Your blessed new addition (to the family) may leave mom feeling far from her “old” self….and even quite sore. But, that’s OK, and quite natural. Recovery time is necessary and different for everyone.

Placing ice packs on the perineal area during the first 12 hours after vaginal delivery may help alleviate the swelling and the pain; while the malaise of C-sections may be addressed with medicines such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen without hampering or compromising your ability to breast fee.
Other pain-reduction techniques include:

· Seat Cushion: Usually a donut-shaped rubber ring that you can use as rear support. Generally available at the hospital, this ring makes sitting more comfortable. Experts remind new moms to lie on their side whenever possible and to refrain (as much as possible) from excessive exertion, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing, especially during the first few days after childbirth.
· Take A Warm Sitz Bath: Consider sitting in a tub or bowl of warm water. Warm compresses are a viable alternative to relieving perennial pain. You may also think about investing in some soothing pads soaked in witch hazel to alleviate any pain or discomfort. Soak the pads and store in the fridge.
· Consult Your Physician and Ask About Medication: Besides the discomfort, pain can contribute to your inability to adequately take care of yourself, your new baby and your new responsibilities. If over the counter forms are not sufficient, talk to your doctor about the potential need for prescription medication.
