Drive or Train to Yankees game on the 4th?

Do you think it would be better to drive or take the train to the Yankees game on July 4th? I say drive and my DH is insisting on the train because of traffic. It's a 1:05 game. I personally dread being on the train's schedule. We live on the Nassau/Suffolk border.

ETA: Took us one hour door to door there and same coming home! Chat Icon Not an ounce of traffic!!! Quickest ride ever!

My parents live in the Bronx, so I drive there on most holidays. Traffic leaving LI is fine. It's always worse going to LI. But I get off the first exit over the Throggs Neck Bridge. After the bridge, the traffic is usually bad.

So, it's a crap shoot. You just never know what traffic will be like. I say you listen to the traffic news and decide that morning.

Train.
Never ever drive in nyc.
There is no reason to with mass transit.
Plus parking is expensive near Yankee Stadium. Figure $40.
I always take the train. Its easy .
Also bear in mind its 4th of July and when you get out of the game you will be right in the midsr of people heading home from the fireworks. Bbqs, trips etc.
I am getting anxiety just thinking about it

Personally I would drive on,y because I am like you and don’t like being n a train schedule and I just don’t like mass transit. But I would expect traffic and make sure I leave with plenty of time to get there

Will you guys be drinking? I personally can't sit through a baseball game without boozing, so my vote is train!

I always drive to Yankees games even when I lived in Queens.

Manhattan is the only place where I always take public transportation to get to, to me that’s the city.

Good point but no, we will have our kids with us and we usually don't drink when we are out with them.

Re: Drive or Train to Yankees game on the 4th?

I never realized how many people prefer to sit in traffic than take a few trains. Now I know why traffic is so bad on LI and in the boroughs.

Unless you’re in Manhattan it’s not easy to get to the Bronx from the other boroughs. For example when I lived in Queens, I would’ve had to take the bus to the train, then take the train into the city to transfer to one for the Bronx. When all I had to do was jump on the highway and drive to the stadium in 30min.

Same for NJ, 30 min drive, or 1.5-2hr train commute.

Uber if we’re both drinking lol

ETA: in all my years I lived in Queens the times I hit brutal traffic was going to LI or the city. Navigating around the boroughs isn’t bad with side streets and service roads.

This. I drive anywhere that isn't Manhattan. Even Manhattan I'll drive to certain parts. Now that I live on LI I'll take the train to atlantic terminal if I need to go to Brooklyn, but I drove to Brooklyn when I lived in Queens.

I take the LIRR to Penn then the 4 or 6 to the Bronx.
Are there subways in the other boroughs that can get you to Penn? Genuinely curious as I dont know

If I needed to get to Penn from where I grew up I would take the Q or R to herald square and walk over. But I don't think I ever had to because the first time I was ever in Penn was the Monday after I moved out here. Had I done a dry run, I wouldn't have moved here. To think of the money and misery I would have saved....

ETA if DH and I were going to a game and planned to drink we would absolutely take the train.

Public transit is built to get you in and out of Manhattan. Going from one boro to another usually involves multiple trains or buses. That's why people prefer to drive.

Yes there are trains that can take you to Penn but depending where you are there will be many stops and you may have to take two trains to get to penn and then a third in the city. Also holiday and weekend schedules aren’t like commuting during the week. You can wait 45 minutes for a bus.

Re: Drive or Train to Yankees game on the 4th?

I just have a real issue with traffic. Like i cant do it. I feel my blood pressure rise. So i prefer to take 2, 3 even 4 trains to avoid that.
I have gone to many Yankee games and never had an issue with trains.
Again, just me. I can't handle traffic .
But I also won't wait on lines for anything either. I will put my stuff down and walk right out of a store if the line is too long

In this case, I would take the train. But, since you're going through Manhattan anyway, I would plan a stop there. Maybe dinner, or the High Line, or even just walking around somewhere. But if you're just going to the game and then home, then driving may be better.

Re: Drive or Train to Yankees game on the 4th?

I would drive. It's super easy and the traffic is never as bad as you think.

Paying for parking is the equivalent of taking mass transit. Also, since you will have your kids with you, when you want to leave, you can just leave. You don't have to make your way back to Penn Station to then wait for a train.

We park in a lot on 161st St right across from the stadium... $30. It's right off the Major Deegan so it's easy off, easy back on.

Good luck! Have fun!!!!

Drive, but definitely plan for traffic.

We took the train to Yankee Stadium a month ago and it took us 3 hours door to door from North Shore nassau - granted, there was a 25 min subway delay - but we missed a good part of the game and were standing stuck under the ground for a long time (tough for kids).

I commute in every day to Penn for work so the thought of doing it on a day off is something I try to avoid.

it would be so much easier to be a Mets fan.

To go to the Bronx. I would drive. Went to Arthur Ave a couple of weeks ago on a Sat afternoon and it took exactly an hour to get there from Farmingdale. I'm sure there will be more traffic on the 4th, but at that time of day, I don't think it will be terrible
