Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

is so, which one is good?
DD will be sleeping in her bassinet next to my bed for the first few months, then she will graduate to her own crib Chat Icon

I had registered for one, received it, then returned it after reading in more than one place that they can cause SIDS! Just thought I'd throw that out there!

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

the point of a sleep positioner, i am pretty sure, is to help babies who have trouble sleeping flat on their backs. it allows them to sleep on their sides or slightly elevated. i have never heard that they prevented SIDS.

i ended up getting one for DS because he was not sleeping well except when held, so we got one that was curved and had a heartbeat simulator in it.

i don't know anything about the risk of SIDS, but i felt confident in my decision to get one. it's a personal choice. Chat Icon

Thats what I had thought, and then I read in 2 seperate articles all in one day about it causing sids! I took it as a sign and returned it!

But then I've heard of pediatricians recommending them, so who knows!! i just figured I'd throw it out there.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

I heard they may cause sids also, but I registered for one anyway. My child prep course said that babies should sleep slighty elevated, especially after they eat. I registered for one with a slight incline. I will probably just use it in the beginning.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

I bought one and attempted to use it when DD was tiny... I was told by BBB that it was the best one...

Well... DD would slide down! I mean all the way to the bottom. It ended up being worthless for us and I've heard a few similar complaints... but my BFF swears by them.

We tried an incline but within seconds Emerson just slid right down the bassinet so that didn't work. To avoid spit-up we always kept her upright in our arms for 20-30 min. after feedings before putting her down to bed and it worked like a charm.

We have been using The First Years sleep positioner because Emerson hated being on her back and would roll to the right so the positioner kept her in place and made her feel snug so she would sleep.

As far as it bing a SIDS risk I would agree for one reason..........now that she is almost 4 months she wriggles around her crib a lot now and she often slides down the positioner and I've found her with her head in between the positioner so if she turned to the side her face would be pressed into it. Therefore, we stopped now with the positioner but it did help for a time so it was worthwhile.

Good advice!! I figured the positioner didn't work for ever.

we didn't either, but then bought one when DS was 3 days old because he just wouldn't sleep in his crib! it became a necessity!

so many things are recommended not to use because of SIDS. but you have to do what's best for you and your baby! i never thought i'd use one, but it became a necessity. as soon as we bought it, DS slept. it had a fake heartbeat in it which soothed him.

i wouldn't buy one before the baby is here though since you don't know if he needs it or which kind is better for him. ours wasn't an incline--he didn't need that. it was a "cradler" with a heartbeat--exactly what HE needed.

so wait and see--you can always send DH to BRU to get one---or you can go with him 3 days PP like i did Chat Icon

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

Ok, I just need to say this - we don't know what causes SIDS. That's why it's "sudden infant death syndrome". If we knew what the causes were, it'd have a far less ambiguous name. That doesn't mean you have to be comfortable with positioners, bumpers, blankets but there is no way any study or article proved a definitive cause and effect relationship between sleep positioners and SIDS Chat Icon

We used one because of DS's reflux. If you're going to purchase one they recommend the ones that are thicker at the top - it helps avoid flat head, though I'm not sure how Chat Icon

I had to use one with Andrew because he had breathing issues and reflux. I had the inclined to sleep.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

According to the AAP NOTHING should be in the crib. That includes sleep positioners. To me, it wasn't worth the risk. We used an approved wedge under the mattress to elevate DD's head to help with reflux.

Yes, it was difficult at first because DD (both 1 and 2, actually) didn't like being on her back- but she eventually got used to it.

ETA: I had a friend whose son died from SIDS, so I'm a little more sensitive to it.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

My friend got one after her baby was born because her baby has bad reflux so she can't sleep completely horizontal. So the sleep positioner helps with the reflux.

I got one but haven't used it and have no plans to at this point. DS sleeps well on his back in his cradle. Why mess with that at this point?

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

I have one to keep on hand, should I need it. I am concerned about the SIDS risk as I am sure everyone else is... but, I think for the first few days, it helps the baby to recreate the feeling of being in the womb.

If I don't use it-- I don't use it... It was cheap.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

It is up to if you prefer to have a sleep postioner...I decided to use it..but you can always use the rolled up receiving blanket like they use in the hospital..I also used folded towels underneath the mattress of the bassinet to elevate it.

I used the Especially for Baby Breathe Easy Sleep Positioner.

No you don't need one - in fact my hospital and my ped both told me not to use one as they were a SIDS risk.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

I have to say--I bought one and kept the receipt, thinking I'd return it after the baby was born and we realized we didn't need it...

...boy, was I wrong! Our DD likes to be snuggled, but not swaddled. We started using the sleep positioner in the bassinet, and I HONESTLY believe it's part of the reason she is sleeping so well. Babies' nervous systems are still developing when they are born, so their arms do a lot of flailing around when they're drifting off to sleep. The first few nights, DD would wake herself up because of it. The sleep positioner has saved us. We have the Boppy brand sleep positioner, I think it was $14.99 at Target.

I will also add that I think we, as a society, have taken the causes of SIDS wayyyy too far. I know that sounds ridiculous--I can't imagine what it would be like to have my baby die suddenly--but I think we've gone way over the edge in marking things that "cause SIDS". I am extremely confident that as long as I use caution and common sense, I am doing everything I can to prevent SIDS from happening.

Re: Do I need an infant sleep positioner?

I really thought the purpose of the positioner is to make sure the baby stays on her back, so she doesn't roll on to her side and risk suffocation.

I think I will get one just to have it handy. Thank you all for your input!! Chat Icon

The baby won't be able to roll for the first few weeks. I'm not exactly sure when they start, but when my DD starts showing signs of turning over, we'll stop using then. Until then, it's a great thing to have. Chat Icon
