driving down to Florida to save $ ?

It sounds like you have made your decision...but I wanted to let you know that I just booked with Southwest out of LGA for that week for $387 a person. So not THAT bad considering when I looked earlier in the week out of ISP it was $$$$! But we do have a connection each way, which stinks. But I made sure to connect through Atlanta vs. some of the other cold weather cities in case of snow.

We drove straight both ways with small children. Was not as bad as I thought it would be and would definitely do it again. It was so nice not to worry about what we were packing, dealing with airport etc. Liked having our car, with car seats once we were there. We left after dinner on our way out of NY and midday when we left FL.

I did see some like that but then your sucking up a whole day flying/at airports, right? I've only ever done direst before. I thought of that, but figured if it meant
A day of airports, I rather drive and save what I could. What time will you leave and then finally land? Curious. Maybe I'll think that over.

To me it's not worth it b/c it's basically 4 travel days .....in the car, all day.

I'd rather go someplace else w/ a less $$$ flight or closer drive and have the extra 4 days to enjoy my vacation -

Exactly this. 4 days of travel time is not worth it. I would rather not go than drive to FL. I would go somewhere cheaper or just go somewhere closer to drive to.

The car train from Lorton, VA is very expensive. It probably won't save you any money.

Our flight out leaves at 1:45 and lands in orlando at 6:45, the coming back leaves at 9:55 and gets into NY at 2:45. So not terribly bad! 2 hours added on each way roughly. We did it once before out of LGA with a connection over the Jewish Holiday in September last year. My kids did get a kick out of being in a "new" state (i.e. Tennessee was last connection)

We did it 2 years ago down to Disney for Easter break. I said never again but I think it's like childbirth and you forget as time goes on. So we're going on Disney cruise for Feb break and driving down. To reward us for driving, I used the money we're saving and booked another trip in April when we'll fly down.

We do it often, about 3x per year. Disney is not as far as driving to Miami. I consider Disney a piece of cake. Leave about 4 am be there or close around midnight. Well worth it. We could not afford all our trips if we flew.

If you are driving take the car train. Loads by Virginia? DC. Let's out right next to Disney.

Sounds great, but it's just as expensive as flying. I put in some dates for October, which is when we are thinking of going to Disney, and it was almost $1,500. For that price, I'd rather fly and take the magical express.

Sometimes you can get it with a room for $700, way cheaper coach but I could not survive. It saves you a rental car too if you need it.

When you do that , how do you feel the next day? Or are the vacation juices flowing and you just are in "go" mode?

Re: driving down to Florida to save $ ?

I drive to Florida from LI at least once a year for the last 4 years, with two young kids. I've driven straight through and I've also stopped for the night, last time I had my puppy with me too.. I won't lie, it's hard as hell. I would much rather fly, but can't for other reasons. For $700+ per ticket, I wouldn't even question driving. Lol.

My children are flexible with their sleep times. Therefore when they go to bed at midnight, they will sleep late and we will recover by the next day. I might be more difficult if your children can't sleep in.

I've done it with my two kids and two dogs many times. While its not ideal, it really isn't as bad as it seems.

Re: driving down to Florida to save $ ?

Did it this past July with dh and a 4 and 6 year old(not to save money but dh won't get on a plane). Left on Saturday morning around 9am- which should have been earlier we got to somewhere in GA ( 3 hours away from disney) at 2 am. Slept, showered, had breakfast, left around 10am got to disney at 1pm checked in brought stuff to room, got to Epcot at 3pm. Friday(checkout day) left disney noon-drove straight- got home Saturday morning around 9am. That was a little rough. Dh drove most of the trip though I did give him breaks but I also felt like I couldn't sleep when he was driving because I didn't want him to fall asleep. It was fine but if we do it again( which we probably will) we would stop on way home.

I have never seen $1k ticked to FL. Have you searched all the airports.

I have driven once as an adult and with no kids and I would rather not go. It's a waste of 4 days. So you are better or searching a day before and after etc. [/QUOTE
