I have my tickets already. Can't wait to see it. I don't know how much of it is fiction but I think it's mostly speculation. It makes you think, it's interesting, and entertaining.

I am going to see it but not because I think it is 'only' fiction, but because I think it could present an incredibly valid question of the history of Jesus and of early Christianity and of the Hebrew faith of the time of Jesus.
I read the book and loved it. I can't wait to see the movie.

Essentially, without having it spoil it, the theme is that the Holy Grail does not necessarily refer to the cup of Christ, but rather to the womb of the Royal bloodline of Christ. The speculation is that it was Mary Magdalene (sp?).
And furthermore, that it's not a male sitting next to Christ in the Last Supper, but really Mary Magdalene - the one w/the long red-hair.
Ok, its official.. i have no idea what any of this is that you are all referring to. Who is Mary Magdalene?? I only know of one Mary, the one who had Jesus.. and what is a Holy Grail? I guess its best I dont bring my son up catholic.. I really dont seem to know much...

i liked the book and i love seeing movies that i have read as books...i like seeing if my imagination is accurate
the da vinci code is intriguing and should be an interesting movie to see....hopefully they did not stray off of the books main plot as some movies do

In Catholic school we were taught that Mary Magdalene was a whore. She washed Jesus' feet and dried them with her hair.
The Danvinci code says she was more like Jesus's girlfriend.

It's funny because I watched this documentary that said that there was never any evidence that Mary Magdalene was ever a prostitute. I don't think it's even written in the bible. Supposedly, it's a myth that somehow developed over time.

Biblical scholars (prior to the Da Vinci Code ) debate the translation of the word for "prostitute" vs companion or wife.
Was Mary a Prostitute?
Nowhere in any scripture is Mary Magdalen referred to as a prostitute- this smear appears to have originated with fourth-century Pope Gregory of Nyssa, who confuses her with the prostitute Jesus saved from stoning in a New Testament account. As the Bible clearly implies that Mary was a woman of independent means, it is highly unlikey that Gregory didn't know exactly what he was doing when he ruined Mary's reputation for the next fifteen hundred years.
In fact, it is the persistent, innaccurate portrayal of Mary as a repentant sinner that does the most to undermine Mary's position. Even discounting gnostic texts that emphasize Mary's importance, the canonical gospels make it clear that Mary was an apostle, and an important one at that. Over the centuries, as the Christians who would become the "orthodox" phased out female leadership, her role was decreased from apostle and teacher to a silent, contemplative figure, the model of the 'ideal' Christian woman: silent, long-suffering, and modest.

When we studied the Eve/Mary stories at St. John's, it appeared that Mary was a wealthy widow (alleged) and that she was a major benefactor for the Ministry of Christ, and as a result she & Mary (the blessed mother) became close & were actually priests in the Ministry after the death/resurrection of Jesus. The male theologians & religious leaders at the time were not thrilled with female priests so they labelled her a whore in the later texts. Of course The Blessed Mother could not be blasphemed. but her role as the mother of Jesus was important enough to let the "priest thing" fall out of the texts.

There are quite a few theologian scholars that have very thorough texts on their findings. I will try to find them in the depths of my school work in some of the bibliographies I had.

Mary Magdalene was never a prostitute. In 1969, the Catholic church admitted they lied about it and made it up to benefit the church. However, they hid this information in the pages of a very long memo/manuscript, so the public still believes the lies.
The Da Vinci Code is supposed to make you want to discover the truth. If the Church admitted they lied about Mary Magdalene, what else have they lied about?
I do believe the church is upset about the movie/book because parts of it may be true. There is definitely more to the story.

But, I wouldn't boycott it. I read the book and I interpret it to be mostly fiction, but with some fascinating "what ifs"
