Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

They have a new kind in the One Step Ahead catalog is that not a backpack for the child, but a bracelet on the wrist on parent and one on child. It seems better to me somehow.

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

We don't have one but I would get one if we needed it. DS is perfectly content in his stroller...for now. If the backpack is the difference between keeping my child safe instead of possibly risking him getting hurt, lost, or worse, it's the right decision for us to use it.

Maybe she was hoping people would have grew up a bit since then and reply without the drama?

I'm pretty sure we are all "grown up" around here. At least I know I am.

Personally, I don't care what people think of it. But to come right out and say that you SAW the other thread, SAW the drama, SAW the responses, but now your posting a poll and hoping there is no drama...that just doesn't make sense to me.

ETS: and, if the op wanted to see the consensus, then she should just do a search and go back to that other thread.

Hasn't this been a huge drama post in the past?Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yeah it has been.... I'm just trying to get the consensus, so I'm hoping it doesn't take that route again.

So basically, you've seen this posted before. You saw the drama, but you figured you would post it again.

I don't get it.Chat Icon

Maybe she was hoping people would have grew up a bit since then and reply without the drama?

I know my own opinion has changed since that last post as well b/c I had a NB then and a toddler now.

I am so glad you mentioned that your opinion changed bc mine did as well (well not from the last thread) but since Ive had a toddler. I can TOTALLY understand why someone would want one. Do i like the way they look...not really. BUT as long as you are keeping your child safe, then whose to judge.

I was one of those people that said I would never put my child on a leash, but I didn't have one at the time..Chat Icon I used it last year a couple of times, she was 18 months and all over the place, I used it when we went to zoo, petting farm, ren faire, etc.. I liked the monkey back pack... This summer we didn't use it once, I guess a year she know not to try and run away from us or else she won't get anything...

not a huge fan of them but since having my DD can understand using them in crowded places for safety reasons.

HOWEVER, if i saw a person walking his/her child just down the street with one, i think that would be a bit strangeChat Icon

Its interesting because I know people who won't think twice about restraing their child in a stroller with no freedom, but are totally judgemental about the use of a harness.

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

I hate them and find them very different from a stroller. I put my daughter in a stroller so that she doesn't get tired of walking and so that when I'm in the mall I can put my bags on the stroller and still have my hands free for anything I may need.

To me a leash is a harness and I don't see a need for it. That's just my opinion.

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

What does it matter what the consensus is?

If you want to use it, use it.

If you don't, don't.

Pretty simple IMO.

And I never said never but I definitely understand the use for them better now - - and DD isn't even walking yet!

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

To me it provides safety while allowing your child to feel independent.

I've had my DD run away from me in the mall. She'd squeeze through a group of people and make her way around the corner before I got to her. Try chasing a 2 year old while you are pregnant or carrying a newborn.

Its nothing like having a dog in a leash. I don't drag her anywhere. She still walks next to me and holds my hand. But if she tries to run away she isn't getting far.

but like I said the concensus changed.

I felt differently on that last post cause I didnt have a toddler. Im sure Im not the only one.

Well If your grown up and think we all are, then there wont be any drama...so all the points you have made are solved and explained?

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

Didn't answer the poll, because honestly, this is one of those things I really don't feel that strongly about either way. If I think I need one, I'll get one, if not, I won't. DS isn't walking yet, but his safety will always trump what other people think or say about it.

As I have said before, since becoming a mom, my mantra has become "never say never....." Chat Icon

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

I have always been for them...I don't have one though, he is a pretty good listener and really doesn't runaway.

I would love to put one on the little boy I watch, completely different personality...

I see no difference in strapping them to my arm or strapping them into a stroller.

Not understanding what your saying.

But, I won't get into it with you because you will just make it like I am starting drama when, in fact, I am not. I simply don't understand the point of needing a "consensus." If you don't want to use one, fine. If you do then fine.

Thanks for posting this! It just reminded me that I should get one for Disney in case we need it!

I think "harness" is a better word than "leash" Especially since my toddler doesn't lift her leg and pee on trees Chat Icon Chat Icon

\\\well u never know!!!Chat Icon

I actually use a leash with littl paw prints on it, nahh jk...who cares what others do, do what best for you and dont critisize...its not like the harness is abusive....

I wanted to see what the consensus was out of sheer curiosity. That's it... end of story!

At this point, I don't believe that I will use one. I am in the same mentality as Trish. If DD does not want to go in the stroller, then we aren't going, or we are leaving where we are.

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

I dont have kids at the moment but I will probably get one when needed... my mom used one with me the first time she went on vacation only with me, she usually say that mom+child+baggage+unknown airport is equal to a bad combination and is better safe and sorry

I feel the same way!!!

I saw them for one for the 1st time when I went to Disney while I was pregnant with DS and thought it was a great idea. The little boy was about 2 and had a monkey back pack and the tail attached to his mother's wrist. In a crowded place like Disney I think it is a great idea. That way he can't run off and at the same time noone can take him.

Re: a poll... do you like those backpack/leashy things?

Well I don't have a need for one just yet, but I've never been against them. I feel that you can't judge until you're in the situation and based on my DD's personality so far, there is a good chance it may be necessary in the future.

I've posted this story before but, DH and I had this talk when I was pregnant and we were on a cruise. This one little girl had one and he looked at it in horror until he noticed this little girl constanty trying to get away. Chat Icon She tried running into the pool (fully clothed), up the stairs when her family was leaving the ship - didn't matter where her family was going, this child wanted to go somewhere else!

If she didn't have a leash and people saw her running around by herself, I'm pretty sure people would have judged that family for not controlling/monitoring their child. You just can't win.

I used one for DS when he was younger -- probably around 16 months or so. He was too young to listen, but a quick runner and I felt much safer having him tethered to me. I don't think I will need it much now, he listens pretty well.

I honestly don't understand the drama that surrounds them -- I think they are a great safety device, especially in crowds.

I bought one but my son got out of it the moment I put it on, so I never used it.

I wish I could have though. I don't see anything wrong with it.
