LIke you best friends or close freinds are they Auny MAry or Uncle JOhn even though they are in no way blood related to you?
I ask becasue a friend of mine
( Noreen, if your readfing this yes its the friend you are thinking of LOL) who just took it upon herself to say hi im aunt mary.. Now i dont mind im not against it but its a little odd thatshe starte dthis and not me.. She even signs cards aunt mary and uncle john..

Yes, we do refer to our close friends as "Uncle" or "Aunt." For me, it's mostly a matter of respect. I'm not into the whole first name thing--I don't even call my friends' parents by their first names and I think "Mr. or Mrs. So and So" is a bit too formal for me. So "Aunt" and "Uncle" are right in the middle.

So, no, I wouldn't mind it at all, and I kind of like it.

I started having my friend clare being called aunt because we are so close she is practically a sister so I welcome it and now she does it on her own.

i see nothign wrong with it and i probobly would have done it myself but what i find weird is the other person calling themselves that to your child without you initiating it. do you see what i mean?

Its not like i said to my dd ( well she is 6 months she wouldnt know the difference what i said LOL) Allison this is aunt mary. My friend just signs cards aunt mary or says aunt marys here to visit.

This drives my sister(the real Aunt) nuts but I don't mind it. I consider my close friend my extended family.

I only do that with the God Mother. I have a really close friend that calls me Aunt XXX to her son but I have so many dear friends and hubby and I don't like the whole formal Aunt/Uncle thing.

Yes we do. I would think its odd if they started calling themselves that though.

We definitely refer to our close friends as aunt and uncle.

Yes, I do this. Growing up, I had an aunt & uncle that were closer to us than our blood relatives. If we are that close to friends of ours, I love that DD will call my friends Aunt & Uncle..

NO! and it drives me nuts when my friends refer to themselves as aunt and uncle...and whats worse is one friend of mine - her parents refer to themselves as aunt and uncle....it reallly annoys me...I guess because I come from a large family and there are lots of "real" aunts and uncles I dont need anymore...they can be close to my DD without having an aunt or uncle title.

all friends our age are referred to as aunts and uncles. it would be rude to address them by their names. i grew up that way, and this applies to just about everyone we know.. i personally never even thought of this as an issue.

Yes we do it to our really close friends. My 3 Best friends are DD "Aunts" and Dh 2 best friends are "uncles" but we also call their spouses the Aunt and uncle as well...

No they call my friends by my first name

Although I am having a hard time with my SIL; she's teaching our neice to call us by our first name. It drives me NUTS!!!!

DH refers to some of our friends as aunt and uncle to our son. It irks me and I can't do it and he gets ****** at me that I don't. He grew up that way and I didn't. But he grew up without true aunts and uncles since his parents are only children. To me aunt and uncle refer to family and as much as friends are important to me they aren't my family and I personally reserve that special title for them. Right now it isn't an issue since he is so young but will as he gets older - that and the first name vs Mr and Mrs Last Name (I grew up with most everyone as a first name as far as parents/family friends and those of his that aren't aunts and uncles were mr and mrs - I can't be that formal).

I refer to my cousins and close friends as "aunt" or "uncle".

no - im not a fan of that.
I refer to my friends to my daughter by their first name - i don't want to confuse the child and make her think everyone is her aunt and uncle - but thats just me.

I do refer to my aunts and uncles are her aunt and uncles and cousins - ill refer to them by their first name.


If its someone older - Ill refer DD to them as Mr. and Mrs. so and so....

My girls did this. Even now that they are grown women, they still call them "aunt" and "uncle".
