Billing question - 2 copays for 1 office visit?
Does anyone work in a doctors office and know if they can bill this way:
I was supposed to go in and have a sono with my OB/GYN and he was supposed to take a sample. My doctor was out of town at a conference but I came in anyway to have the test done because it had to be done a specific day (it must be done between day x and day y so it couldn't be rescheduled).
I went in and had the sono done by a tech - then another doctor in the office came in and did the test and left.
I now have 2 separate copay bills. One copay for MY OB/GYN who I didn't see and one for the doctor who did the test.
Is that really considered 2 separate visits? I would think it would be one copay - and then they bill the insurance for the sono and the doctors work for taking the sample?

If I have a sonogram or other testing it's an additional $20 copay.

Even if you don't have an office visit? The test is done during the sonogram.

I agree, that doesn't seem right. Had you seen your regular doctor and had a sonogram, you wouldn't have been charged twice.
My eye doctor hit me with two copays, one for his visit and one for a specific test he ran. That didn't seem right, especially as it wasn't explained to me before hand. I think he's just running up charges. I'm changing doctors.
A few years ago I went to my old primary care doctor for a check up, paid her copay and was charged a second one for an ekg done by her nurse - also without warning. I switched doctors.
This pattern of pushing more co-pays is troubling. My cousin can't afford all the ones she's been hit with lately and as a result is not going in for the care she needs to get her healthy enough to go back to work. Last year I paid all of them for her just so she could/would go. I can't do that this year as I am paying for her COBRA.
It's frustrating.

even when i saw my reg doc...when he does a sono its a double co pay.
bc one is billed as a visit and the other as a procedure.

It all depends on your insurance plan. If you have copays for sonograms then yes you would have a double copay. If you do not have sonogram copays then you are only responsible for doctors copay
Even without techinically having an appointment with the doctor. As long as the doctor sees you he is entitled to bill out a visit

Yeah...a sono technician can't read the report...only a dr. can! It is annoying!

Well apparently they aren't supposed to but the way they billed it they said to pay it but they aren't supposed to bill it that way.

What insurance do you have?
It was Aetna at the that time (we have something different now).

Here's how it works at my office..If you come in for a sono and the doctor reads your results..then a visit and a sonogram get billed out. If you have a sono and someone calls you with the results..then just a sono is billed out. I have seen a few Aetna plans that do charge for sonograms so maybe check with the ins company..they might have changed that without you knowing. If you don't have a copay for sono's then something doesn't seem right to me

No doctor told me the results or called me with the results. I went to do the sono and was supposed to have a sample taken during the sono but since my usual OB/GYN was out of the office at a conference another doctor came in and did took the sample. I had the sono during it the other doctor came in took the sample and left. The nurse called me and told me that I have to go back in 2 months and do another sono. I never spoke with my regular OB/GYN. Actually the sono tech told me the results while she did the test.
Honestly I just paid it too much of a headache. I have very different insurance now so it won't matter in the future.

I have learned that you HAVE to be your
own Health Ins./Care Advocate. You need
to check your policy, call the Ins company.
If I was to get pregnant I would pay the
first $25 co-pay at 1st visit. No co-pays for
rest of the visits (as long as they are for
pregnancy..its called Global ).
In the past I had to call Ins company after
each visit I had for me or my kids and some-
thing was ALWAYS messed up.. ALWAYS..
is scary how huge Ins companies cant get
their sheet right and cost the patients!
Call your Ins!!! every policy is different.

with my old insurance i would have paid 1 for visit and 1 for lab/test. (if you find out how much the test that was done was less than your copay than i would have only paid that).
