I have an almost 2 year old and I wouldn't do that with a banana. I do however open a bag of goldfish, or give him a squeeze pouch of baby food. Things that are scanable so I do pay for them.

I don't think it's a big deal if she offered to pay for it at the register. I've done it before. When DS was younger, he used to get excited to see a whole section of bananas and wanted to eat one. It kept him quiet and occupied the rest of the shopping trip. When I got to register, I told them he ate one and asked that they double charge me for one of my bananas. It didn't bother the cashier- she thought it was great that he had an interest in eating fruit over junkfood.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

Did it once
Got yelled at by cashier in front of everyone
Then I contacted the higher ups and got her in trouble

I'm sure she wished she kept her mouth shut after all the trouble I caused her.

Yup. You would have too, if she treated your niece or whatever the way she did and made her cry.

ps. Good job on always being such a peach! Chat Icon Chat Icon

I don't care what other people do, especially when it comes to a 2 year old. I'm sure she paid for the banana

to answer the OP, I don't care as long as someone pays for it, or pays double for it or whatever.

I even tell the people to scan it as much as they want to whatever price they feel the biggest banana would be.

I pay for everything and don't even mind being over-charged for a banana.

It's a banana. Some people need even the smallest things to complain over! It's like they are SEARCHING for any little thing to feel better about themselves and be high and mighty. Chat Icon

You know who is a big assshole? the kind of person who SHOULD be yelled at? short change artists, people who steal things by "accidently" not paying for items under their carts, and those who legit steal items and return them for store credit

not a mom who gives a kid a fruit and saves the peel to have it rung up later.

I do it at the time at Trader Joe's. Every time my kids see those bananas they MUST have one. Chat Icon

I let them have one each, keep the peels and have the casher charge me for 2 extra bananas. NO big deal!

I do the exact same thing with DS. Not once have I ever forgotten to pay for it because I keep the peel laying on top of the banana bag (I buy them every time we go).

and seriously - I bet my life that not a single Trader Joe employee will ever scold you for this. and that's how it should be, if you are paying for it.

plus, they charge by the banana, which I think is genius!

While I would never do it, nor sample the grapes before buying Chat Icon , I do see it often and I don't judge unless I know for a fact they aren't paying for it. If the store charged per banana (like TJ's, etc.), then let's give her the benefit of the doubt and assume she had them charge her for it. If it's done by the pound, then maybe she had them weigh the rest and put one back. Did you see her check out or just give her kid the banana?

I would also much rather get a few dirty looks for giving my child a banana (that I PAY for) than opening up some kind of processed junk just because it can be scanned. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it.

really had no idea until tonight that there were banana police out there, observing and watching to see if the banana peel makes its way to the registers Chat Icon

If she later paid for it, fine. If not, it's stealing.

Stealing. If I my child was hungry I'd either feed them a snack I brought or they can wait.

I have gone into the store and brought my OWN banana from home and gotten the dirtiest looks from people for giving it to DS. You can never win!

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

Like others have said, if it's by the pound and she didn't pay for it yet, that's a little nervy. But by the banana, no big deal.

I have gone into a store starving and grabbed a snapple and animal crackers and ate them while shopping - just rang up the empties at the register.

I try not to make a habit of that but if I'm starving, I'll buy the entire store!

If she didn't pay for it, it's stealing. Even if she did, I personally would never do that. And I have dealt with my toddler son demanding to eat whatever food before we check out. I personally would rather deal with his tantrum than let him eat unpaid for food. At three, he has learned that we wait till we get in the car to get the food he wants. I have chosen that because I want to clearly illustrate a point to my concrete thinking toddler- you pay first, then you get to have things.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

Just wanted to say- I don't know if she actually paid for the banana (I didn't follow her to the register or anything!). I just saw her give the kid a banana, and walk away from the bananas without an extra one to ring up or anything.
Eating in the store doesn't bother me at all, I've done it a couple of times (and like PP mentioned I save the empty container). This just seemed to be a slightly different situation because it didn't seem like she paid for it (once again, I could be wrong).

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I would never do that. If I was shopping with my kids and they were really hungry, the only thing that I would do is open up a bag of lets say pretzels or something but I would still bring it to the register to pay for it. I would never just pick up fruit and eat it...to me thats just wrong...there is no way to pay for it once its eaten. I wouldn't even do that if I was alone and without my kids...just wrong.
