custom-made mattress
my husband's grandfather made a cradle for him when he was a baby that we want to use, but the mattress in there is at least 21 years old (because his cousin used the cradle but no one remembers if they got a new mattress).
unfortunately, the sizing is just slightly off for cradle and/or bassinet mattresses (everything is just slightly too big or too small). i found a couple places online that will custom make mattresses, including one that uses naturepedic mattresses.
did anyone have to get a custom-made mattress? if so, what company did you use?

Re: custom-made mattress
I would just go with the mattress that is a little to small. The baby won't be moving anywhere in the cradle and to make you feel better u could always roll a blanket in the gap.

Is that safe? I was thinking I could get a mattress that was the best size and then get foam in the same thickness and affix it to the mattress to make it fit, and once it is covered by a waterproof pad/sheet, it wouldn't make a difference, but I was also concerned that there could be a possible safety issue. Though I guess that even if I had a very early roller, by the time he would be rolling he'd be out of the cradle and in his crib.

You could go to Joann's and get a custom cut piece of super thick foam (they have various sizes there), then cover it. Super easy!
