Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

My family calls me a b!tch because I don't let DS have any candy. I have no problem if other parents give their child candy, but it's just not for me. I'd rather he eat pretzels or fruit. To my knowledge, he's never even had a lollipop (I have no control over what the grandparents give to him when he stays over Chat Icon) All of the candy he got for Halloween got donated to send to the troops.

He's a generally healthy eater, his favorite food is broccoli and his favorite drink is water.

Is it really THAT horrible that I don't allow him to eat candy? Chat Icon

i believe in "everything in moderation".

I let my 23 month old having sweets but if cantaloupe and a cupcake were in front of him, he's pick the cantaloupe.

Tyler gets it because it's around Jack more often but I really try to limit him. He's like a crack addict when he gets his hand on candy.

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

Not horrible at all. I don't give my DS candy either. He's 25 months and has tasted a lollipop on 3 occasions - a few licks once after a haircut, one time my dad gave him an organic one to try, and now after halloween when he found the candy stash.

I just feel that I'd rather keep him away from candy as long as I can. I know he'll eat candy, but I try to limit sugar consumption while he's still little. Same with juice, I don't give him juice. I do let him have like an ounce at school (1 day x week) so he doesn't feel different from the other kids. Then he asks for his sippy with water.

We dont have it in the house , and my ds never asks for any, he is 3 yo. If someone were to give Him candy he wouldn't eat it. I left a bag of Swedish fish and found 2 headless fish he bit and put back. He must not like sweets bc he doesn't eat fruit either!

I am all for moderation. If it keeps him happy while he's getting his haircut, so be it. if he goes "pee-pee" on the potty he gets a pop. Candy, however, is not part of his daily "diet" and we dont keep it in the house (but for the lollipop stash under the sink in the bathroom).

I let her have a little once in awhile. She's had a couple of lollipops before and a 2 chocolates on Halloween. The rest DH and I ate and threw out (she didn't have much) Chat Icon

I think its great what you're doing...I'd love if DD's favorite food was broccoli! She is more obsessed with greek yogurt and cheese...not too bad though LOL

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

Thanks girls! My aunt made me feel like a horrible mother and that I deprive him of EVERYTHING yesterday when she offered him a lollipop and I asked her if he could have an apple or even some crackers instead.

He has all the time in the world to eat candy, I want to try to establish healthy habits while I still can. Chat Icon

I do the same thing. The one thing that I don't love is that their pediatrician gives out lolly pops at the end of the visit. They have one lick or I "save" them and then they get thrown out.

DS has had a few licks of a lollipops here and there bjt has no interest really in them. He's had m&ms once but they made him crazy so I haven't given them to him since.

He seems to like chips and pretzels better than sweets.

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

My twins are only 14 months but Im trying to hold off with all sweets as long as possible. Cake, cookies, sugary cereals, etc.- they don't have it. The only exception I made was their birthday cake, they went nuts with it! It's only a matter of time before they'll be exposed to it but for now I try to keep their eating habits as healthy as possible.

I dont see anything wrong with what you're doing. If your family says you're a b!tch because of it, oh well.

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

OMG you are so NOT a ***** for that. I am sorta jealous....I wish I didn't let my DD have it (she has it in moderation) but it is really not good for their teeth and body at all. I went to see a nutritionist for borderline GD (I am 17 wks preg) and I showed her the fruit snacks and said this is ok for DD right? She said no way it is just like Candy and that sticks to their teeth etc....I think you are being cautious and like the other poster said they have their whole life to enjoy Candy. We don't let DD have soda and I know alot of other people who do....oh well. Just not something we want her having. Stick to what you believe :)

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

Candy, ice cream, cake, cookies... all for special occasions. We don't really keep it in the house (we don't eat it often) so she'd never have it that often anyway. She never asks for it and loves her fruit as "dessert" so I figure why even offer her sweets if she doesn't care.

Nope, she's never had a lollipop, candy or fruit snacks. I have nothing wrong with kids having candy, just not something I've ever given her. She doesn't understand or look for it so why bother!?

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

Joey likes M&Ms but he gets like 10 at a time and hardly ever. Lollipops he doesn't get it lol, he likes putting them in my mouth but won't eat them himself. But I'm not sure what other candy I'd give him.

he gets cookies though. . .but I don't think of that as candy.

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

My son has had maybe 4 or 5 bites of candy in his 22 months of life. He's never had a lollipop. He's tried a few pieces of chocolate, mainly around Halloween. He is a very healthy eater, LOVES fruit, only drinks water and milk (doesn't drink any juice) and I really try to keep it that way. I've been called mean for not giving him juice regularly, so I know how you feel. I think there is nothing wrong with it, there is certainly no need for them to have sweets. And they can't miss what they don't know. There will plenty of time in their lives to have sweets. I feel like why not establish really good healthy habits at a really young age?? I'm with you!

Re: Do you allow your 2-year old to have candy?

JJ does eat candy/chocolate but all in moderation. He is a bigtime fruit kid & loves his veggies. I usuallly give him it when he does something good or just as a treat. He does know his limitations though.

For the most part though, he will rather have pretzels or an apple then candy. With that said, Nicholas really hasn't had any but that's more bc he has no teeth.

I do not think you are a bad mommy. We all have things that we do not allow our kids to do if have that people may feel is strange.

Its more of a last straw thing aka moms bribe tool. If you do xyz, I will give you M&M's. He is a chocolate crackhead like my dh. I literally move the m&m's every morning because he knows where I stash them. He doesnt get it everyday, but i do give him like 8-10 a couple of times a week. Also, lollipops are a staple in my bag. They are the instant stop to a major meltdown in public. At home, I dont give in, but in a store hell yeah.

DD is 16 months and she has had some bits of chocolate and some lollipops. . . I save the big guns (ie lollipops) for haircuts! LOL nothing makes her sit still for a haircut like a nice hair covered lolli!
