Food pouches - What am I missing here?

Why do all of the food pouches now have fruit mix with veggies? This wasn't the case when DD was a baby 6yrs ago. Doesn't it make a baby expect something sweet with every single meal? I thought you give veggies first and fruit after so they get used to the taste of the veggies and fruit is like dessert. Am I crazy and totally overthinking this? Chat Icon

ETA: are there any particular brands that don't do this?

Food pouches - What am I missing here?

I buy veggies pouches from beechnut. Some are just veggies. Other have veggies and fruits. I make sure that if there is a fruit, it is the last thing listed.

They have the different stages pouches by Gerber. Stage 1 or "assisted sitter" is just single fruits/veggies. I started DD out with veggies- peas, carrots, squash, etc. and then we just moved onto fruits- apples, mangoes, bananas. I did this for the same reason, so she could get used to the vegetable taste before getting the good stuff. I also think it's important to give single fruits/veggies first to test for allergies.

These are the ones I get:

Then it goes onto these:

ETA: Gerber also has them in little containers:

Re: Food pouches - What am I missing here?

I'm confused by the pouches though. Do you squeeze them out into a bowl?

Or does the baby just suck them out of the pouch?

I feel like depending on the age of the baby, they would need to fed off a spoon no?

I can't see a baby who is just starting veggies or fruits knowing how to eat out of a pouch.

I always looked at the pouches as for older babies/toddlers and the jars/containers for the younger babies- and those come in single veges.

Oh yea they definitely need it from a spoon at first. This is for an 11 month old so he needs a little help but does it himself for the most part.

Found some Sprout stage 3s on amazon that were just meats and veggies. He eats some table food but not really meat so much.

Yeah- into a bowl or onto a spoon. Though the little demon she is would probably suck it right out of the pouch if I let her. Chat Icon

Just a PSA- make sure you check each pouch for mold before you feed it. My DD's daycare teacher said she finds mold in 50% of them.

I gave DD Beechnut organics jars- they def have plain veggies.

Seriously?! Gross. How do you check for it if it's inside the pouch?

Food pouches - What am I missing here?

My daughter got very sick after eating one of those pouches. I will never buy them. Much rather go with puree that needs to be eaten with a spoon.

You have to cut it open.

Food pouches - What am I missing here?

I noticed while in the grocery store on Saturday that some brands are now starting to make the pouches clear. Probably due to the mold concern.

Ew! I never knew that about mold! That was all that they had in the stage 1s when I went shopping. The last time I got the little plastic containers.

So I'd heard about the mold and I didn't buy them to begin with but I asked the teacher what other parents send because I couldn't find a lot of flavors with the beechnut organics and she was like "No pouches!" And then told me that she finds mold in at least half and she refuses to feed them to the kids straight from the pouch. She looked disgusted.

I've actually never seen a pouch laying around there recently so I have a feeling she talked the pouch parents into jars! She said the beechnut organics is the best and added "I see a LOT of baby food!"

My understanding that are pouches are a supplementary type snack for older kids- meaning kids not just starting to eat. Do you squeeze the pouches out and feed with it spoon? If so, why not just buy jars?

The jars are becoming extinct. Very few companies make them anymore.

This. Which is why I am shocked about the mold. As for it being a supplement, I think they used to be but now they have full meals (stage 3s with meat) so they are replacing the jars.

Really? So babies too small to use a pouch do what? I've never bought baby food, but I don't see how pouches are a replacement for jars.

It's the same food, just different packaging. I guess you'd squeeze it out into a bowl?

Stage 1 pouches are all usually single flavors. Plum & Gerber are usually the only ones I saw pouches consistently. Earth's best usually have the stage 1's in jars. I usually ordered both through Amazon on subscribe and save...much more variety than what was in the stores.

I buy them for DS who is 16 months old. He's a picky eater with veggies so this is the only way I can ensure he's getting veggies. I know the kale and broccoli is masked by the pears or whatever so he will eat it. I never had a mold issue but I have also never looked either. Gross!
