Super Poem Sunday

It's that time of year again, for the annual Super Poem Sunday, co-sponsored this year by the Bards Initiative and the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site.

The annual Super Bowl Alternative for Poets (which still ends in enough time for you to catch the actual Super Bowl if you want!) will be as usual a poetry slam! (Note: you do not need to memorize your poems to compete.)

Every participant will get 3 minutes to perform a poem.

$100 prize to the winning poet. 2nd and 3rd place prizes will also be awarded.

$10 entry fee, food will be provided.

LADIES - this is your chance to learn to protect and defend yourself against this violent crime - for FREE!

For over 25 years, we've been giving women effective strategies, tactics and techniques in this community service class and we've trained thousands of people how to protect themselves; now it's your turn!

This hands on class will teach you how to block a strike by an attacker, what to do if you get grabbed, held, or pulled, and more... We'll enable you to fight back and get away in the worst of situations!

In addition, you'll learn how to recognize suspicious behavior, how to act, and what to do once you realize the person you're with has plans that don't include your consent. You'll also learn how sexually motivated attackers think, What they look for when they are "hunting", What makes them continue an attack? and most importantly - what makes them stop!

EVERY woman NEEDS this training!

Description:
Camp is not just for the summer anymore! Parents now have a safe and affordable option for their children when school is closed for holiday breaks. Holiday Camps utilize Rolling River’s spacious, private facility to provide children with a variety of supervised indoor and outdoor programs. Holiday campers participate in fun activities such as arts and crafts, computers, Nintendo Wii games, cooking, playgrounds, gymnastics, yoga, relay races, off campus trips and more. Holiday camps are open to both Rolling River families and non-enrolled families. Rolling River is conveniently located 1 mile south of Sunrise Highway on Ocean Avenue and is 1 block from the LIRR East Rockaway train station. Free train parking is available for those parents who commute on the LIRR.

Celebrate an all-American Presidents’ week! Step back in time and follow a Native tradition of fashioning dolls using cornhusks. Wherever corn was grown as a crop, children in both Native American and Colonial American families used husks to fashion dolls. With a knowledgeable interpreter, hand craft your own cornhusk figure—either boy or girl! Learn the legend of the cornhusk figure. Why did it not have a face?

Children of all ages will enjoy a performance of Irish dancing by teachers and students from the Mulvihill-Lynch Studio of Irish Dance, known regionally, nationally and internationally as champions on the competitive circuit. The award-winning dancers will also interact with the children—answering questions and teaching some Irish dance steps. Find out if Irish dance is in your future. Hear the fascinating history about the costumes and dances. After the show, participants may wish to have their face painted by Miss Sue or take a guided tour of the Walt Whitman Birthplace.

Hofstra University 17th Annual Irish Festival

Hofstra University presents the 17th Annual Irish Festival on Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Mack Sports Complex, Arena, located on the University’s North Campus.

The Irish Festival celebrates the Irish gifts of music, food and culture to America. There will be a number of music and dance performances throughout the day, as well activities for children, more than 50 craft vendors and authentic Irish food.

Admission to the 17th Annual Irish Festival is $6 and $5 for senior citizens (65 and older). Children under 12 are free. Members of the Hofstra community also receive one free admission upon presentation of a current HofstraCard.
