Tonka beans / What’s for dinner?

Lidl had them on sale this week (I think they were leftover from Xmas when they have their gourmet foods for cheap), so I bought 6 of them. I’ve been very curious because I see them a lot on Masterchef The Professionals UK.

Never tasted them, though. I hear they are like vanilla, but nutty and cherry tasting as well. Chat Icon. I want to make ice cream since I make my own ice cream anyway, but what else can I do with them? Any recipes?

And what’s for dinner because I don’t think a lot of people know about tonka beans?

I made Korean breakfast eggs. I reheated some left over white rice from Chinese takeaway and then fried an egg (runny yolk, yum) and put that on the rice with a teaspoon of sesame oil, soy sauce, and melted butter with chopped green onions. I highly recommend this for a meal. Takes 5 mins and sooooo good!

Never heard of them so I googled and I found this....not sure how true though...

Selling tonka beans to eat has been illegal in the US since 1954. ... Tonka beans contain unusually high levels of the chemical coumarin, which gives them their flavour and is found naturally in hundreds of plants, including grass, lavender and cherries.Jun 20, 2017

Tonka beans / What’s for dinner?

The FDA banned Tonka beans:

The answer is simple, at least to the Food and Drug Administration: Tonka beans are harmful to your health. According to the FDA, tonka beans contain a chemical known as coumarin. When consumed in excess, coumarin can cause serious liver problems. As a result, back in the 1950s, the FDA banned any ingredient containing the chemical from consumption in the U.S. With that, chefs were forced to eliminate the tonka bean from their dishes.

However, The Atlantic suggests that the FDA's ban on coumarin could be outdated, given that it would take eating about 30 whole beans for those coumarin levels to become seriously dangerous. Since one bean provides enough flavor for 80 dishes, it's highly unlikely that anyone casually consuming tonka beans would encounter any medical issue. Still, the FDA has remained strict on its ban, so much so that the administration even raided Alinea, a Chicago restaurant, in 2006 after rumors struck that tonka beans were used in its menu.

I honestly don’t know how you cook for people like this. I have no patience for picky people. My mom is so picky. She will not eat vegetables in general and meat in foreign countries, except for schnitzel. She won’t eat fish except for canned tuna. It’s always an argument when she visits me. I just give her pesto and pasta or some sort of pasta dish.

I’m bad. I just start sneaking things in food as long as there aren’t allergies. I have no idea where I came from because I will try anything. Then again I studied culinary arts, so that might have something to do with it.

I had no idea about Cheddarwurst. I think it’s Käsekrainer here (translation cheese sausage). It’s Austrian, I think. I don’t know enough about the millions of sausage here and usually just stick to the basics. SO loves Käsekrainer.

Ditalini is the tiny little tube pasta, it's great in soups.

The beer bread is SO good and really easy to make. I like to make it with a nice red ale, I usually use Smithwick's, but you can use any beer that you like.

Preheat oven to 375°F

Combine 3 cups all purpose flour, 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 3 tsp baking powder and 1 tsp kosher salt. Sift.

Add 1 bottle of beer and stir to combine.

Place into a greased loaf pan, pour 1/2 stick melted unsalted butter over the top and bake for 45-55 min depending on pan size. Bread should be nice and golden brown.

Enjoy! Chat Icon

They love it in my house which is odd as they give me a hard time with regular sausage. I can’t make this shit up lol.

Hmm the bread sounds good that I might make as I have only made the Pampered Chef one.

I actually just got a bread maker as my 5 year gift at work and want to try that out soon too.
