Dear NYC Tourist

Welcome to New York. We are glad that you have chosen the Big Apple as your vacation destination and we hope that you enjoy your stay here.

Just a couple of quick reminders as you tour this great city:

1. They call it "rush hour" for a reason. Although you are here for a leisurely vacation, many of us commute to the city for work every day. Busy hubs of transportation such as Penn Station and Grand Central, are NOT tourist attractions. It is not in any of our best interests for you to block people who are trying to catch trains by walking at a leisurely pace, taking pictures and looking around at your surroundings. Keep the line moving. Especially on hot summer days like yesterday, when there is no ventilation in these stations, it is important that you keep moving as quickly as possible so that we can all get to where we are going quickly and out of the heat.

2. I understand you may be unfamiliar with your surroundings, but please try to avoid wandering aimlessly around looking for signs directing you to your train. If you see me with a jacket and tie on and a briefcase, it probably means I need to get somewhere. If you are lost, ask me or one of our trained information specialists. But please try to stay out of my way or I will be forced to move you myself.

3. NEVER hold open the subway doors. That can get you killed. Now is not the time to be asking if this train goes downtown, holding the doors open and preventing the train from leaving the station. They have these wonderful things called maps that you can use to see how to get where you need to be.

4. You do NOT need to stop every 5 feet to take a picture.

By remembering these simple reminders, we will all be alot better off.

Once again, enjoy your stay in NY and please feel free to ask one of our friendly New Yorkers if they can be of any assistance.

Sincerely:

Disgruntled Commuter

And can you please grasp the courtesy of standing to the right on escalators and stairs?? We drive on the right side of the road - can't you just keep to the right so I can pass on your left?!? Is it that difficult to comprehend that perhaps I would like to walk at a pace slightly faster than you - get out of the way! Chat Icon

5. When boarding public transportation, your voluminous shopping bags do not require their own seat(s). If you are that concerned about them hitting the floor or touching the overhead racks, spring for a cab.

When I first started commuting in the city, I apparently wasnt walking fast enough in the left "lane" of the subway escalator (and I tend to walk pretty fast) and some crazy woman literally punched me in the back and then pushed me all the way up the stairs! now that's extreme! Chat Icon

Re: Dear NYC Tourist

HAD to send this to DH - he is the epitome of a NYC commuter.

May I add....

Dear Commuter:

Please turn your ipod down when you are next to me. I have no desire to listen to your second-hand music. And stop popping your gum, goddammit!! You sound like a friggin' cow!!

Oh and that urgent cell phone call -- take it into the vestibule or else speak in a low voice. We don't all need to hear about your girlfriend's bad hair day!! Chat Icon

Good point! I often think that myself.. do I act like the typical annoying tourist when I am on vacation... ? I hope not Chat Icon I love to take pictures and espcially in Greece and Italy I was a picture hog. And I've done lots of "tours" so I might come across just as clueless as the NY tourists..

Though I still feel like the NYer in me is always "on" and I'm still always running around, even on vacation, when everyone else is dragging their azzes.. Chat Icon

Dear NYC tourist -

Since you have the whole day to be in our wonderful city is there any reason why you you must eat lunch/go shopping during the height of lunch hour? Please save lunch hour (eating and shopping) for the rest of who have to make every minute of it count.

Dear NYC Tourist,

If you do not get the hell out of my way, I will elbow you out of my way and into a puddle. Then, you can use that camera to take a picture of me laughing at you.

Re: Dear NYC Tourist

Ohh this is all so true. I specially have to deal with tourists because I work on 5th ave. I sometimes can not get out of my building because there are people taking pictures in front of the door. Once I get out of the door, I have to practically walk on the edge of the curve to avoid all of the tourists. Otherwise, it would take me a half hour to walk to the subway. On a tourist free season it takes me 5 minutes. Chat Icon
