I took care of my uncle but he passed a month ago, so this is no longer a concern, although frankly, I never really thought about it in depth because something happening to me was just not an option, and also unlikely. I didn't have him living in my house though, because I already have my dad living in my house and I had no space.
However, if the parent involved has no money of their own you should get them on Medicaid, and in the event of a tragedy, their living and medical expenses would be covered by that.

They need to be on both medicare and Medicare to help you out. If they can qualify for SS or other benefits I would apply for them as well.

Even if they live with you, apply for Medicaid. You get a lot of help that way.
My FIL is in a nursing home because he cannot live on his own and I refuse to let him live in my home. FIL pissed away all his money so he is dependent on Medicaid to pay for it. Any income of his goes to the home.
DH is fine with my Dad moving in with us when the need arises, but if something happens to me, I have a sister that would have to step in.

I think it depends on the relationship you or your spouse have with the person living with you or him, in the event you or your husband should die. If the relationship it good then some people might continue. If it is too burdensome then some people would place the disabled person in a home.

My mother took care of my fathers parents until the day they died. My father passed away when I was very young and even though my grandparents never lived with us, she made sure they were always involved in my life. As they got older, my mother was their primary caregiver and made all the decisions in the end. They had another son who was just never involved. But honestly I think it really depends on the relationship you have with the family member.
