DH is in restaurant managment. In FL, NY, and NC the same practices take place. In order for them to be cleared to work there, they have to be on the payroll...so they keep the same SSNs on file, as different people come to work, the numbers get recycled and paychecks get cut. So, they are paying taxes, just not to their number.
Also, tax ID numbers are a common practice. Many illegal Mexicans pay taxes with their tax ID numbers.
they're using other people's SSN's? isn't that identity theft?

its definitely fraud. You will see it mainly in mom and pop type places...DH works for a corporate place now, no illegals in his restaurant at all.
Much to his dismay, he has to hire 3 guys now to do the work that 1 illegal gets done.

many use fake ss numbers to do this.
the debate of illegal immigration is a ridiculous one that will NEVER die (unless we do like I said above and just refuse to care for them once they criminally enter our country)
Janet, I am sorry for your horror. if you knew me (or at least followed my posts), you would know immediately what I meant by that. what I said is the most "cost effective" option for the govt of california to deal with the "immigration problem".
I would LOVE to see some of the people on this board take up migrant farming once we kick all the "illegals" out. the fashion board would never be the same!

DH is going to get a kick out of this thread tonight thanks to you!
Give them a chance to pay taxes and they will. Unless you have actually seen a bus of migrant workers you have no idea how hard these people work and what their day entails.
I am for sure that after 16 hours in a hot field to then get on a hot bus they aren't running to the local hospital ER because they are bored. I am sure its last resort.

I have no problem whatsoever giving them legal status. and I understand the benefits that they provide. but them not paying taxes is a huge drain on a lot of state economies.

I used to do billing for doctors in the wine country of California who accepted MediCal. the injuries they sustained doing work without the hope of insurance or workers comp is so saddening.
but if there was an american picking those grapes (and the vineyards had to pay all the taxes and comp insurance) you'd be paying a HELL of a lot more for a bottle of Woodbridge...for that price I'd rather go French
truth be told, we want the BENEFITS of the lower cost illegal immigrants provide manufactures to hit our wallets, but we don't want to TAKE the hit TO our wallets when it comes to taking care of them.
we WANT without wanting to GIVE...and use the cover of immigration to shelter the ugliness of our hypocrisy and greed.

If they are using a fake or stolen SS #, most likely yes. BTW, I wasn't commenting on my feelings on illegal immigrants or whether what they do is acceptable or not. I was just answering the question asked.

It's a strain for both federal and state govt's. Someone may fill out a W4 but if they put a high enough number of exemptions, no $$ will be taken out and therefore they are not paying taxes but will in theory owe $$ at the end of the year. If they are using a fake SS# with a fake address, as many people do, the gov't has nowhere to go to collect this $$ owed. However they still qualify for and obtain the benefits offered to them as if they were paying taxes. Sadly there are many ways to cheat the system and it's not only "illegals" who do so.

All states are required to provide public school education to children of illegal aliens. Whether right or wrong, states don't have the option of excluding illegal aliens from their public schools.

I am not a supporter of illegal immigration purely b/c well, it's illegal...at the same time most of these people work their a$$es off doing jobs that many Americans won't do anymore b/c they think they're too good for them, ie. working at McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, maintenance, etc.

Nor do I think they should. Children in any situation should have to suffer because their parents decide to go about things the wrong way.
Has California said what is causing their need for $7B? I also heard on the news that MA will be asking for $$ from the Fed gov't as well. I think this is just the beginning.

The illegals working in restaurants are using a SSN (Not their own) -
I drive on Horseblock road in Farmingville on occasion - I don't think the guys are showing proof of citizenship or a SSN to get work for the day.

I loathe the term "illegals" because we are talking about human beings with dignity. The issue for me is that we need clear rules about immigration and citizenship--whatever they are. We need to know what the rules are, to whom they apply, and what the conequences are of breaking them. Straight-clear. As with all laws, these laws should be status blind, color blind, and apply to all.
As for the popcorn...I'm not sure what it says about any of us or this conversation. I like things that advance the discusson....

I know when i go to work i work with a lot of Aliens and i have to say they are one of the hard working people around,I think the bailout plan has bought out the worse in people and some good, we can agree to disagree on some things but i cant believe the arrogance on here. Yes there are some things that the aliens get away with but I'm sure there are 'ALOT' of things we get away with also.. Its 50/50, It should not be a race issue.Sorry i had to put my input in..Flame me if you want, But this is how i feel.

That's a really good point. How many of us here have worked at an off the books job? I am sure most have at least once. What about those in the restaurant industry. Do you really think they declare all their tips. I highly doubt it.

This is true in a variety of industries. I work for a commercial real estate developer and our building engineer (a.k.a handy man) did this initially which none of us knew about. He came from El Salvador and used the name and SS# of a family member who came over here legally but than went back to El Salvador. He basically took over his relatives identity. Than he met a woman and wanted to get married, start a family ,etc. He decided to go the legal route and apply for citizenship. During the process he had to tell our boss the whole situation and fortunately my boss was more than understanding b/c he truely is a genuinely nice guy and hard worker. My boss supported him and even gave him a character reference. The only thing that was strange was calling him by his real name after knowing him under his "fake" name for so long.

No. You're 100% right about that. I was just commenting on my personal distaste for the term, although it's widely used. You're right--terminology doesn't chnage the reality.
