Anybody get a degree online? also, any teachers out there?

I have a BA in english and have been seriously thinking of becoming a teacher. are online programs legit? meaning, are they taken seriously when applying for jobs?

How long does it take to get certified?

I would love to teach young children, maybe even preschool. Do I even need more education to do that? I've heard you don't need anything more than an english degree for very young ages Chat Icon maybe that varies on the state.

Any good resources that teachers can point to online? TIA!

Re: Anybody get a degree online? also, any teachers out there?

hey lady,

my sister was working in a nursery school for a while before she had her masters but she did have a bachelors in education. im pretty sure you don't need it for nursery school but you might need it for preschool

new york
grades 1-6 require at least a BA in any subject and then a masters in education or a BA in education and at least pursuing a masters in education. she also had to take like 5 exams. my SIL is a preschool teacher in the city and she has a bachelors in ed but no masters.

not sure what the NJ requirements are Chat Icon although my college roommate became a high school english teacher in north jersey right after college with a BA in Journalism, so that might be enough.

i don't know much about online programs but i'd love to know the answer to this too Chat Icon

If you are going into education check with your state ed dept.

NY is very particular when it comes to accepting online degrees for ed degrees. I currently am getting my post-grad in educational administration online through Canisius, which is accepted. I work online for the univ. of phoenix, and NY does not accept their educational admin program.

I have been looking into online colleges as well; How did you like Ashford's program? Difficult.. on the easier side? How long did you BA take?

Thanks!

I recently graduated from an online masters program. It was half online and once a week you went to a four hour class.

If it is accreditied it's legit. Employers will only care that you have an accredited degree - nothing else.

If it works for you....go for it!

Before you spend money on a degree program, I recommend you look into forecasts for job opportunities in your area. The birth rate appears to be declining... My uncle just told me they are closing 2 entire elementary schools upstate where he lives, and the remaining 1 will only be running at 80% capacity.

I know, it does make me nervous since my SIL is a teacher and got laid off a few years ago. I am in NJ though and I was doing some research yesterday and it seems like it's growing in demand but who really knows Chat Icon

i would just caution you..if you have your heart set on it, go for it

however, teaching across the country is high inundated with too many candidates right now-especially the humanities

i'm an english teacher..graduated with my master's in '09, and am entering into my 4th year of teaching-and am still vastly underpaid at a private school..on top of that they eliminated one of my classes for this year so i'm .83 instead of full time

and i was the ONLY person my graduating year who's managed to have a steady job the past 3 years

my cousin did her undergrad work in English and did her master's online, as others said as long as its accredited it should be ok, however I have to agree with the PP.... it was very hard for her to find a job so she ended up switching careers altogether. I believe now she is an admin asst.

I can't speak to the teacher's aspect of your questions. However about online degrees, I'm sure it depends on the industry but my answer is I believe they are taken less seriously - and in some cases, discounted.

Re: Anybody get a degree online? also, any teachers out there?

thank you for the responses! I am looking into it more and will give it some serious consideration but it is discouraging to hear about teachers having trouble. I'm sorry to those of you currently struggling Chat Icon

I have a job that pays ok but has seriously become unfulfilling. Hate that the commute takes away 2+ hrs away from my baby too.

Maybe I will just double my efforts in convincing my friends to start having babies and I'll run a home daycare Chat Icon

I think you can call their registrars office and ask. I dont remember how i found out that Ashford was. I think it was probably when i was researching which schools.

I graduated 2 years ago so im sure a lot has changed. I loved the set up. 5 weeks per class. Like i said i dont know if anything has changed but its unlikely that the class set up has...

My Major was Psychology and my Minor was Criminal Justice. I started in May of 2006 and graduated in April of 2010. I only had 15 credits to start from Queensboro. My friend also got her Masters from Ashford and she liked it a lot as well.

When I look at a resume, I often google the school if something jumps out at me (like a school in Iowa but the employee is employed during that time in NY) so yes, you can tell.

If you apply at a place that background checks, they call the registrar if you have an education check.

Re: Anybody get a degree online? also, any teachers out there?

I went to Touro College for my Masters and they have locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, LI, and online classes as well. I believe you can take all classes online now. So i think that taking classes online from a legitimate school would be better that graduating from a totally online school.

As PP have said, it is a tough field to get into, but worth it if that's what you really want to do. Good Luck!

BTW, I don't think you need a Masters degree to teach preschool...check into that...that would save you a lot of money and headaches!

Question: (sorry to Hijack)

But what difference does that make? I ask because I have NO COLLEGE DEGREE at all! I'm closing in on 40 and don't see myself wasting the money or effort to go to back and try again (i have credits with NCC but I'm sure they've gone cold by now).

The Industry I am in requires a BA at minimum for any and all positions. I have always gotten around it because I have nearly 16yrs of experience and professional designations.

If I were to get a degree, who CARES where its from as long as its accredited. In my case, I'll be lucky if I ever get a degree in my life time!

Why would an online degree be 'less' than a classroom degree? I have NEVER understood this. Why is a State college less than lets say Ivy League?

I think the perception is that online degrees are often done at the student's leisure. Testing is different than a classroom setting. How do you know that someone isn't sitting there with the book in their hand or looking up info online as they take the test?

As for a State college is considered less than an Ivy League school, they are absolutely considered "less". Are they as good of an education? I don't know. Some schools are more difficult to get into, require higher SATs, better grades, more well-rounded, community service. A better degree doesn't guarantee a job but it opens more doors. Depending on the industry (particularly finance) that matters. It doesn't mean someone is going to be a more valuable employee. I know a guy from Dartmouth that uses the word Dartmouth multiple times during conversations. He may have the degree but he's a pretentious snob.

Re: Anybody get a degree online? also, any teachers out there?

I am an adjunct professor at well recognized school that offers both on-line degrees and traditional in-person degrees. I taught both sides. In my opinion and experience, an individual learns more from a degree that was not acquired on-line.

In my full-time job, I have some decision making power regarding hires and promotions. When I see a degree taht was acquried on-line school I give it less weight than a degree that was aquired the traditional way. I explain my take to anyone else in the decision making area as well.

So yes, it does make a difference a differnece in my world.

This is so silly. Have you ever taken an online course?
The coursework and testing is typically set-up in a much different fashion compared to the way a typical college course is. In many ways they are more difficult. In a typical class the professor lectures, a handful of students participate, there is a paper or two to write or other homework assignment and some tests. In most online courses I have taken, there are multiple discussion questions weekly that you must participate in, a 5-10 page paper weekly and other various assignments. There are no multiple choice tests. I learned more and worked harder in my online courses because the requirements and structure were more intense. Yes you work at your own pace but you do not work less, if anything you typically work more.
As for the statement that a private school is worth more then a state school, did you ever think maybe the student couldn't afford or didn't want to shell out the cash for the more expensive school. You may find this link to newsday showing the college information on LI's valedictorian's and the colleges they are attending interesting. Quite a few are going to SUNY and CUNY schools. http://www.newsday.com/2012-long-island-valedictorians-map-1.3750424
