Do you NEED the infant insert for the Ergo Baby carrier?

I just was at the store, and it said with NB insert, fits NB up to 40 lbs. But BBB website says nothing about needing it.

Does anyne have the ErgoBaby Carrier, and if so...can you use it with a NB?

I've had an ergo for all three kids and I use it for my newborns without the insert. There is a little hood that pops out for when they are sleeping and I would use that to help support their heads.

I did have the insert but rarely used it...found it more awkward cuz it kept sliding around
