Re: Leasing a car

Now i'm wondering about my lease downpayment bc it's significantly less than anything I see in this thread. I find the entire car buying/leasing experience stressful and always wonder if we were somehow screwed. We leased a 2016 Odyssey (middle trim level) and we only paid $400 at signing and it included new plates. We then got a check from the dealer about 10 days later crediting us bc our fee was overestimated. Our payment is $385 for 3 years. We're in FL so I don't know if that makes the big difference.
Florida leases have sales tax based on your payment so there wouldnt be any tax for you to pay upfront

I don't lease so don't have skin in the game, I prefer buying (just bought a new car with 100% cash down and spent weeks contacting different dealerships for pricing/availability) but I dont trust dealerships in general because you always get scammed in 1 way or the other (front end or back end).
I found the boards over at Edmunds to be helpful with leasing. One of the things they discuss a lot is MF/residual #s. If you go to the site and plug in the specific make/model of the car - there are posts from people all over the country sharing what their lease deals are. I really don't believe any "no $ down" deal because in the end, you do pay something, whether its tax/title/fees or shortchanging you on a trade-in, etc. Of course, different dealerships offer various incentives/new car programs, so thats why you should shop all dealers before committing to 1 specific place.

Money factors and residual values are set by the manufacturer and change monthly. Those are the biggest factors in your monthly payment (Besides price, obviously). They aren't generally disclosed to the customer either because trying to explain it to the average person is like trying to teach greek to a 3 year old. It took me years to really understand how it all works.

Re: Leasing a car
We paid about the same for DH's lease... all these "fees" and taxes added up. I also wonder if we got swindled. I hate buying/leasing cars because I always feel like we are getting taken. ugh.
