Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I know there have been posts about eating in supermarkets and whatnot. I just witnessed something this morning at Stop & Shop and was wondering what other people's take on it was.

A mom was shopping with her son (he was probably around 2) and was in the produce section.

She then asked him, "Do you want a banana?" When he said yes, she picked up a banana right off the shelf to give to him. Obviously, she can't pay for it since the bananas are sold by weight.

I know its just ONE banana and probably shouldn't be a huge deal (and he was just a baby), its probably costing the supermarket a quarter for that banana. But if everyone just picked up bananas and ate them, wouldn't it just raise the prices? I couldn't help to be slightly annoyed by it. The kid was screaming out in hunger. He didn't ask for the banana.

I know its silly, its just a banana. Just wondering what everyone else's views were.

Was she using the self scanner at stop and shop? If she was she could have weighed it, got a price for it and scanned the barcode. Then I wolud have no issue with her giving her son the banana.

Nope- she just had picked up the banana, unpeeled it and gave it to him.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

I have an almost 2 year old and I wouldn't do that with a banana. I do however open a bag of goldfish, or give him a squeeze pouch of baby food. Things that are scanable so I do pay for them.

Then she is stealing unless at check out she has them weigh a banana 2 times to make up or the eaten one, but this is unlikely

Yeah it's kind of tacky IMO.

I was behind a dad in Target last night who had a teen that must've eaten a bag of candy.

They dad scanned the empty bag.

I think it's fine to give your child food that you can scan and pay for at checkout. I don't think you should just pick up random produce - that's stealing.

I'm pretty sure at Trader Joe's the bananas are just a certain price PER banana.

Not acceptable. I'm not a fan of people eating in supermarkets. You & your kid can wait until they get out of the supermarket.

And if either of you have a medical condition where you need to eat, pay for your food & eat it outside so there is no mistaking your intentions.

It's stealing & it puts an awkward burden on the teenage supermarket employees that see you stealing.

ITA with all of this.

What the woman did with the banana was 100% wrong IMO.

I do it at the time at Trader Joe's. Every time my kids see those bananas they MUST have one. Chat Icon

I let them have one each, keep the peels and have the casher charge me for 2 extra bananas. NO big deal!

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

She def should have weighed it, printed out a sticker for it and then given to cashier to scan when leaving.

ETA: as for the eating/drinking in store issue, that topic has gotten beaten to death on here and has always caused drama... I personally have done it and paid for it at the checkout, always... I don't see anything wrong with it and if someone wants to give me dirty looks, then all well and good Chat Icon

I used to do this when my DD was a toddler. I would save the peel and bring it up to the cashier (and he/she would either weigh the peel or an extra banana). I was NOT stealing, and to suggest otherwise is ridiculous. I paid for the item before I left the store.

I would just give the chick the benefit of the doubt and figure she informed the cashier and they weighed an extra banana.

If I even noticed, anyway. Usually if there is a whining child near me in a store, I toodle the hell away.

Re: Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

Picking an apple, taking it to the deli guy to wash it and eating it as we go through the store is the norm for us. We ALWAYS pick a second apple for the cashier to ring up and leave it with her after we check out. IMO there is nothing wrong with giving your kid a banana as long as you bring an extra one to the register to pay for it. Otherwise it's stealing.

Funny enough, the cashier is always surprised when I tell them to keep the apple since he already ate one. Always with some comment about how nice it is and how no one ever does that.

Hmmm.... I've never gotten a ripe, ready to eat banana from the supermarket. I always have to wait a day or two. I'm jealous.

Curious to see what everyone's thoughts are on this-

If she took it, ate it, and didn't pay for it, that's wrong.

As far as eating in a supermarket, I don't and wouldn't but to each his/her own. I don't care if anyone else does. But, I went shopping with my boss/co-worker one time @ S&S with the scanner. She grabbed a large bottle of Naked Juice and started drinking it. I scanned it and it was $4.99. She freaked out because she thought it was cheaper so she unscanned it, CHUGGED it and hid the bottle on a shelf. When I saw what she was doing a scurried away. I was absolutely mortified. This is a 40+ year old professional too.
