I don't doubt these hospitals will vaccinated family memebers of employees- even if they don't qualify yet- especially if they have extra doses. I heard that they need to be used by a certain time, or they are no longer effective, so rather than throw them out I wouldn't be surprised if they did this.

'

The NYPD is doing the same thing. They are vaccinating family members. I am sure this is true for most places that are allocated vaccines. If they don't have enough people show up for appointments, they literally throw them away otherwise.

I am still not even close to being eligible for a vaccine nor is my husband. I am amazed that whole extended families are already almost fully vaccinated. Is everyone essential workers/teachers etc? Or does everyone in the world have comorbidities? I feel like nobody I know is vaccinated other than my parents because they are over 75.

I find it hard to believe as well. Many locations are not requesting ID or proof and part of me thinks many people are going for the shot when they should not be. NO one except for my parents, aunt and uncle have gotten the shot, so I dont know how it is so many extended families and friends have gotten the shot

I also think people who are not eligible are getting it or maybe we aren’t clear on who is.

I just had a friend tell me that she can go get the vaccine just because her husband works in the hospital. He is not a dr or nurse either. He does some type of maintenance but basically he is not really around patience. I know he was eligible but didn’t realize family members I guess you live with are eligible also!

I didn't realize it either - and was looking for guidance as someone told me that. I think it just changed.

There are appointments available right now at the local state sites - they just released them this am.

ETA - but there isn't an option to say I live with someone that is public facing so I'm eligible and under 60. It still just has the same working options and co-morbidities.

Yeah I don't' think living with someone who is front line qualifies you. It's not listed at least.

I didn’t think so either. She said she can go to her DH hospital (it’s a Northwell one) and get it if she wants it.
Who knows how accurate she has it she’s on the fence of getting it but she is swearing she can go and someone her DH works with wife went in and got it.

This is exactly what happens. Family members are put on a waiting list and you can get a call at the end of the day saying "we have XX extra doses, be here at this time and you can get vaccinated".

Honestly, if that is allowed, it makes sense. Family members have borne extreme risk all year so that their family could be on the front lines, caring for sick patients. It makes sense to let them into the line early, IMO.

This makes sense but the way she made it sound was the she can just call make an appointment and go in but then again I won’t be surprised if she has it wrong.

I have nothing against it if it’s allowed. I was just pointing out that I think more people are eligible then we realize.

I just find it interesting that they keep adding more people to be eligible when the ones that have been still can’t get appointments.

Which I also then find interesting lol because I feel like so many people said they weren’t getting it Chat Icon

From what I have seen on the news, it's obviously difficult to get the vaccine in areas such as the Northeast, CA, etc, but in AL they have an oversupply because of vaccine hesitancy. They are even accepting people from other states just to use up their vaccine allocations.

I have no problem with it either and it makes sense - I just hadn't seen it anywhere.

I know they are adding while eligible people haven't gotten appointments yet but, I find many of these eligible people are waiting or have specific parameters that need to be met for them to get it - like they don't want to travel to NYC for one. Or they don't want to call anyone and get on a list. Or they only try once (they meaning the eligible and most likely a younger family member) and then they go on Facebook and complain but they don't really try. Or they only try one avenue - like they get on the list at once place instead of many.

It takes a little work but it's not impossible to find appointments.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that this is not happening at Stony Brook. Many people who accompany those getting vaccines ask about getting their vaccine if there is "left over" at the end of the day. There are usually, maybe a couple of doses left (about 1-3 max) because the only "left over" is if there is a vial that was not fully used for those who do have appointments. Those left over doses will only be given to people who are eligible but just couldn't get an appointment.

You are correct with that.

The issue with ones allocated to places like the NYPD is that they are not opening them to the general public and there are many POs who are not getting the vaccine so they have too many leftover. I personally think that supply should now be funneled to the general population for people who want them. At this point if you wanted the vaccine and are in the NYPD, you should have been able to secure your first dose already.

This is true too. My mom has been trying at first she wasn’t eligible based on just her age but she was because she is compromised but she couldn’t get an appointment! But she also didn’t want to go to the City to get it and from what she said most pharmacies were not offering it to anyone who wasn’t 65+.
She luckily got one today! Not sure if it’s because it opened up to 60+ or she just lucked out cause she is going to jones beach and not a pharmacy. Granted it’s the appointment is not for another month but at least she got an appointment.

Re: Fully vaccinated people can gather without masks, CDC says

The issue is a lot of elderly people CAN'T travel to NYC. Or they are scared to because if they have to take mass transit they are exposing themselves to a lot of people and maybe they've been staying home all year to avoid that. Now in order to get a Covid shot you should have to hop on the train?
Driving to NYC is not an option for everyone- myself included
I don't feel you should have to travel out of your county to get a vaccine- especially not these people driving 6 hours to get one- get the eff out of here.
What kind of a system is that?

A lot of state sites opened spots today. They announced it yesterday along with the age rage lowering.

But yes, people not being able to travel is a big issue. The pop ups in low income areas is helping with that a little, but there are still a lot of people being left out. There are politicians in Rockland County trying to get a mass site there because while people lump it with Westchester, it's on the other side f the river. Since pharmacies only take 60+, people with health issues have nowhere to go if they can' t get to another county.

Yes - there is one place in Rockland where you can get vaccines if you are under 65 right now (and not a first responder). There isn't much of a difference between traveling to Javits or Westchester so I went to Javits (I understand it's not as easy from LI, and in some cases over an hour).

But, there are a lot of people (who are mobile and capable) in this area complaining that they can't find anything but there seem to be more options and opportunities popping up - if you look around.

ETA - an example is my neighbor, who is beyond concerned about Covid. Her daughter works in a restaurant, is highly capable of driving somewhere, but she can't find an appt. And she continually complains on FB. And people tell her where to go. But she doesn't listen, and just complains.

I know there are people who are picky with where they go (my BIL mom being one of them because she didn’t want to go any further then 5m from her house - older and stubborn and it took me 2 weeks of non stop looking but I found it for her)
It’s not the picky people that concern me. It’s the 80+ crowd who really don’t understand how to get appts. Or those who say “I clicked it and said non available”. they don’t grasp the click til your fingers are numb concept you need to do in order to get appts sometimes.

I have gotten almost 2 dozen appts for seniors in NJ and a couple in NY. They just couldn’t get it and their kids were too busy to be bothered (that’s another story)

I wish it was enough for all and it’s not. People are “skipping the line” and it’s literally twisting my guts.

I’d like to do this. I have some extra time in the mornings, and because of the time difference, the websites are easier to use.

My question is what did you do when it got to the health info part of booking the appointment? When I booked the appointments for my parents, they asked for some info which I did not know. My dad was easy because he hasn’t been to a doctor in 10 years (75+, bless his heart), and my mom goes often to the doctor, but I don’t know everything.

So what do you do? How do I sign up to offer this service?

Honestly, if that is allowed, it makes sense. Family members have borne extreme risk all year so that their family could be on the front lines, caring for sick patients. It makes sense to let them into the line early, IMO.

I thinkl I heard on the radio this morning, they lowered the age to 60.

Agree with this 100%.

There are vaccine hunter FB groups where people fill out a google form and people then try to secure appointments for them. If you search they should be easy to find. If you can’t, let me know and I’ll FM you links.

Re: Fully vaccinated people can gather without masks, CDC says

As of yesterday, there were many appointments that opened up. It was for May.
My school has Walgreens coming in for employees this Saturday, but they are giving J & J.
They said they might open up to family members who are eligible.

All you need is the persons full name, DOB, address, cell phone # and email address. You answer I don’t know to all medical questions and say No health insurance. some sites asked for SS # or drivers license #, I just put all 0’s.

For older people who didn’t have email, I made them one on gmail and told them their confirmation or forwarded to their children.

I joined LI , NY and NJ Facebook pages for people looking for vaccines. It honestly started with me getting my
Mom hers. My sister was trying with no success. I started to try and once the pharmacies opened up, I was able to grab her appt within a day. Then her friend asked for help. And another. Then being in the group and seeing the desperation in these seniors posts, I would help as they posted. There are groups of people within these FB groups that make a hundred appts. A day. Though they don’t cater to special needs (like my bil mom who would only go to a specific place) they get whatever is available even if that means people have to drive an hour. Most elderly cannot. So I worked my little fingers to the bone and got appts within driving distance for those I helped. It’s definitely harder to to but can be done if you don’t give up.

Put it this way, I spent so much time on a day off once that I woke up to go to the bathroom and I noticed my thumb was doing the motion as if I was on my phone hitting the search for appts button !!

that's great. My town has a volunteer group to help seniors, but they said they don't need any help right now.

It is kind of ridiculous that there is even a need for this, but it is good that people are helping.

Do you have any tips for pharmacy appointments? Every time I check CVS everything but 2 places in the Finger Lakes are booked. Is there a certain time or day they release new appointments?

Yes
CVS drops new appts between 5am-7am everyday but Sunday
Rite aid drops new appts every nigh starting at 11:45pm but they go real quick
Walgreens drops new appts every night at midnight

A trick to get appts even if it says fully booked is to go under a state that has appts. Fill out questions and then when you go to search put In zip code you are looking for. Keep hitting magnifying glass. They pop up sometimes that way. Also try typing in neighboring codes - it gives you a certain radius. So if you want to go a little more E, N , W or S - you can find zip codes in those areas and type them in. That’ll gibe you a better chance of finding something
