background on weightloss surgery
Nov 21 2009 11:28AM

a couple of people have asked me document my life post bypass surgery.

it took me a few days to decide to actually do this.

i guess i'll start with a little background. i've had weight issues my adult life. i toyed with the idea of surgery after i tried almost every diet known to man.

once i made the decision to get the surgery, i found that the best dr/drs, for me, were the drs at Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeons. i worked with Dr Vincent Iannaci. the best decision.

the dr's office is located in florham park, nj. the office is wonderful. everyone from the front desk, to the nurses are polite, thoughtful, and helpful. i will take a moment to talk about the only negative i experienced: the person in their billing dept is not the most people-friendly person i know. she made and error in billing my initial appointment. she was not the most helpful person in dealing with it... but it was taken care of.

the closest hospital to me where dr iannici operates is St Peter's University Hospital. they, too, provided the best. once i was out of surgery, every nurse and aid provided the type of care anyone would want. when i called for them, they came quickly and were always happy to provide the care i needed. everything from turning off the lights, to helping me to the restroom.

now, as far as cost. i have Amerihealth. they covered the surgery. they requirements were:
* letter of need from my primary care physician
* bloodwork
* psych evaluation
* nutrition evaluation
* endoscopy
i paid my regular co-pays for most of these. i was informed that the insurance companies are slow to pay the psych evaluation. so i was asked to pay upfront and once the insurance pays, i will get reimbursed. then, i found out that the amerihealth would not cover the nutrition evaluation. they REQUIRE it as part of the process to cover the surgery, but they don't cover it. that cost me $125. finally, i have a hospital stay deductible. it's $500/night up to $2000. i was in the hospital two nights. i'm expecting a $1000 bill from St Peter's University Hospital. i've already saved the money for that.

i think i've covered the background. if i missed anything, i'll come back and add it.
