Having a bright, white smile is an age-old tradition that dates back to antiquity. In fact, the Egyptians used a potion of ashes, eggshells and myrrh to lighten their smile.

Today, we “polish” our pearly whites about 200 billion times a year.

But, do you know exactly what’s “in” your veneer varnish? You probably didn’t guess a warning label. Guess again. It’s actually quite common for your favorite toothpaste to read: “Warning: Keep out of the reach of children 6 years of age.

Additionally, experts advise seeking professional help or contacting a poison control center immediately should you swallow more than used during bushing. They strongly suggest teaching your kids proper bushing techniques which include brushing thoroughly and spitting, not swallowing. The problem lies in the fluoride. Furthermore, many toothpastes contain generous amounts of dyes, saccharin, sodium lauryl/laureth, and anti-plaque agents. Some even feature derivatives of triclosan, a toothpaste anti-bacterial agent that may be noxious. Additionally, potassium nitrate, found in a variety of products may exacerbate gastrointestinal problems or be transformed into a carcinogen when swallowed.

According to health officials, its best to purchase toothpastes with all natural ingredients that have no preservatives, artificial sweeteners or dyes. Instead, they may utilize finely ground chalk or peelu, vegetable fiber, as a gentle “scrubbing” agent and tooth whitener. Natural essences such as peppermint, spearmint and/or wintergreen oils give and added cool, fresh feeling and sweet breath sans artificial contaminants. Natural pastes clean, whiten and kill plaque do everything conventional toothpastes do (and more) but in a much healthier and tasty way.
