GC at my Ultrascreen...wasnt brought up by my doctor..

I already have a daughter with D/S and know what my risks are ect...

I personally dont think that its necessary simply for the Ultrascreen..you can always schedule an appointment later on if you want...

In the grand scheme of things the Ultrascreen is looking for such a small amount of Genetic Birth Defects that you can probably find out all you need to know about Down Syndrome, Edwards Syndrome, and Patau Syndrome Online...

I think usually you only do genetic counseling if you have certain ethnic backgrounds, known family histories or going for an amnio - otherwise I don't think most people do the genetic counseling. It wasn't offered to me until I had an issue and needed an amnio.

Re: Genetic counselor?

I didnt see a gc...but only because my test results came back normal and I didn't care about the specifics as long as it was normal! I say wait to see what your results say and then make the decision.

that's what I thought. At the beginning of both pregnancies they asked me lots of questions about my and DH's family background and ethnicities. We don't share much, so I guess that's why they didn't push a GC

I agree with all except the age issue - I am 40 & my DH is 48 - this has never come up as an issue, nor have I read anything about age being a reason to consult with a genetics counselor. I didn't even have to have the amnio according to my doctor since the other tests had good results.

Re: Genetic counselor?

i saw the gc right before my ultrascreen. i'm 35 - this way you decide if you want the integrated ultrascreen or the other one where you get your results sooner

I am 40 and was never referred to a GC. Never even considered it.
