Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

I just wanted to add that there was a similar situation when I worked in family court. A 12 year-old girl was raped by her brother. It was absolutely horrendous. No one was aware that she was pregnant until well into the pregnancy. As a result, abortion was no longer an option. I have not read all of the articles, but it is entirely feasible that the 10 year old and her parents did not know she was pregnant until it was too late for abortion to even be an option.

That is a very good point!

Not to make light, but look at Nicole Kidman.. you can hardly tell she is pregnant and is pretty far along. I am sure a 10 year old girl would not have any idea that she was having a baby because she most likely does not understand or know the symptoms.

ETA: That is a terrible story. I wonder if they should do pregnancy tests on young girls who are raped.

It also is possible that the 10 year-old did not tell anyone what happened. It's just one of the most terrible and awful stories.

I am pro-choice.
I do feel though that this is a child who went through a very trumatic event just being raped at 10 yrs. old and then becoming pregnant. I can not honestly say she should have had the baby. I think she will have a lot to deal with and her life has dramatically changed already. It will be hard to move past such an event let alone it happening at 10 yrs. old. She is not ready for a child and at this point will be suffering a lot from this experience.

im selective about pro life...

i do no think abortion should be used as birth control

however, in situations of rape, incest, or the health of the mother, i definitely think an abortion is necessary.

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

This is a situation that is so tough....in this case I would be for an abortion. And I consider myself pro life.

That may sound hypocritical but I believe we are ALL hypocrites to some degree when it comes to these issues. I believe in the sanctity of life and that the unborn need protection...because if WE can't protect them then who will?

However...if my 10 year old daughter were raped I would be devesated. I know what pregnancy does to your body..I know the emotional toll and physical toll it takes...at 10 years old how could she handle that??

I guess I'd be selectively pro life then. I don't agree with people who abort because they forgot birth control. I don't agree with having such little regard for life in many aspects..it sickens me. I hate reading about people using it as a form of birth control and especially stories on late term abortion...but we won't go there. I guess in the end there are life situations that are just so awful that it would warrant an abortion....this topic leaves me feeling more confused than anything but I am at peace knowing how I feel about human life.

that is a very tough situation, I truly dont know what I would do.

Maybe the parents should raise the child as their own? Make it clear from the beginning who the real mother is but the 10 yrs old parents should have a huge role in raising the child.

Tough call. But I don't think I would opt for an abortion and I don't think I wuold have the heart to give the baby up for adoption

I agree with you 100% on these issues. But in the end as pro-life as I am i'm also pro-choice...

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

I am pro choice. As traumatic as this situation is from beginning to end, I can speak from exeprience that nothing is scarier, more painful, and life changing than pregnancy and having a child - and I was 33. I can't imagine what this did to a 10 yr old - and what type of health the baby could be in.... An abortion would have been the most humane thing for everyone involved. How sad! Chat Icon

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

I guess I'm in the middle of pro-choice and pro-life. I myself could/would never abort a pregnancy, but I understand why some women have to and it's their choice. I absolutely don't agree with using it as a form of birthcontrol. But for women who have health issues or can't provide a good life for the baby and their families would disown them, I understand, but like I said, I could never do it. Now being a mom I REALLY could never imagine.

That being said, obviously I think this poor 10 year old girl should have had the choice to abort her pregnancy. Bad enough she had to go through the trauma of being raped, go through an emotional pregnancy and now has a constant reminder of her assailant. It's a hard, sad situation. Chat Icon

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

From what I know..any TRUE pro lifer would argue against an abortion, there are no circumstances that would allow for one, none at all. I have seen some fight against some horrific experiences.

Me- Im pro choice "for others" so I think its awful this girl was allowed to deliver a baby at 10 Chat Icon

As far as getting periods that early. Its in the Us an epidemic of puberty ages lowering. No where in the entire world does or has the puberty age ever lowered but here. Its due to the foods we manufacture and create and toxins we ingest and breathe that other countries do not.

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

What we don't know is if the girls parents knew she was pregnant and chose not to deal with it, or if they honestly didn't know she was. IF they did in fact know she was pregnant and chose to ignore it, they should be locked up for child abuse and neglect.

I don't know why anyone would even ask the child what she wanted to do about her pregnancy. A 10 year old doesn't have the capacity to make that decision, they don't really understand. I think an abortion would have been the best choice in this situation, maybe then the little girl could have gone on with her life. I am sure that she would have understood someday why her parents made that decision for her.

If it was too late to abort, than the baby should be given up for adoption. I can't imagine why the girls parents would want the constant reminder of their daughters rape around? Its not the baby's fault, but giving that baby a chance to be raised by another family who will not be constantly reminded of how he/she got there is the best thing IMO.

I would consider myself pro-life, but there are exceptions to every "rule". In this case If I were her parent I would want her to have an abortion. first, this is a product of rape, second, she is so young I would be worried about her safety.

From what I heard regarding this story, noone knew she was raped, it came out after they brought her to the ER for a horrible stomach ache. Once there, she delivered and no one knew before hand that she was pregnant.

Re: Controversial question... but I truly want to hear opinions

i am pro-choice and didn't read the article but i just thought i would give my input anyway...
i encountered a similar situation myself not 2 weeks ago. a 10 year old girl raped by her 32 year old cousin and pregnant. she never told anyone... her mother brought her to a clinic for an unrelated problem; the clinic apparantly ran some tests and then called the police.
the girl admitted to being raped numerous times, as were her 12 year old brother and 8 year old sister.
they lived with the cousin. pig. i hope he rots.
anyway, she was fairly far along in her pregnancy... i was thinking too far along to legally get an abortion anymore.
but it brought tears to my eyes sitting with her and her sister. such sweet girls. no one should have their innocence taken away like that - not just the rape, but having to give birth to a child at 10 years old. i can't even imagine. it's not just having the child - adoption or a relatives help is always an option. but actually having a 10 year old child go through a pregnancy and child birth is just insane to me. and i think for this girl, there won't be another choice.

i am pro choice. i do also believe in this situation, such as rape for such a young girl that an abortin is necessary. what the girl went through is traumatic enough, now she had to raise a child at such a young age. her parents should have made the decision on this.

A woman who is raped should not be forced to carry a baby that is not wanted. Yes it still is a life that would be lost but I think in most cases it is for the better for everyone if the woman can make her own choice.

I am pro-life as well and totally agree with this post. The only other time I would find abortion "acceptable" is if the mother's life is somehow at risk due to the pregnancy.
