While I “do” tend to be EXTREMELY particular, I would not likely be classified, at least by most, as a high maintenance woman. In fact, I could probably spend a bit more time taking better care of myself. Still when we met another couple for a celebratory dinner at a jazz and supper club only to see the two sporting jeans, t-shirts and cowboy boots, I was “mortified”.

And, this seems to be quite common as I’ve witnessed, especially in recent years, people taking “casual but neat” to a whole new level. From pajama pants in public and sweat pants worn to the theatre and fine dining establishments, it seems that style is “out of style”.

But, with the holiday season upon us, experts are offering a caveat about dressing for holiday party success. And they make the following suggestions and recommendations.

1. The Office Event: Think sexy, subtle sophistication al la Jackie O and Coco Channel. Remember, you’re best bet is the understated but elegant little black, dress. Classic styles in deep greens, reds and burgundy and other deep opulent seasonal hues also get the stamp of approval.

2. Stepping Out On the Town In Style: Think bold and bedazzling colours and styles. Here sequins, form-fitting pieces and audacious accessories are A-OK; so are plunging necklines and bare arms and backs.

3. Cocktail Party Couture: Sleek and sexy is what’s called for here. Think “office party ENHANCED. Consider staple pieces such as a simple pencil skirt paired with a festive boustier or a strapless number with moderate beading and/or sequins.

4. The Black Tie Bash: Think long and flowing. These events call for full-out gowns and glam, making it truly and affair to remember.

5. Casual Gatherings: These relaxed reveries are no reason to let your style guard down. In fact, you should step it up a notch above a typical visit, since it “tis the season”. Think dress slacks, even “dressy” jeans with a shimmery top or velvet jacket and a nice pair of flats or heels.
