My DD was born with cancer. She was diagnosed when she was only a few months old. I too took this news very hard. I can't help but picture my daughter having a life long struggle only having it to end short and she not being able to achieve all she has the potential to achieve.

Cancer sucks. And there are so few improvements that have been made to the treatments, and half the treatments cause new cancers, or organ failures etc. When everyone was screaming about Ebola, I shook my head and thought, the real danger is the fact that 564,800 people die of cancer a year. And we aren't screaming in the streets trying to find away to stop this. It is an epidemic.

I am incredibly sorry to hear about your daughter. Chat Icon Chat Icon However, I totally agree with you. When people were mentioning Ebola, I was more scared of cancer. My mom has stage 4 breast cancer and my Grandma died of ovarian and breast cancers. My Aunt also got ovarian and breast cancer, but she caught them very early. Still, many times when cancer is "cured" it comes back, as in Diem's case. This is mind boggling to me. So many people are being affected by it. The treatments are so hard for people, it is not an easy process to try to keep at bay. I wish the medical community could do more.

I wonder if there will ever e a cure for cancer.
Like 100 years from now will there be a cure?
With all the medical breakthoughs and technology we have today, we still can't find a cure.

This poor girl went through so much in her short life. Hope she is finally resting in peace.

So sad.

Cancer is a hue money maker, so sadly if there is a cure, I don't think we will ever see it.

Really? That's a horrible depressing idea.

I can't imagine that whoever finds a cure wouldn't be motivated by all the $$$ they would make. I personally believe a cure will come through some sort of DNA/gene therapy.

I think we will only see it if the cure makes more money than the treatment, but I hope I am wrong. We've made so little progress against many types of cancer in the last 60 years. The death rate for cancers like lung and pancreatic are virtually identical to what they were 40,50 or 60 years ago. Very depressing.

Yup.

If you have ever listened to daytime talk radio, or even daytime news channels on TV, you will see every other advertisement is for a cancer treatment center, doctor, etc. It's big business.

In addition, there are so many natural cures to other ailments these days, but they are pushed to the wayside by doctor's because they don't make money for big pharma. When cancer has a cure, or a vaccine, can you imagine how much money the industry will lose? It's a sad reality that money talks. (and I don't want to take away from the condolences in this post for this brave soul that was gone too soon, so I won't go back and forth on the topic. If anyone wants to debate it, post a new thread)

. Also, not enough money goes towards researching what methods can be used to prevent illness and life style measures that might offer protection against cancer are not widely reported. Very unfortunate

You are absolutely right. Cancer is big business, and you make much more money on treatments then cures, because treatments are on going. My daughter will be having her one year scan in 10 days. She is scanned every 3 months. Each scan costs me thousands. In the one year since her diagnosis, between scans, blood work, surgery, pathologies, etc. I have paid out of pocket the cost of a luxury car, and in 4 more years if she remains cancer free my out of pocket costs will be that of a house outside of the North East. And that is only if it DOESN'T come back.

When my DD was diagnosed I was told no money is allocated to the research of infant sarcoma. They have no catalog for Oncologist or Pathologist to use as a data base to go through and match the different types of tumors, so my DD was misdiagnosed. Had I not used my own resources, she would have had her cancer mistreated. Her cancer is so rare and so underfunded, they don't even have a name for it, beyond soft tissue sarcoma. The doctors told me, that no one would make money researching this type of cancer, so no one bothers. Imagine hearing that. Your child's cancer isn't worth the time because it won't make anyone money.

Now i don't think oncologists are sitting around twirling their mustaches, trying to keep cures from being found, it isn't really up to them how the money is allocated. For example the NCI only allocates 4% of their funding for cancer research to Pediatric cancer. 4%! And Pediatric cancer is on the rise. From that 4%, it is then broken down and dictated what cancers will be funded for research. Medical research is time consuming and expensive. If you keep it under funded, finding the cures, the new treatments, getting them past all the legislature is basically impossible. So any headway takes decades. All the while money is being made by the relentless, horrible treatments. It is depressing to think about.

First of all, hugs and prayers to you and your daughter. But what you are saying is SO important. I wish more people knew this. It is for this reason that pediatric cancer charities are virtually the only ones I give to. Charity is personal, but to me, nothing else is as worthwhile a use of $.

ETA: We do give some to other disease and cancer research, but St. Jude is where most of it goes for us.

My heart breaks for you but unless you are in it you really don't realize these stats and they are so sad. So what is the best way to help??? As an outsider you try to donate what you can but how can you really make a difference??

My prayers for your daughter and your family!!!

In my personal opinion, really know the place you're donating to. St. Jude is a fantastic organization, or when say the Lymphoma research calls asking for money, ask how much of your donation goes to research, or helping with medical costs of patients. Or find smaller causes, individual ones that are raising money for specific research, or gene therapy, etc. Or give to people with youcaring or gofundme accounts to help them with their medical costs. It sucks that you have to be so diligent to know where your money is going when you think you are helping. Many times it is lining the pockets of people who run the organizations. But basically find a cause you are passionate about, and do some research, find the best places or people to donate to and stick with them.

And thank you for your prayers Chat Icon

Wanted to add for children's causes Ronald McDonald House is also a really wonderful charity.
