I’m having a really hard time coming to terms of putting my kids in daycare. Quitting isn’t a option for me Chat Icon please tell me they will be ok?! Chat Icon I looked at my first center tonight and was so upset at the thought of doing this... but it meets my flexible schedule and is nearby my house

They will be fine!! There are so many wonderful child care centers out there, staffed by people who truly love the kids. I worked in a center when I was in college, and looking back, I would have absolutely trusted my children in that center. They were amazing. I know it is hard, but they will thrive and love it. The socialization with other kids will be great too. Where do you live? Maybe people have suggestions for you. I live in Nassau, but have friends in Suffolk who have used child care centers.

They will be fine. In fact, they will be better than fine. They will socialize, they will learn, they will have so much fun.

I think it is extremely beneficial to have children in an educational, structured environment.

it's going to be fine! I will be realistic though: the first couple of days will be hard with naps and whatnot, and they may not be able to get the boys on the schedule you'd prefer right away, but they will. They also might have runny noses and things like that a little more often, but they're just building up their immune systems.

And whenever a time comes that you want them to do something differently, it's SO much easier to talk to them about it vs. your parents. For example, DD's daycare was letting her nap as long as she wanted, but some days she was napping from 1230/1pm until like 330 or 345pm. She was giving me a hard time going to bed at night, but I had ONE conversation with them about it and now they wake her up at 3pm on the dot if she hasn't already woken up. She is also really great with sharing because she's around other kids, and she is so sociable with other kids at the pool and stuff this summer. I really think it's because of daycare.

It's all positive. Only negative is you're spending money, lol, but i only see positives with the whole daycare experience

Daycare was literally the best thing I ever did for my daughter and I would do it again in a heartbeat .
I can't even begin to list the benefits.
They even potty trained her.

Honestly, I feel that children who go to daycare are at such an advantage! I could never have given my children full-time play and academics like a place such as Tutor Time gives, for example. My nephew goes to the Melville one and he's just so bright and social...

DD went to daycare full time for the first 9 months and then my MIL offered to watch her 4 days a week. I honestly had so much guilt from pulling her out those 4 days because she learned so much and I loved that she got to socialize with other kids her age. They will be perfectly fine in daycare.

Everything here.

My children LOVE their daycare. DS graduated in June and has been back at least weekly to visit. He loved being there.

DD runs to her teacher every morning for a hug and barely waves goodbye to me.

Both of them have/are learning so much. DS is going into Kindergarten being able to read. DD was able to write her name before she turned 3. The socialization skills are not to be ignored, either.

Find a place you're comfortable with and don't feel guilty!

I'll just tell you this:

DS started daycare at 2. he is now almost 8. All he talks about is how much he misses daycare and how much fun he had. Every time we drive by, he wants to go back.

Thank you all so much for the reassurance! I think maybe I haven’t found the right center yet if I’m feeling so uneasy. I think my sons medical issue with asthma is the biggest issue I’m finding. I really want a nurse on site and I haven’t found that yet. I met with a director or one today and while she seemed knowledgeable, I didn’t feel comfortable. My one issue was I didn’t want my son out playing in the 90+ degree weather (almost kids were outside today) because it’s a known trigger for his asthma and even with the medical reason of not being able to be out, it was still “well I can’t do that with the ratios” so I think maybe a larger center that can accommodate more coverage would be best and maybe I’ll feel more comfortable.

They will be fine. This was the first center you saw. If you're not comfortable, you're not comfortable.

I have never seen a center with a nurse on site. That's not to say they don't exist, but the majority of them do not. Look for centers where the staff is certified to administer medication. A larger site may be better if you do not want him going out on hot days (also get a doctor's note so it's documented).

I was very lucky, my close friend is a licenser for the Office of Children and Family Services so she was able to recommend centers based on her observations. My son loved his daycare. It was in the house of a former teacher, everyone she hired was either a teacher or going to college to be a teacher. They wound up expanding into a center. They were amazing. You'll know when you find the right place.

Your children are going to love having other children to play with all day. I was home with my daughter and still put her into full time preschool at 2 because after a part time early 2’s program all she wanted was to “go to school”. She is thriving. I am returning to work in the fall and she will now do an extended day at the same nursery school.
I you feel uncomfortable with the center you toured then keep looking. I knew the minute I walked into my daughter’s school it was a good fit for us.
Remember, you can always switch daycares if it does seem to be a good fit down the road.

It will be fine. My son does great at daycare. I saw about 10 daycares before picking one and also called a bunch more. Find one you really like.

Re: Daycare

You’ll know when you’ve found the right place. My kids have all been in daycare since they were infants. I had plenty of days where I picked them up and they didn’t want to leave.

I doubt you’ll find one with a nurse on site. However, it’s important to have staff trained to administer medication. Asthma is common enough that at least some of the teachers should have experience dealing with it. If you provide a doctor’s note about certain accommodations with not going outside on extremely hot days, they should be able to work with you. My daughter has some medical issues and our daycare, which we’ve used for 9.5 years, has been accommodating even though they had never dealt with her particular issues before.

Good luck! It’s nerve wracking at the beginning and they will get sick more often, but things will get easier and they will thrive.

Re: Daycare

I actually think it's BETTER for kids to be in daycare. DD has been in daycare since she was 4 months old. She's so social and outgoing and shares well. She is whip smart and started walking and talking early. I take zero credit for this. I feel like everything she learned, she did at daycare.

ETA: Our daycare has a nurse onsite, but it's a huge place. It starts with daycare from 6 weeks on then goes to Pre-K, charter school, and has a high school on campus as well. This is located in Queens though so I doubt this will help you.

Agreed. My DD was playing with those bath letters a few weeks ago and starts telling us x is for xylophone, q is for queen and I’m over here Chat Icon
Then she starts telling me about metamorphosis and butterflies. I definitely didn’t teach her any of this.

Also side note, I tried to figure out a way to get DD into queens to go to the same daycare but it just didn’t work. They’re the best!

One day, at like under 3 years old, my DD was in the back seat of my car and starts talking about Whooping Cranes. I'm embarrassed to admit I had to google what a whooping crane looked like to see what the heck she was talking about!

I agree, it’s really good for them.
It’s been so great for our kids socially. They’ve made so many friends, love their teachers, learn so much, and have become more independent.
Even though we don’t have a choice because we work, daycare is definitely a worthwhile investment.
Keep looking until you find the right one for you.

Thanks everyone. I’m in Suffolk, port Jeff area. Maybe it was the center itself I didn’t like? I went because they have flexible scheduling which I NEED for my schedule, it’s a must. We went to Kids of Mt. Sinai. Tomorrow I’m looking at children of America but they may not have a spot for them :-/. I think maybe I just need more time to get used to the idea.

Did you try the Learning Experience in Mt. Sinai?

Also, did you look at the centers on the OCFS site to see if they have any violations? I vaguely remember it being posted someone that Children of America had some?

Also try Mill Pond, I see a lot of parents rave about that one. It's across from Norwood Elementary

My DD went to Grace Lane off 112 for Nursery school (3ish). I'm not sure if they take them younger, but we had a great experience there.

Thank you! I’ve been on the OCFS website and I am appalled by some of the violations I have found at certain centers and can’t even fathom why they can be open still. I’ll try mill pond! Thanks I live right there! I tried kids of mt Sinai I thought it was ok. Also tried Noah’s arc in port Jeff- they can’t do my sons inhaler. I need one with flexible hours where I can do some full some part

I used Tutor Time, and while they are all individually owned and operated, I was able do part time, change the days on the fly, jump between 2 days a week and 3 days a week depending on the week and my DH's schedule.
they were VERY flexible with us.

That's too funny!! It's expensive AF but when I asked around about daycare in Queens, every single person recommended them. I called a few other places and didn't like the vibe I got even over the phone... I didn't even visit a single other daycare.
