Re: Anyon NOT doing Cord Blood Banking?

I am not.... for A LOT of reasons too lengthy to get into. Basically banking it doesn't guarantee you can use it on your child, they haven't been "banking" cord blood long enough to determine the effects of the freezing process on teh quality of the stem cells etc and a bunch of other stuff.

Our baby will be receiving all of her cord blood as it is considered to be part of their blood supply and can contain up to 20% of their total blood volume. There are also studies that say the stem cells in the cord blood are crucual for babys immunity.

So our midwife will NOT cut the cord until it has stopped pulsing and the baby has received all her blood.

Yup, they will wait to cut the cord at home........ You can also request they do that in the hospital if you have a vaginal delivery. I'm pretty sure if you have a section this is not an option though.

Re: Anyon NOT doing Cord Blood Banking?

we didn't do private cord blood banking last time and won't do it this time, either. however, last time we donated the cord blood to the public bank and will do the same this time.

if my baby were to get sick with a disease that required a stem cell transplant, it would probably be genetic in nature, meaning that we wouldn't want to give the baby his OWN cells back (because they would also have the defect).

and basically all of the non-genetic diseases that might require a stem cell transplant can be treated just as easily with a bone marrow transplant from a family member donor or a public donor.

we also don't know whether freezing the stem cells and other processing affects their viability.

all in all, there is too much that is not yet known about the benefits of banking cord blood. imo, the banks have done a great marketing job and are feeding into every parent's desire to do everything and anything for their child... but there is actually very little evidence supporting the benefits of doing it.

I am delivering in a hospital with a midwife.

I was planning on doing the cord blood banking till I heard about cutting the cord once it's done pulsing...

My husband thinks we should just let it be and cut the cord once it's done pulsing...I'm just sacred if we ever need it, would I torture myself with regret?

Do some research on it.... I can't tell you if you will regret teh decision or not. To me, after all the research I did I can't justify banking cord blood. My baby is better off getting all the blood.

Re: Anyon NOT doing Cord Blood Banking?

I just wanted to put it out there - if you are on the fence because of the cost there are other companies out there besides viacord and cbr that are much less expensive. Viacord and CBR spend a lot of money on advertising and marketing. I am banking with a not-for-profit organization that is affiliated with the NJ public bank. We were going to donate to there but found out you can't donate with twins, so we went with their private bank instead. The price we got for two babies was close the the same amount the "big 3" charge for 1 baby. The yearly charge is about the same.

Re: Anyon NOT doing Cord Blood Banking?

There is an article on this in either the current or last week's Newsweek. Basically, there is not enough evidence yet to warrant it and the cases that the companies use as evidence seem to be the exception and not the norm. It is not yet recommended by top medical professionals and therefore i dont think we will be doing it
